The integrated soil improvement practice reduced neck blast incidence by ranging from 6.3 to 59.5 percent compared to control plot. However, effect of integrated soil improvement practice in reducing neck blast incidence was greater in Tongil type cultivars. On the contrary, mean value of plant height of eleven rice cultivars was taller by 6.4cm in the integrated soil improvement plot with 2.3 more tillers than that of control plot. As a result, yield increase of milled rice by metric tons per hectare was 24.1 percent in the integrated soil improvement plot.
Addition of heavy textured red earth is being recommended to improve the texture and nutirent retention capacity of sandy soil in Korea. However, farmers are not favorable to this description because of high transportation cost and hard working. To solve this pending problem a field experiment was carried out to investigate the possibility of application of Zeolite as a foreign earth material to improve the physical and chemical characteristics of sandy soil. The experiment results suggested that Zeolite mixed with the basal N fertilizer would be substituted for other foreign earth materials in aspects of rice yield and nitrogen uptake of rice shoot. On the other hand, ammonium adsorption characteristics of soil and amendments were studied.
To grasp the physico-chemical properties on the management groups of upland soil, the data obtained from the detailed soil survey which conducted from 1964 to 1979 by Agricultural sciences Institute, were analyzed and classified. The clay content in A horizon soil was low in sandy textured and well adapted types and high in heavy clayey type, and that in B horizon was lowest in volcanic ash type and highest in heavy clayey type. High organic matter content was found in the volcanic ash and plateau type. The correlations among soil physico-chemical properties were significant. Especially canon exchange capacity of B horizon soil was highly correlated with the content of available water, clay, silt and organic matter positively.
Laboratory experiments were conducted to estimate extractable nitrogen by buffer phosphate solution of pH 7. A series of experiment soils were a) Sandy soil applied with compost, lime, and Wallastonite every years for 32 years. b) Sandy soils with and without waterlogging for 70 days before transplanting. c) Normal soils produced high and common yields. The results were summarized as follows: 1. Extractable organic nitrogen by pH 7 phosphate buffer solution was increased in order of NPK + compost > NPK > NPK + compost + lime + Wollast-onite > NPK + compost + lime > NPK + wollastonite > no fertilizer plot. 2. Extractable organic nitrogens at plots of NPK and NPK + compost were decreased as the growth stage processed regardless of tretments. 3. In case of normal soils having high and common yields the content of total N, organic matter and $NH_4-N$ were increased in high productive soil, while, only $NO_3-N$ content was increased in common productive soil. Especially, there was a highly positive correlation between extractable total nitrogen and $NH_4-N$ content submerged for 4 weeks under incubated condition. 4. Organic nitrogen content of soil was increased on the condition of non-waterlogging, however, nitrogen uptake by rice plant was increased in waterlogged paddy. 5. The content of extractable total nitrogen increased in the order of normal soil, sandy soil, unmatured soil, saline soil, and estimation of optimum nitrogen rates by extracted organic nitrogen was in order of saline soil, unmatured soil, sandy soil, normal soil.

Adsorption onto the surfaces of solid particles is a well known phenomenon that causes the retardation effect of heavy metals in soils. For adequate remediation of soil and groundwater contamination, it is important to investigate the mobility of heavy metals that largely depends on pH conditions in the soil water since adsorption of heavy metals is pH-dependent. In this study, we investigated the transport of Zn ion under various pH conditions in a sandy soil by conducting batch and column tests. The batch test was performed using the standard procedure of equilibrating fine fractions collected from the soil with eleven different initial $ZnCl_2$ concentrations, and analysis of Zn ion in the equilibrated solutions using ICP-AES. The column test consisted of monitoring the concentrations of soil solutions exiting the soil column with time known as a breakthrough curve (BTC). We injected respectively $ZnCl_2$ and KCl solutions with the concentration of 10 g/L as a tracer in a square pulse type under three different pH conditions (7.7, 5.8, 4.1) and monitored the flux concentration at the exit boundary using an EC meter and ICP-AES. The resident concentration was also monitored at the 10cm-depth by Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR). The results of batch test showed that ion exchange process between Zn and other cations (Ca, Mg) was predominant. The retardation coefficients obtained from adsorption isotherms (Linear, Freundlich, Langmuir) resulted in the various values ranging from 1.2 to 614.1. No retardation effect but ion exchange was found for the BTCs under all pH conditions. This can be explained by the absence of other cations to desorb Zn ion from soil exchange sites under the conditions of ETC experiment imposing blank water as leachate in steady-state flow. As pH decreased, the peak concentration of Zn increased due to the competition of Zn with hydrogen ions ($H^+$) and the concentrations of other cations decreased. The peak concentration of Zn was increased by 12.7 times as pH decreased from 7.7 to 4.1.
Column tests were conducted to investigate the optimal condition of surfactant solution pH that can affect the removal efficiency in surfactant-assisted remediation. Toluene and 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene were chosen as the model hydrophobic substances. Two Iowa soils, Fruitfield sand and Webster clay loam, were leached with solutions of 4%(v/v) sodium diphenyl oxide disulfonate (DOSL, trade name Dowfax 8390), or 4%(v/v) trideceth-19-carboxylic acid (TDCA, trade name Sandopan JA36), or 4% (v/v) octylphenoxypoly ethoxyethanol (OPEE, trade name Triton X100). The test results revealed that a maximum removal of toluene and 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene was obtained at pH 10 of surfactant solution, and maximum recoveries of added toluene (94%) or 1 ,2,4- trichlorobenzene (97 %) were obtained for DOSL surfactant solution in Fruitfield sandy soil column. Increased removal efficiency by pH control of both toluene and 1,2,4trichlorobenzene was 16% and 20% for DOSL with Fruitfild sandy soil, respectively. In addition, the maximum recoveries of added toluene or I ,2,4-trichlorobenzene were 89% and 93% for DOSL surfactant solution in Webster clay loam soil column. The maximum increase of toluene and 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene removal was 26% and 19% for DOSL with Webster clay loam soil, respectively. These experimental results indicate that maintaining a high pH surfactant solution in surfactant-assisted remediation is desirable for efficient removal of NAPLs from contminated soils.
