  • Old river channels have been formed by engineering a straight channel in Korea. This can be classified as wetland-type or land-type. The wetland-type old river channel uses parts of agricultural water supply. However, the channels have been neglected since there are problems associated with poor water quality, reduced water level, ecosystem disturbance, etc. Thus, river maintenance through preservation and restoration of old river channel can be very effective in watershed management. To achieve this, functional assessment of wetland-type old river channel is a priority need. This study applied the wetland-type channel in Mangyoung river for functional assessment. It was formed these channels with regard to the following four major criteria (Natureless, Habitat, Water-friendliness and Water quality) and 21 indices. The indices managed by measuring depending in weights. Consequently, wetland-type channel in Mangyoung river was in good condition both natureless and habitat, while it was a fragile environment in water-friendliness and water quality. In particular, the areas where it has insufficiency water and water suffering from eutrophication needs urgent improvement. This results will be used to utilize wetland-type old river channel as watershed management.

  • The accurate estimation of discharge is very essential as the important factor of river design for the utilization and flood control, hydraulic construction design. The present discharge production is using the stage-discharge relationship curve in the river. The rating curve uses the method by predicting the discharge based on regression analysis using the measured stage and discharge data in a flood season. The method is comparatively convenient and has especially advantages in that it can predict the discharge having the difficulty of observation in a flood season. However, this method has basically room for improvement because the method only uses the relationship between stage and discharge, and doesn't reflect the hydraulic parameters such as hydraulic radius, energy slope, roughness, topography, etc.. Therefore, in this study, discharge was predicted using the convenient calculation method with empirical parameters of the Manning and Chezy equations, which were proposed by Choo et at (2011) in KSCE as a new methodology for estimating discharge in open channel. The proposed method can conveniently estimate empirical parameters in both of Manning and Chezy equations and the discharge is estimated in the open channels. There are proved by using data measured in meandering lab. channel and India canal and the accuracies show about determination coefficient 0.8. Accordingly, this method will be used in actual field if this study is continuously conducted.

  • One of the characteristics of fluvial river channel with sand bed-material is the existence of movable sand bars not occupied with vegetation. However, sand bars at the Hahoe's reach of the Nakdong River showing a double-meandering channel has been changed into expanding vegetation area. Moreover, sand material, in recent years, has stopped moving to downstream in channel and the number and area of bare bars which did not occupied by vegetation have been decreased. In order to find out the mechanism, we carried out the channel characteristics surveys such as hydro-geomorphologic, soil physio-chemical and vegetation surveys were conducted twice on autumn season in 2005,2006. The results so far achieved showed that the reduced discharge of transported sediment and duration of dry season might be critical factors for the spread of luxuriant vegetation. The vegetation area was significantly expanded by floods exceeding the subsequent dominant flow discharge. Furthermore, the expansion of vegetation area was highly correlated with the supply of organic matter, nutrients and alteration of soil texture by sediment deposition during the flooding event.

  • The Naeseong Stream is a meandering sand-bed stream flowing through mountains and has so long maintained its geomorphological uniqueness characterized by extensive braided bare bars. Recently, its long-lasting landscape has been changed due to encroachment of vegetation. In this study being a part of long-term monitoring research morphological changes of the 56.8 km long study reach of the Naeseong Stream, which occurred during the period of 2012 - 2016 were analyzed. Airborne LiDAR and terrestrial cross-section surveys were carried out. Hydrological and on-site investigation data were also collected. Among the main four sites, two bend reaches showed point bars enlarged, while along the other two straight reaches mid-channel bars were either newly formed or increased in area and height. At the highest deposition point of each bar, vertical changes which were caused by one or two times of sediment deposition amounted to 0.6 - 1.4 m. On the contrary channel bed degradation was not obvious. Overall morphological changes in the study reach were attributed to deposition of sediment which occurred during the flood in July 2016 on the bar surfaces vegetated during the precedent dry seasons. These kind of geomorphological processes are thought to be the same as those related to the existing mid-channel islands along the mid- and downstream reach of the Naeseong Stream.

  • This paper will describe lunar lava tubes' five analyzed fields, such as geology, geomorphology, internal configuration, stability, communication and habitats requirements. This research gets through qualitative and qualitative data analysis as following results. A huge size and configuration differences between lunar lava tubes and earth one on geology and landform environments. Exo-genetics activities, such as meteorites, radiation, and sudden temperature bigger affect than Endo-genetic activities, such as effusion and earthquake of the lunar lava tubes. Landform and internal configuration of the lunar lava tubes due to the huge cave perilous landform that gravity difference have a technical limitation from internal approach and data obtain of the huge skylights and sinuous rilles. Stability of the lunar lava tubes deals with geology and landform. It was obvious geo-structural stability elements results generated on low rate of collapsed halls(skylights), low gravity, and relatively thick covers. In terms of the communication capability on the external and internal lunar lava tubes cordless communication techniques will overcome limitations of the sun-power generates supporting communication systems. Through this research it realized obvious differs between potential habitats possibility by accumulative theories by scholars and techniques of the lunar lava tubes. Especially, it is a favorable expectation throughout overcoming attempt on zero gravity, cosmo radiation, lunar dust of the exo-genetic limitations to the steep escarpment of skylights to approach and achieve techniques by the civil engineering, networking and GIS techniques as the endo-genetic environment treatment.

