In this study, we examined the effects of Rubus crataegifolius leaf on the inhibition of differentiation and adipogenesis of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes to confirm their potential for use as an anti-obesity functional material. Rubus crataegifolius leaves water extracted using hot water were then concentrated for use, with an extract yield of 4.76%. The result of measuring the rate of 3T3-L1 cell survival of Rubus crataegifolius leaf extract (RCLE) showed growth inhibition of 13% at a concentration of 1,000 ㎍/mL. Thus, in this study, experiments were performed using RCLE treatment concentrations up to 500 ㎍/mL. Production of triglycedie in 3T3-L1 cells showed a dose-dependent decrease, and the rate of reduction was 28.7, 40.8, and 51.6% at concentrations of 100, 300, and 500 ㎍/mL, respectively, compared to the control group. In addition, the results confirmed that suppression of lipogenesis was achieved by suppressing the expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPAR γ), CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein α (C/EBP α), sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1c (SREBP-1c), fatty acid synthase (FAS), acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC), and increasing the expression of p-activated protein kinase (p-AMPK). Based on these results, it is believed that Rubus crataegifolius leaf extract can be used in the effort to manage obesity by regulating factors related to adipocyte differentiation and adipogenesis.

Physicochemical properties of Rubus coreanus Miquel were examined. Unripened fruit, ripened fruit and leaf of Rubus coreanus Miquel were used as samples. The contents of water, crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber, dietary fiber, and crude ash were studied. The pH, soluble solid content, acidity and color were also measured. In terms of free sugar composition, concentration of glucose and fructose found in unripened fruit had increased in ripened fruit and sucrose was contained in ripened fruit. The major free sugars of leaf were glucose, fructose and sucrose. Citric acid, succinic acid and fumaric acid were found in all three sample groups, unripened fruit, ripened fruit and leaf. The citric acid showed the highest concentration in the unripened fruit as the concentration of 1.21%. Fifteen types of amino acids were analysed from the unripened and ripened fruit of Rubus coreanus Miquel. The leaf contained methionine in addition to those fifteen type amino acids in fruits. The glutamic acid contents of unripened fruit, ripened fruit and leaf were 411, 246.59 and 898.42 mg%, respectively. Among the minerals studied in this research Rubus coreanus Miquel held high level of potassium. The potassium concentrations of unripened fruit, ripened fruit and leaf were 645.07, 216.53 and 815.78 mg%, respectively.
In the growth of the Rubus coreanus Miquel fruits, the unripened (10 days) and ripened (25 days) fruits after flowering were harvested. The chemical characteristics of different maturational stages of the unripened and ripened fruits were investigated. Total amount of phenolic compounds was 4.00-7.56% in the unripened fruits and 3.78-5.57% in the ripened fruits, respectively. Furthermore, total amounts of organic acids such as malic, citric, succinic, and oxalic acids were 16.40 mg/100 g in the unripened fruits and 28.82 mg/100 g in the ripened fruits, respectively. In organic acids of the unripened and the ripened fruits, citric acid (8.76-15.47 mg/100 g) was the highest amount among other organic acids. Soluble sugars were significantly increased from 11.07 to 21.54% in the unripened and ripened fruits. Therefore, ripened fruits had the high levels of phenolic compounds, organic acids and soluble sugars. For the biological studies of R. coreanus, methanol extracts of R. coreanus leaves, fruits, and stems were evaluated for their insecticidal activities against Myzus persicae (Hemiptera: Aphididae), Plutella xylostella (Lepioptera: Plutellidae) and Spodoptera litura (Lepioptera: Noctuidae) by leaf dipping method. From these results, the extract of R. coreanus leaves revealed potent insecticidal activity against P. xylostella. However, the methanol extracts of R. coreanus fruits and stems had no any insecticidal activity against M. persicae, P. xylostella and S. litura. The R. coreanus leaves have promising potential as new insecticidal agent against P. xylostella.

The occurrence of gray mold on Rubus crataegifolius has recently been reported in Pohang, Gyeongbuk province, Korea. The initial symptom was the appearance of small brown spots on the leaves, and these lesions became later covered with a gray fungus as the disease progressed. A fungus was isolated from symptomatic leaves and incubated. Through morphological and phylogenetic analyses, the causal agent of the disease was identified to be Botrytis cinerea. The fungal isolate was then used to inoculate on the leaves of healthy plants to determine its pathogenicity as the causal agent of gray mold as per Koch's postulates. The inoculated leaves showed the same symptoms as the originally infected plant, and the fungal pathogen re-isolated from the lesions showed the same morphological characteristics as the original pathogen. This is the first report on the occurrence of gray mold on R. crataegifolius caused by B. cinerea in Korea.
We conducted taxonomical investigations based on morphological characteristics, fruit morphology, and literature research on the tribe Potentilleae (Rosaceae) in Korea covering seven genera and 24 species. The style position on the ovary and the shape of style were useful characteristics for the classification of subtribal and generic levels in the tribe Potentilleae. The subtribe Fragariinae is characterized by subbasal or lateral style on the ovary and anthers with one theca. The subtribe Potentillinae has a subterminal style on the ovary, except for Argentina, which presents a subterminal and lateral style and anthers with two thecae. These results support the recent taxonomic recognition that i) the tribe Potentilleae consists of two subtribes, and ii) genera such as Dasiphora, Comarum, and Sibbaldianthe sometimes included in Potentilla s.l. are treated as independent genus. In the subtribe Potentillinae, Argentina, which has been treated as Potentilla, is supported as a distinct genus according to the characteristics of the subterminal and lateral style position and the ventral stipular auricles. In Fragaria, F. nipponica subsp. chejuensis, which has generally small leaves and a limited distribution only on Hallasan Mt., is supported by treatment as an endemic species. Duchesnea chrysantha is distinguished from D. indica by the characteristics of light green or yellowish green leaves, thin and somewhat membranous leaflets, and broad ovate or obovate leaflets. Each complex of P. dickinsii and P. chinensis remains unresolved with regard to controversy over the taxonomic circumscription due to their external morphological variations. Additional taxonomical research and molecular population studies are required for a more in-depth understanding of the tribe Potentilleae in Korea.

