  • A development of one-dimensional thermal analysis tool is performed to estimate the thickness of cork insulation for flight vehicle. In the calculation of cork temperature, the cork density model, heat of ablation and pyrolysis gas enthalpy model were applied. The calculation for the two-layer model of cork and metal was performed by the tool and compared with the experimental data. The results for the two aerodynamic heating conditions were 17 % and -12 % different from the experimental data, respectively. The effect of mechanical ablation not included in the calculation can be expected as the cause of the difference. The temperature-density curve of cork which adjusted by experimental data was also presented.

  • Jet vane is an useful component which is installed at the end of a nozzle for the purpose of the posture control and the secure controlling stability during the initial launching of a rocket. Small space for installation and rapid response are considered as its merits but it is ablated thermally and mechanically by the combusted gas having high velocity and temperature produced in a combustion chamber. En this study, as the fundamental study for the ablation analysis of jet vane, the heat transfer into a jet vane which is located in the supersonic flow field.

  • The thermal response characteristics of nozzle liner for a solid rocket motor applying highly aluminized PCP or HTPB propellant with slotted tube grain have been investigated. The SEM photographs of aluminum oxide particles taken from nozzle liner show that the PCP propellant with the finer and less contents of oxidizer can offer greater possibility for increasing aluminum agglomeration than the HTPB propellant. The PCP propellant shows locally greater mechanical erosion at 4 circumferential areas of the nozzle entrance in line with grain slot due to the impingement of large particles, but the HTPB propellant shows greater thermochemical ablation at the nozzle blast tube, the throat insert and the exit cone because of relatively much more mole fraction of $H_2O\;and\;CO_2$ in combustion gases.

  • The thermal response of carbon/phenolic used in a solid rocket nozzle liner was analyzed. In this paper, the numerical analysis of the thermal response of carbon/phenolic consists of (1) the integration equation of the boundary layer to obtain the convective heat transfer coefficient of the combustion gas on the rocket nozzle wall and (2) 1-D finite difference method for heat conduction of carbon/phenolic to calculate the ablation, char, and temperature. The calculated result was compared with the result of a blast-tube-type test motor. It is found that the calculated result shows good agreement with the thermal response of the test motor, except at the vicinity of the throat insert.

  • Heat resistance performance evaluation and thermal analysis were performed to confirm the applicability of the lyocell-based carbon/phenolic composite material for heat-resistant parts for aerospace. Heat resistance performance evaluation of carbon/phenolic was conducted by Thermal Protection Evaluation Motor (TPEM). In this paper, boundary layer integration code considering the boundary layer analysis of combustion gas and MSC-Marc 2018 considering ablation and thermal pyrolysis were used for the thermal analysis. The ablation and thermal insulation performance were analyzed by the pressure curve of test motor and the cut carbon/phenolic specimens. The thermal response of the lyocell-based carbon/phenolic material was similar to that of the rayon-based carbon/phenolic material. Based on the results through the combustion test, the applicability of heat-resistant parts for aerospace to which domestic lyocell-based carbon fibers were applied was confirmed.

  • The main objective of this research effort was to develope the performance of C/SiC composites manufactured by LSI (Liquid Silicon Infiltration) method for solid and liquid rocket propulsion system and ensure the performance analysis technique. The various carbon preform were manufactured by filament winding, tape rolling, involute layup and stack molding process. For the best performance of thermal and mechanical properties, many process conditions were tested and selected by varying preform, the content of SiC, temperature, impregnation resin and chemical vapour reaction. In conclusion, the high performance and reliability of C/SiC composite were proved for solid and liquid rocket propulsion system. And the performance analysis technique related to mathematical ablation model was originated.

  • U-Pb zircon age for the Hongjesa granite, in the northeast Yeongnam massif, was determined using LA-ICP-MS. We obtained upper intercept age of $2013^{+30}/_{-24}(2{\sigma})$ Ma, indicating Paleoproterozoic granitic magmatism together with the Buncheon and Pyeonghae granite gneisses of the region.

  • Experimental results of $30^{\circ}-15^{\circ}$ nozzles were compared with numerically calculated convective heat transfer coefficients using FLUENT, Boundary Layer Integration Method and Bartz predictions. Also, the convective heat transfer coefficients were calculated by using FLUENT and boundary layer integration method for NASA HIPPO nozzles according to the characteristics of combustion gas and the correlation between pressure and pressure was compared. Finally, thermal analysis of NASA HIPPO nozzle was performed to compare the ablation thickness and char depth according to the combustion gas characteristics.

  • The development of metal plasma generated by high laser irradiance and its effect on the surrounding air using shadowgraph images after laser pulse termination are studied; hence the formation of laser supported detonation and combustion processes has been investigated. The core of the paper is in detecting chemical reaction using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) between ablated aluminum plasma and oxygen from air by inducing high power laser pulse (>1000 mJ/pulse) and conduct a quantitative comparison of chemically reactive laser initiated waves with the classical detonation of exploding aluminum (dust) cloud in air. This study may suggest a new approach of initiating detonation from metal sample in its bulk form without the need of mixing nano-particles with oxygen for initiation.
