  • Some spread-effects and their dynamics accruing to regional community from the new location of large firms would be an interesting theme in economic geography On the assumption that all firms not only should. have cooperative relations with their regional communities but also try to realize such cooperations in case of locating their facilities, some rationale for their philanthropic activities will be discussed in this paper. The focus of this paper is on the community contributions or philanthropy which are executed as the non-profit motivated activities of firms. Why and how should firms respond to the growing requirements of their communities, and what type of philanthropic activities could be good for their social behavioral contexts are the questions to be solved in this study. It is possible to get some guidelines of a firm's philanthropy through the comparisons on the practices in the three largest firm.5: Kodak. Dupont, and POSCO.

  • Obesity is a risk factor for various diseases as well as itself a disease and associated with socioeconomic factors. The obesity proportion has been increasing in Korea over about 15 years so that investigation of the socioeconomic factors related with obesity is important in terms of preventation of obesity. In particular, the association between obesity and socioeconomic status varies with gender and has spatial dependency. In the paper, we estimate the effects of socioeconomic factors on obesity proportion by gender, considering the spatial correlation. Here, a conditional autoregressive model under the Bayesian framework is used in order to take into account the spatial dependency. For the real applicaiton, we use the obestiy proportion dataset at 25 districts of Seoul in 2010. We compare the proposed spatial model with a non-spatial model in terms of the goodness-of-fit and prediction measures so the spatial model performs well.

  • Japan is now facing an aging society with fewer children. According to the demographic change in Japan, its economic effect on the economic growth has gained public attention. This paper focuses on the effect of the demographic change on economic growth in Japan, too. The first part illustrates the process of demographic transition in Japan. Thanks to successful Meiji Revitalizing Reform, Japan had experienced demographic transition earlier than the other East Asia countries. The second part of this paper describes relations between demographic factors and economic growth theoretically. In addition, it analyzes demographic effects on economic growth empirically using time series data of Japan from 1952 to 2005. It is the main finding of analyses that there are positive relations between demographic factor, including employment population rate, population rate and TFR, and economic growth. Therefore, in the near future, a decreasing labor force will cause economic stagnation in Japan. To overcome this problems, it is required to make various policies.

  • This study explores the causes of online helping behavior. This study tests the effects of various explanatory factors on the basis of previous studies on helping behavior. These factors include social demographic, situational, motivational, and social capital factors. According to the survey of 475 university students living in Seoul in 2010, age and religion have significant effects on online helping behavior. In addition, the perceived helping opportunity, time and effort cost to help, and social capital factor have significant effects on online helping behavior. Results reveal that the effect of social capital factor is the largest among other variables. However, it is shown that the effects of benefit from helping, empathy, and personal norm are not statistically significant. It is also revealed that the effect of social capital factor is important across all types of online helping behavior except information helping. The policy implications are discussed.

  • Various international reports have shown strong proof that socioeconomic and sociodemographic variables are correlated with allergic diseases, yet little is known about how these variables affect Korean adolescents. This study was conducted to identify the socioeconomic and sociodemographic risk factors for allergic diseases of Korean adolescents, and to provide information for preventing and managing such conditions. Data from the 2018 Korean Youth Risk Behavior Survey (KYRBS) of 60,040 adolescents was used for this study. An anonymously administered online survey was conducted to collect information on the dependent variables. The independent variables were asthma, allergic rhinitis and atopic dermatitis. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to analyze the correlations between the dependent variables and the independent variables. Low economic status, living with mother, high education level of parents, high school record, obesity, drinking and smoking were the risk factors for asthma. Low economic status, the place of residence, living with mother, high education level of the parents, gender, high school record, obesity, drinking and smoking were the risk factors for allergic rhinitis. Low economic status, living with mother, high education level of parents, genderhigh school record, obesity and drinking were the risk factors for atopic dermatitis. We found that low socioeconomic status and unhealthy behavior were the risk factor for allergic diseases of Korean adolescents. Balanced economic growth in the community and controlling unhealthy behavior can help reduce the prevalence of allergic diseases.
