Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the related factors of clinical practice satisfaction and social support in dental hygiene students. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 420 dental hygiene students in Gwangju and Jeonnam from March 8 to April 8, 2014. Except 26 incomplete answers, 394 data were analyzed. The instrument consisted of general characteristics of the subjects(7 questions), social support(7 questions), and satisfaction level with clinical practice(22 questions). The instrument for satisfaction level with clinical practice included self-esteem(1 question), interest and usefulness(2 questions), knowledge application(1 question), place of clinical practice(1 question), and influence by practice leader(1 question). Cronbach alpha was 0.773 in the study. The instrument of social support was adapted from Park and reconstructed. Social support included emotional support(11 questions), self-esteem support(7 questions), and informative support(4 questions). Social support was score by Likert 5 scale and higher score showed the higher social support. Results: The dental hygiene students got a mean of $3.11{\pm}0.55$ in clinical practice satisfaction. They got 3.35 points in satisfaction with major and 3.32 in satisfaction with curricula(p<0.001). They got a mean of $3.68{\pm}0.55$ in social support. They got $3.69{\pm}0.57$ in emotional support; $3.81{\pm}0.59$ in self-esteem support; and $3.53{\pm}0.66$ in informative support. The influencing variables on satisfaction with clinical practice were self-esteem support(B=0.202), satisfaction with major(B=0.234), and satisfaction with curricula (B=0.128). Conclusions: There was a close relationship between satisfaction with clinical practice and social support. In order to enhance the satisfaction with clinical practice, it is necessary to connect self-esteem support with major satisfaction and curricula satisfaction.
Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the voluntary activity, sociality, and morality in the dental hygiene students. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 563 dental hygiene students in Jeonbuk from May 20 to June 20, 2013. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the subjects, volunteer activity, sociality, and morality. The instrument of sociality was adapted from Kim and reconstructed. Sociality was scored by Likert 5 scale and consisted of autonomy(4 questions), assiduousness(4 questions), sociability(4 questions), stability(4 questions), and leadership(4 questions). Cronbach alpha was 0.655 in the study. Morality instrument was adapted from Kim and Cho and reconstructed. The instrument was score by Likert 5 scale. Morality consisted of altruistic(8 questions) and social responsibility(8 questions). Cronbach alpha was 0.786 in the study. Data were analyzed using SPSS 12.0 program for descriptive analysis, frequency analysis, and t-test. P value was set at p>0.05. Results: Among the dental hygiene students, 50.4% participated in the volunteer activity. 22% of the students tended to help others. There was a significant difference between the volunteer activity, sociality, and morality. Conclusions: The volunteer activity experience and sociality had a positive effect on the participation in helping others. Sharing with help is the most important attitude toward the positive thinking and the right way of living. So the professors and students must try to share knowledge and volunteering mind in clinical practice for the patients.
Objectives: This study investigated the relationship between demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the Korean elderly and their unmet dental care needs, by using the 2015 data from the $6^{th}$ Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Methods: In total, 1,372 elderly persons aged 65 and over, who responded to the $6^{th}$ NHANES, were included in the final analysis. Logistic regression analysis was performed in order to identify any relationship between demographic and socioeconomic characteristics and unmet dental care needs. Results: The rate of unmet dental care needs was shown to be less by 0.799 times in the elderly who reside in dong than those who live in eup and myeon (OR: 0.799, 95% CI: 0.679-0.959). Unmet dental care needs were higher in participants with 'low' and 'below average' than 'above average' income, by 1.645 times (OR: 1.645, 95% CI: 1.087-2.366) and 1.172 times (OR: 1.172, 95% CI: 1.108-1.880), respectively. Elderly individuals living alone had a higher rate of unmet dental care needs than those living with their family by 1.157 times (OR: 1.157, 95% CI: 1.084-1.498). Conclusions: Demographic and socioeconomic factors influenced unmet dental care needs, causing inequality. Proper policy support to the vulnerable should be considered in order to enhance the elderly's access to dental care.
Objectives: This study aims to contribute to devising systems for family caregivers of dementia patients by examining the state of oral care of dementia patients, and depression and social support among family caregivers of dementia patients. Methods: Family caregivers of dementia patients in the metropolitan area were selected in this study. The inclusion criteria were individuals who have provided care for a dementia patient at home for at least six months and those who come in contact (including phone calls) with the patient at least twice a week. Results: Oral health knowledge of the elderly, caregiving burden, depression, and social support were examined. The mean scores for oral health knowledge of the elderly and caregiving burden were $57.11{\pm}16.94$ out of 100 and $17.33{\pm}8.61$ out of 48, respectively. Further, the mean caregiving behavior score, depression score, and social support score were $8.49{\pm}13.71$ out of 100, $5.11{\pm}3.05$ out of 10, and $72.75{\pm}17.03$ out of 100, respectively. Factors affecting oral health knowledge of the elderly were examined. The results showed that the level of oral health knowledge of the elderly increased with an increasing perception of a need for oral health education (p<0.05), caregiving burden (p<0.01), and social support (p<0.01). Conclusions: These findings suggest that developing and popularizing oral care intervention programs for family caregivers of dementia patients are necessary to ensure systematic oral care for dementia patients.
Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the relationship between socioeconomic factors and the unmet dental care needs of the living alone and living with family elderly groups to confirm the differences in their influence. Methods: Data from the Korea Health Panel Study of 2016 were used to analyze a total of 4,987 individuals: 4,008 in living with family group and 979 in living alone group. Chi-square test and multiple logistic regression analyses were performed using SPSS Version 22 (p<0.05). Results: We observed that 16.5% and 28.3% of the participants from the living with family and living alone groups had unmet dental care needs, respectively, indicating that the living alone group had more unmet dental care needs. Income level, residential area, and healthcare security were significant factors related to the living with family group. In contrast, medical aid for healthcare security was a significant factor related to the living alone group (p<0.05). Conclusions: The results confirmed that socioeconomic factors that affect unmet dental care vary according to the living situation. Therefore, the government should identify the number of elderly individuals living alone, which is increasing annually. These individuals are vulnerable in almost all aspects, and the government should establish and implement appropriate oral healthcare policies to support them.

Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the influencing factors of community scaling rate using community health survey data. Methods: The data were extracted from 2013 Community Health Survey, Ministry of education, Korea Dental Association, Statistics Korea, Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service, and Ministry of the Interior. The resource factors of independent variables were analysed by Geographical Information System(GIS) using Map Wizard for Excel 17.0. The data were analyzed by descriptive analysis, pearson correlation and multiple linear regression analysis(p<0.05). Results: Seocho-gu in Seoul had the highest annual scaling rate(55.5%) and Goheung-gun had the lowest rate(11%) showing 44.5 percent gap. The influencing factors of scaling included the number of dental hygienists(r=0.316), dentists(r=0.332), dental hospitals(r=0.470), high school graduation rate(r=0.757) and equivalence scales household income(r=0.764)(p<0.05). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that community scaling rate was closely associated with community education level and monthly income(p<0.05). Conclusions: Community scaling rate was closely related to the community education and income level. It is necessary to provide the equal distribution of the oral health service to the community society.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate distribution of periodontal status and treatment need between smokers and nonsmokers. Methods : Interview and measurement was completed by 82 smoker students and 59 nonsmoker students in Taegu Health College from April 1 to 31, 2001. The community periodontal index of treatment needs(CPITN) was analyzed by percentage. Results : In distribution of CPITN by age, almost all subjects had periodontal diseases except for aged 20~24 years nonsmokers(4%). Smoking 5 cigarettes per a day, up to 10, and above 10 increased 5.3%. 7.1%. and 9.5% in 4 score of CPITN, respectively. In years of smoking, smokers who had above 5 years(13.5%) were higher than below those(6.7%), 20% for smoker who take tooth brushing once per a day had higher than 8.3%(or three in depth of pocket above 6mm. In treatment need, all subjects should take education(or oral health except for aged 20~24 years nonsmokers(4%), 96% of smokers and nonsmokers were need scaling. Conclusion : This study indicated that treatment needs for periodontal diseases and scaling in smoker were higher than nonsmoker those.
Objectives : This study is to examine the effectiveness in the oral health promotion through the oral health education for high school students. In adolescence, there seems to be the high incidences of dental caries, gingivitis and periodontal diseases. Concerning preventing all such outbreaks, this study focuses on applying the oral health education to their health education, and on analyzing its effectiveness. Methods : To verify its effectiveness, this research administered 85 students of both genders of a certain high school in Seoul during May-October 2010, followed by the evaluation of DMFT, S-PHP, and CPITN. Results : First, the oral health promotion through the education was statistically significant in the permanent effects of index (FT index). Second, the effect of S-PHP index gradually decreased in statistics from the first to the fifth session, but, after five months ever since the education, it seemed relatively higher in the next sessions. Third, the changing in the level of CPITN decreased continuously as the students received the education repeatedly, but there is no significant difference in statistics for each session. Conclusions : For the oral health promotion in the high school students, the education ought to be focused on the behavior-change objectives rather than on the knowledge-based objectives. The repeated education for tooth-brushing instruction should be stressed for preventing from returning to the old bad behaviors.
Objectives: The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between smoking behavior and periodontitis in Korean adults. Methods: The study subjects were 4,896 from the sixth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Data were analysed by chi-square test and multiple logistic regression analysis using SPSS 20.0 program. Results: The rate of periodontitis was 27.5%. The prevalence rate of periodontitis was closely related to socio-economic characteristics including gender, age, living area, household income, educational level, history of diabetes mellitus, and regular dental visit. The rate of periodontitis in non-smoker, ex-smoker, and current smoker were 56.7%, 19.5%, and 23.8%, respectively. Smoking behavior was significantly related to socio-economic characteristics. After adjusting for gender, age, household income, educational level, history of diabetes mellitus, and dental visit within 1 year, the risk of periodontitis in ex-smoker and current group were 1.31 (95% CI; 1.04-1.65) and 2.31 (95% CI; 1.87-2.85), respectively. Conclusions: Smoking behavior had a significant impact on periodontitis prevalence in Korean adults.
Objectives: The objective of the study is to investigate the effect of oral health belief and metabolic syndrome on CPITN. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 847 adult visitors over 20 years old in Busan from August 1 to December 31, 2011. Except incomplete answers, 776 data were analyzed by t-test, one way ANOVA, and logistic regression analysis using SPSS 20.0 program. The questionnaire comprised general characteristics of the subjects, oral health behavior, and metabolic syndrome related risk factors. Results: There was statistically significant difference of an oral health belief rating between the groups receiving oral health education. Community periodontal index had statistically significant difference depending on smoking and waist circumference. To analyze related factors of community periodontal index, multiple logistic regression analysis was performed. As the final outcome, gender, age, benefit, salience, scaling experience, experience of oral health education, and related factors and metabolic syndrome were shown to impact on significant influence (p<0.05). Conclusions: Thus, To manage the effective oral health, it is necessary to control the factors of metabolic syndrome and oral health.