  • Current re-arrangement of rivers and waterways have been made uniformly ignoring characteristics of individual rivers thereby aggravating artificial river restructuring. On the contrary, quantitative techniques to evaluate the aftermath of artificial river disturbance such as uprising of river bed, intrusion of foreign fisheries, and changes of ecological habitats are not available. To establish such quantitative techniques, analysis of the river changes to evaluate the major causes of the river disturbance and its impacts is essential. Therefore, research for proposing a method which can be applied for the development of techniques to investigate river disturbance according to the major factors for the domestic rivers using airphotos and GIS techniques was preceded. In this study, the study area on the downstream of the river was selected and analysis of river disturbance using preceding method was done to confirm the benefit of analyzing river disturbance using GIS techniques. Trend analysis of the waterway sinuosity and changes of the flow path leaded to detailed verification of the river disturbance for specific location or time period, and this enabled to generate relatively accurate numbers representing sinuosity of the waterway and relevant changes. Also, it is possible to predict the effect on the current re-arrangement of the river and waterway to river flow using the analysis of past river change. It is necessary to establish GIS based proper measures for environmental river restoration using the results from this study and future works.

  • An in vitro study on cariogenic potential of 8 over-the-counter syrups for children was performed. The experimental groups were 8 over-the-counter syrups. The positive control group was 10% sucrose solution, and the negative control group was artificial saliva. The pH of each group was determined. The buffering capacity was measured by the volume of 2 N NaOH adding to equalize the pH of 20 ml of experimental solution to pH 7. The consistency was measured by the time to pass Ostwald pipette for 2 ml of the experimental solution. The experimental solutions were inoculated with S. mutans and cultured in $37^{\circ}C$ anaerobic condition for 48 hours. To estimate acid production, pH of the experimental solutions were measured before and after the culture. The primary teeth specimens were soaked in the experimental solutions for 20 minutes three times a day. Except on those hours the specimens were stored in artificial saliva. After 5 days, the microhardness changes of the specimens were measured. These results show that most of syrup-form medicines for children tend to have cariogenic potential partially in endogenous pH, buffering capacity, consistency, acid production and erosive ability of enamel. For the oral health of children, the alternative sweeteners (ex. xylitol) may be substituted for the cariogenic sweeteners of syrups. Additionally, It may be helpful that the chewable tablet replace liquid or syrup in term of dose form.

  • It has been widely known that the effect of diffracted waves at the tip of composite breakwater with finite length causes the change of standing wave height along the length of breakwater, the spatial change of wave pressure on caisson, and the occurrence of meandering damage on the different sliding distance in sequence. It is hard to deal with the spatial change of wave force on trunk of breakwater through the two-dimensional experiment and/or numerical analysis. In this study, two and three-dimensional numerical techniques with olaFlow model are used to approach the spatial change of wave force including the impulsive breaking wave pressure applied to trunk of breakwater, the effect of rear region, and the occurrence of diffracted waves at the tip of caisson located on the high crested rubble mound. In addition, it is thoroughly studied the mean wave height, mean horizontal velocity, and mean turbulent kinetic energy through the numerical analysis. In conclusion, it is confirmed that the larger wave pressure occurs at the front wall of caisson around the still water level than the original design conditions when it generates the shock-crushing wave pressure checked by not two-dimensional analysis, but three-dimensional analysis through the change of wave pressure applied to the caisson along the length of breakwater.

  • The present study aims to investigate the long-term channel morphological changes derived from channelization, embankment and levee construction works in unregulated fluvial channel of the Jiseock River. Analyses of aerial photographs taken past (Year 1966) and recent (Year 2002) showed the temporally remarkable changes in channel planform such as channel shape, bar migration, vegetation encroachment in bar. During the period, the natural single threading changed into braided types together with decreasing sinuosity by 9.2%, increasing vegetation occupied bar ranged 97% of total bars area. Because such channel morphological changes are closely similar to those in dam downstream channels, we assume that both/either flow regime alteration and/or sediment transport discontinuity may be critical for the fixed channel and spread of vegetated bars even in unregulated river without dam reservoir upstream. We found more reduced frequency and magnitude of flooding water level comparing with past, but no significant alteration of inter annual water level variation. Bed material has been coarsened by 4~5 times and the riverbed has been degraded in overall channel but aggraded locally in conjunction reach of tributaries. The results indicates that reduced sediment dynamics in fluvial channel which derived by bed material coarsening, river bed degradation and unbalanced sediment transport capacity between tributary and mainstem can be a causal factor to trigger channel morphological changes even in unregulated rivers.

  • This paper aims to develop the numerical model for prediction of the channel migration by analyzing of sediment and flow characteristics with patterns of channel in alluvial rivers. Flow in rivers constitutes to be the meandering or the braided form and rarely straight channel through morphologically stable patterns with mutual actions between the flowing water and bed materials. In order to develop the model for simulation of the channel migration, the channels are divided into two types with positive or negative sign by the direction of curvature radius of the centerline channel ($r_c$). That is, the single bend-channel consists of only one curvature of positive or negative sign and the multi-bend channel consists of two more curvatures of positive or negative sign, respectively. The model analyzes the sediment and flow characteristics under the influence of superelevation, spiral motion, irregularity in bed topography and depth-averaged velocity of channels. For reliability of this model, the single bend-channel and the multi bend channel are compared with experiment data in other models and the measured field data in the Keum-River, respectively. As a result, the both com parisians turn out to be excellent.