A green house experiment was conducted to find out the differences in the amount of biologically fixed nitrogen and kjeldahl nitrogen on the different soil texture, kinds and amounts of fertilizer nitrogen under light (photosynthetic $N_2$-fixation) and dark (heterotrophic $N_2$-fixation) condition in submerged paddy soil. The reults obtained were summarized as follows; 1. The amount of biologically fixed nitrogen per mg carbon from different organic matter was obtained as 0.13 mg in glucose, 0.09 mg in rice straw, and 0.07 mg in refused mushroom compost and barley straw under 60 days of incubation. 2. Nitrogen fixing activities were decreased with increase of fertilizer nitrogen and those tendency was pronounced more in sandy soil with application of urea than that of ammonium sulfate. 3. The application of ammonium sulfate in sandy soil under light condition was increased the photosynthetic $N_2$-fixation and the applied urea was remarkably reduced the heterotrophic $N_2$-fixation in sandy soil. The proportion of biologically fixed total nitrogen after experiment in sandy soil was obtained as 25% for dark(heterotrophic $N_2$-fixation) and 75% for light (photosynthetic $N_2$-fixation) condition. On the other hand, very similar biological $N_2$-fixing tendency was obtained between kinds of nitrogen fertilizer and two light condition in clayey soil. 4. The kjeldahl nitrogen was remarkably decreased after experiment under dark condition with application of urea than that of light condition with ammonium sulfate, and no remarkable decreasing tendency was obtained in clayey soil between two kinds of fertilizer nitrogen. 5. The high significant positive correlationship was obtained between calculated biological nitrogen fixation by acetylene reducing activity and kjeldahl nitrogen after experiment under light (y=0.8488X-5.9632, $r=0.9928^{**}$, n=21) and dark (y=0.8795X-7.1056, $r=0.9782^{**}$, n=21) condition. In this experiment condition, conversion factors of 6:1 was obtained from biological nitrogen fixation to soil nitrogen.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of soil types and soil properties on wood preservative leaching. Radiata pine (Pinus radiata Don.) sapwood stakes, which had been treated with 2.0%(w/v) CCA, were leached for 12 weeks by a common laboratory method in four different soils and for 14 days by the AWPA standard leaching method in water. The physical and chemical properties of the four soils were determined, and the percent leaching of the individual component of CCA was correlated with the various soil properties. The data show that leaching of preservative chemicals from treated wood exposed to soil is influenced by the type of soil. The preservative leaching was greater when wood was exposed to water than when the wood was in contact with water-saturated soil. The greatest chromium, copper and arsenic leaching from CCA-treated stakes were observed in the sandy loam, loam, and sand, respectively, and the least amount of leaching of CCA components occurred in the silty loam. The leaching of preservative components from treated wood is extremely complex and appears to be influenced differently by the soil properties. The extent of copper leaching from CCA treated wood appears to be related to exchangeable Mg and sum of bases. There is a reasonably good relationship between chromium leaching and exchangeable Mg, and between arsenic leaching and exchangeable K, soil Ni, Mn, Fe, Cr, or Cu content. Since this study was conducted based on laboratory leaching method using small cross-sectional dimensions; thus, data obtained from this experiment should not be used to predict leaching characteristics from commercial-size wood used in real situation. Accordingly, further studies are necessary using outdoor ground-contact leaching.
This study was undertaken to elucidate the behavior of herbicide bensulfuron methyl [ methyl 2-[[[[[(4, 6-dimethoxy pryrimidine-2yl) amino] carbonyl] amino] sulfonyl] methyl] benzoate] in soils under flooded conditions using the test plant Monochoria vaginalis Pres 1. Besulfuron methyl moved to 3cm depth in clay loam soil and 4 cm depth in sandy loam soil. Herbicide-treated layer was found 0 to 2 cm profile in the former and 0 to 3 cm profile the latter. The half life (GR50) was 87 days in clay loam soil and 78 days in sandy clay loam soil. The period of inactivation lasted for 110 days in clay loam and 100 days in sandy clay loam soil.

The purpose of this study is to clarify the behavior of stranded crude oil and to estimate the restoration of seawater infiltration by application of dispersant as one of cleaning techniques. We made visualization of infiltration process of seawater and stranded crude oil on the sandy beach sediments by using of a model sandy beach. Major conclusions derived from this study are as follows. The seawater infiltration volume was reduced by the stranded crude oil. However, thirty percentage of the sweater infiltration into the sediments was restored by dispersant application to the penetrated oil in sandy beach. The penetration depth of stranded oil were dropped at first falling tide, but were not significantly fluctuated after that. Moreover, oil concentration was most high within the upper 2 cm. The stranded crude oil was broken into small size droplets and dispersed into the sediments by the dispersant application. Therefore, dispersant applications play an important roles in the large increase of surface area of given volume of oil, and it resulted in promoting to biological degradation process at the oil/water interface, dispersing the stranded oil into the water column and restoration of the supplement of the dissolved oxygen and nutrients to the benthic organisms.
