  • As polarization and class reproduction between generations are considered to be serious problems in Korean society, increasing number of assortative mating, which means marrying between homogeneous family background, income class, and educational background, is on the spotlight socially. Some worry that the increase of assortative mating can reinforce closure of social mobility so it deepens inequality and limits class mobility between generations. This research analyzes the effects of accomplishment characteristics of husbands and wives and ascriptive characteristics of parents which consist the concept of assortative mating, on income, consumption, and assets those represent economic status of a family. The purpose of this research is to suggest empirical understanding on the role of assortative mating that affect on inequality within generations and income mobility between generations in Korean society. In the result of multiple regression analysis on the effect of assortative mating on income, consumption, and assets, high educational background was the factor that increase income and consumption level as accomplishment characteristics of assortative mating. As ascriptive characteristics of assortative mating, educational homogeneous of fathers was the factor that increased asset level. While accomplishment characteristics affect income and consumption, ascriptive characteristics of homogeneous had significant effect on assets. Thus, it was found that transfer between generations had effects around asset rather than income. In particular, ascriptive characteristics in young husbands and wives aged 20s or 30s had significant effect only on the assets.

  • This paper suggests a way of estimating the value of interclass equity improvement by railway operations. Equity is understood in this paper in the context of a mobility gap between classes. The value of the reduced mobility gap by railway operations is interpreted as an increase of social equity. In particular, the unit value of equity improvement by rail services is quantified based on the amount of fare reduction through public service obligations. The difference in the surplus calculation between elastic and inelastic demands relative to the reduction is also discussed. The result of this study is expected to be helpful of performing more cautious appraisal for rail investment schemes.

  • This study attempts to identify the structure of class conflict in Korea and to suggest an alternative framework for a empathetic society. The objective and subjective level of satisfaction with life and class consciousness are in direct proportion, and status consistency signifies polarization. Distorted distribution structures and cultural values make income disparity and property disputes widen, which in turn lead to educational divides and status fixations, refracting or blocking the possibility of social mobility. By overcoming the COVID-19 crisis, it is not appropriate to go back to the past but to correct wrong consciousness and practices in the past, and the consistency between the state and members of society must be re-established. Through the process of innovation at the economic, global, and digital level, a major transformation is required in the new normal era, which prioritizes social development for human values. The conflict resolution depends on the solidarity of the community as a social foundation, since an empathetic society needs the trust and communication of the members of the society.

  • This paper aims at analysing what impacts the experience of self-employed business have had on the income mobility. Since 2000s, the flexibilization of labor market and the population aging led to the increase of the number of self-employed job as many retirees at the age of early 50s has set up the self-employed business as a bridge job. However, previous researches just have emphasized on the impoverishment of the self-employed, but not focused on what different effects the experience of self-employed had on the income class mobility by age group. This paper compares the difference in the income class mobility by age group and employment status, and analyses its longitudinal trends. According to the result, as a whole the experience of self-employed has positive effect on the upper mobility of income class, but it become disadvantageous for the upper mobility as the age goes up. When belonging to the age group over 60s, the experience of self-employed rather increases the risk of lowering income class. Just as the experience of self-employed has different effects on income class mobility by age group, so the differentiated measures for age groups are demanded.

  • One of the debates regarding the college admission systems is about which admissions screening works as a mechanism for social mobility, between early and regular admissions. This study attempted to contribute to related discussions by analyzing the income level of college admissions students according to the admissions screening (early vs. regular admissions) using data from the third year survey of the Korean Education & Employment Panel II (KEEP II). Analyzing the dataset, we found that parental income was almost the same between students admitted from early and regular admissions. To be specific, average monthly parental income was 586.4 million Korean Won for students admitted from early admission while it was 585.4 million Korean Won for those admitted from regular admission, which means that the difference between the two was neither practically nor statistically significant. Applying the chi-square test, we tested whether the relationship between parental income and types of college admissions and found no statistical significance. Finally, categorizing colleges where students are admitted by ranking, we compared parental incomes among students. We found that parental income was higher for top-ranked universities, and that parental income was higher for students admitted from early admission. We concluded that early admission can possibly be an admission system for "well-offs" between the two, and that early admission may not be working as a pathway to facilitate social mobility compared to the regular admissions.

And the solution of polarization is divided into 4 categories such as Progressive Solution, Moderate Progressive Solution, Moderate Conservative Solution, Conservative Solution. On the basis of the cross-tabulation of the reason and solution of polarization, Most of Korean have tendency to cognize the reason of polarization conservatively, but the solution of polarization is cognized progressively. And This study tries to discuss the meaning of the categories and the implications for consensual communication of Social polarization in korean society.

  • In Korea, 'spoon class discourse' has attracted public attention in the press and among young people, which reflects that mass awareness that the class status structure is clearly rooted in the society becomes widespread. Although income distribution has been improved since late 2000s, it is interesting that Korean people's subjective perception concerning class mobility and social justice has been worsemed. By using the survey data on people's perception of opportunity inequality, this study finds that Korean people have by and large negative subjective awareness regarding socio-economic opportunity inequality, magnitude of opportunity inequality, and achievement by efforts, and that the degree of the negative perception is greater in accordance with the people's subjective identification. The regression analysis reveals that the social status of respondents and their parents(-), experience of discrimination(+), age(-), and high education of college and above (+) have consistent effect over socio-economic opportunity inequality, magnitude of opportunity inequality, and achievement by efforts with statistical significance. More concretely, as people have lower subjective status identification at the time of parent generation and their own generation, as they have the experience of discriminatory misconduct, and as they are young and highly educated, they have negative or pessimistic perception regarding opportuinity inequality. In addition, it is revealed that the unemployed and non-regular workers have significantly negative perception on socio-economic opportunity inequality, magnitude of opportunity inequality, while negative perception on the magnitude of opportunity inequality and achievement by efforts is noticeable among high and middle income households.

  • Punch awakens the audience of necessity of social change related to the poverty and prejudice toward the underprivileged. However Bourdieu claims individuals such as Dong-Ju Lee can not change existing dominant order even if they struggle for social change. In particular, laughter effect and romantic gaze as a commercial strategy on Punch become mechanism for maintaining the symbolic violence. And this is soon to be recognized as legitimate victims of violence themselves, as Bourdieu has argued that maintaining social order and reproduction by collusion are possible.
