  • The purposes of this study were to analyze the long-term trends for the outlook for job development in the forestry sector and to identify supply and demand on job markets. Due to the results of the studies of the forest area would be focused on area of forest therapy and guide, forest biomass research, researcher on prevention & control of forest pests, technician for forest protection, expert in forest disaster prevention, investigating of overseas tree species, and similarly the qualification items should be given more in trees and or bio-energy producer, forest saver and preventer, forest therapist and guide, tree pesticide doctor, forestry job regulator, etc. The main implication of the study result is that the reason of climate changes, environment pollutions and green-energy productivity would push the conditions of job market trend in forest workforce area.

  • In this study, forest-related research papers published in North Korean journals were analyzed to understand the research trends in North Korean forest science. The Korea Science and Technology Information Institute (KISTI) North Korea Science and Technology Network (NKtech) is constructing a database related to science and technology in North Korea. From this, a total of 1,389 articles published from 1962 to 2016 were collected with forest science key words based on the South Korean National Science and Technology Standard Classification System. The topics were divided into four categories: afforestation, forest protection, forest use, and forest management. In the field of afforestation, research activities on nursery and agroforestry were active, and the survival rate was emphasized. In the forest protection field, there was a significant research effort into forest pests, and efforts were being made to reduce soil erosion through agroforestry. In the field of forest use, research activities on pulp/paper and mushrooms were active. In the forest management field, activities related to "ecological information" were conspicuous, and efforts were being made to reduce carbon. These results suggest that the perspective of North Korean forest research has changed from nature reorganization to nature protection. Thus, a comparative study on forest science and technology in each sub-sector of the forest research field, along with analysis of the relationship between policy direction and research direction of North Korea over time, would be worthwhile future investigations. To overcome the problem of technical terminology, a compilation/dictionary of inter-Korean forestry terminology would be useful for effective communication between the two Koreas.

  • Nowadays, the utilization infrastructure of domestic satellite information is expanding rapidly. Especially, the development of agriculture and forestry satellite is expected to drastically change the utilization of satellite information in the forest sector. The launch of the satellite is expected in 2023. Therefore, NIFoS and academic experts in forest sectors have prepared "Special Issue on Forest Management Research using Optical Sensors and Remote Sensing Technologies" in order to understand new remote sensing technologies and suggest the future direction of forest research and decision-making. This special issue is focused on a variety of fields in forest remote sensing research, including forest resources survey, forest disaster detection, and forest ecosystem monitoring. The new research topics for remote sensing technologies in forest sector focuses on three points: development of new indicators and information for accurate detection of forest conditions and changes, the use of new information sources such as UAV and new satellites, and techniques for improving accuracy through the use of artificial intelligence techniques.

  • The purpose of this study was to draw policy implications for the development and expansion of Korea's forest ODA through investigating the perceptions of stakeholder on the fields that contributed the development of forestry in Korea and would have competitiveness in developing countries and priority fields for Korea's forest ODA. For this, the survey was conducted for 248 subjects from the general and expert stakeholder groups. Chi-square test in cross analysis, independent sample t-test, ANOVA and Duncan test were conducted to compare the difference of perceptions by group. The whole general and expert groups consider that 'forest conservation and rehabilitation' contributed to the development of Korea's forestry most and consider its global competitiveness most high. Comparing expert groups, ODA experts evaluated the competitiveness of 'capacity building for policies, institutions and research' higher than the forestry experts. For priority fields of Korea's forest ODA, general groups perceived 'management of CERs' and 'conservation of biodiversity' most important, showing the clear difference in perception compared to that of experts. In Conclusion, for the effective forest ODA of Korea, the effort to fill the gap between the general and expert groups needs to be made, as well as developing forestry capacity building programs to cope with the fields such as climate change adaptation and biodiversity conservation, which is newly required in a global society, in addition to using the past experience of forest rehabilitation in Korea. It will be useful for the rehabilitation of North Korea's forest in the future.

  • The Compact Advanced Satellite 500-4 (CAS500-4) is under development to efficiently manage and monitor forests in Korea and is scheduled to launch in 2025. The National Institute of Forest Science is developing 36 types of forestry applications to utilize the CAS500-4 efficiently. The products derived using the remote sensing method require validation with ground reference data, and the quality monitoring results for the products must be continuously reported. Due to it being the first time developing the national forestry satellite, there is no official calibration and validation site for forestry products in Korea. Accordingly, the author designed a calibration and validation site for the forestry products following international standards. In addition, to install calibration and validation sites nationwide, the authors selected appropriate sensors and evaluated the applicability of the sensors. As a result, the difference between the ground observation data and the Sentinel-2 image was observed to be within ±5%, confirming that the sensor could be used for nationwide expansion.