Non-destructive estimation of leaf area is a more efficient and convenient method than leaf excision. Thus, several models predicting leaf area have been developed for various horticultural crops. However, there are limited studies on estimating the leaf area of strawberry plants. In this study, we predicted the leaf areas via nonlinear regression analysis using the leaf lengths and widths of three-compound leaves in five domestic strawberry cultivars ('Arihyang', 'Jukhyang', 'Keumsil', 'Maehyang', and 'Seollhyang'). The coefficient of determination (R2) between the actual and estimated leaf areas varied from 0.923 to 0.973. The R2 value varied for each cultivar; thus, leaf area estimation models must be developed for each cultivar. The leaf areas of the three cultivars 'Jukhyang', 'Seolhyang', and 'Maehyang' could be non-destructively predicted using the model developed in this study, as they had R2 values over 0.96. The cultivars 'Arihyang' and 'Geumsil' had slightly low R2 values, 0.938 and 0.923, respectively. The leaf area estimation model for each cultivar was coded in Python and is provided in this manuscript. The estimation models developed in this study could be used extensively in other strawberry-related studies.
Rubus nishimuranus Koidz. (Rosaceae), a species previously unrecorded for the Korean flora, was collected in the lowlands near a beach on Jeju Island. This species was known to be distributed only in Japan. R. nishimuranus differs from R. trifidus Thunb. ex Murray, by having leaves 3-foliate or sometimes the upper leaflets connate below and from R. hirustus Thunb. by having leaves ternate and the leaflets sessile or nearly so. The somatic chromosome number was 2n = 2x = 14 and the size of chromosomes ranged $1.2-2.5{\mu}m$. The chromosome complement of this species consisted of three pairs of metacentrics (chromosomes 1, 2 and 5), submetacentrics (chromosomes 3, 6 and 7) and a pair of subtelocentrics (chromosome 4).
Rubus palmatus Thunb. var. palmatus (Rosaceae) was first discovered in Anmyeon-do and Geoje-do, Korea, and the new Korean name 'Gin-yip-dan-pung-ttal-gi' was given. This taxon can be distinguished from var. coptophyllus by having 3-lobed or rarely undivided leaves. We, for the first time, report the distribution of R. palmatus var. coptophyllus (A. Gray) Kuntze from the island of Geoje-do in Korea and clarified the Korean vernacular name of 'Dan-pung-ttal-gi.' Finally, we designated the lectotype of R. palmatus using C. P. Thunberg's specimen (UPS-THUNB. 12282).

In this study, we investigated the melanogenesis inhibitory effects of Rubus crataefifolius Leaf Extract (RCLE) in B16F10 melanoma cells. We examined the effects of RCLE on the melanin contents and tyrosinase activity, as well as the protein expression levels of the melanogenic enzymes TRP-1, TRP-2, and MITF in α-MSH -stimulated B16F10 melanoma cells. RCLE effectively inhibited tyrosinase activity and melanogenesis, suppressed the phosphorylation of PKA and CREB, and expression of MIT involved in the melanogenesis pathway, and down-regulated expression of melanogenesis related proteins. These result suggest that RCLE inhibited α-MSH-stimulated melanin synthesis by suppressing MITF expression. Therefore, our study suggests that RCLE has potential as a safe treatment for excessive pigmentation or as a natural ingredient in cosmetics.

This study was performed to investigate the effect of natural plant extracts on acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity and the free radical scavenging activity. The methanolic extracts of plants were tested for AChE inhibitory activity using Ellman's colorimetric method in 96-welled microplates and antioxidant activity as the scavenging effect of 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl radical (DPPH). The results showed that AChE activities were inhibited (about 20-30%) in whole plant extract of Daucus carota var. sativa, Hypericum erectum and Fragaria yezoensis. AChE activities were inhibited (about 32-34%) in stems extract of Gingko biloba and leaves extract of Rhododendrondron yedoensa var. poukhanense. Fruit extract of Zanthoxylum schinifolium inhibited (about 18%) AChE activity. And the DPPH scavenging effects as antioxidant activity were similar to L-ascorbic acid in whole plant extract of Fragaria yezoensis and fruits extract of Comus officinalis.
