  • Percival Lowell took photographs of 80s during his stay in Korea in the winter of 1883 and 1884. The photographs are the first in the history of Korea and contain various and precious information about Korea of the day. As such, they could be used for purposes of studying late 19th century Chosōn society. The 61 photographs that are archived in Boston Museum of Fine Art were catalogued by National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage and have been posted online with incorrect explanations by Boston Museum of Fine Art. The explanations have been composed and revised at least four times on the basis of Lowell's writings and archivists' understandings of Korea. However these explanations contain many errors regarding the content of the photographs, yet have been cited by researchers and books concerning the history of Korea. I examined the explanations, analyzed Lowell's writings and diplomatic documents, and confirmed the locations where the photographs were taken. Accordingly, I suggest improved explanations of the photographs to prevent misuse of the Boston Museum of Fine Art's online archive. Lowell's photographs of Chosōn have very high historical value and could be used in various cultural fields because of their various contents and high definition. However, they belong to America and are not cared for sufficiently. Therefore, I suggest that high definition digital scans and prints of the photographs be generated for the sake of overseas Korean cultural heritage collection.

  • The intention of this study is to construct the spatial database and to extract attribute data which are able to complete the omitted data in the topographical map or completion map of construction using the image data of various form such as artificial satellite images, aerial photographs, terrestrial photographs and so on. This study used the single frame images only for the raw image data, supposing the case of rigorous photogrammetric method is not available or rapid acquisition of information is need. The extracted spatial and attribute data from the images are used for modifying and updating the database, and for providing visual effect useful for guide and management of the facilities. This study intended to develop the technique able to apply in the case where comparative high accuracy is not required or rapid modification is necessary, and to verify the possibility of editing and updating the digital map using the photographs or video images remained as old data. Many of previous research on the management system for university facility has been accomplished focusing on the design and construction of database itself. Otherwise, this study aimed for the construction of guide and management system based on compiling the digital map of present state using multi-imagery, and the more applicability was intended too.

  • Smartphones store a vast amount of personal data, including photos, but they are not organized, making it difficult for users to quickly find necessary information. Therefore, this paper proposed and implemented a system Visualize Me By Photo that makes photos in smartphones into a knowledge graph and easily searches for photos. Using artificial intelligence technology, the knowledge graph was generated by extracting up to 53 types of knowledge from the photos and establishing the relationship between the photo and knowledge in the photo. In addition, this paper implemented a focusing search function that searches for other photos by drawing circles in a specific area of the image and natural language search for easy search. In conclusion, this study has greatly facilitated photo searches as well as the management of photos on smartphones by construction of a knowledge graph of photos.

  • The Florence Charter, established in 1981 by the ICOMOS-IFLA International Commission on Historic Gardens, considered the historic garden as a plant-dominated architectural composition, a perpetual balance between the artist and the artisan's desire to remain unaltered in perpetuity. Trees, the main component of the garden, require continuous management as they repeat their creation and calling according to the cycle of the seasons and accordingly, it is suggested that management to maintain the appearance of trees in Korean palaces was an indispensable element. Although it is an important matter to historically verify the tree management techniques of the palaces of the past, research has been difficult due to the absence of historical records and the disconnection of life due to the Japanese colonial period. In addition, according to the view that trees were not generally managed in the palace, research on palace tree management techniques has not been conducted so far. Therefore, this study aimed to examine whether or not the tree management of the palaces was performed in the past through expert interviews based on photographs taken in modern times. With the identification of tree species and pruning through in-depth interviews with experts using photographs taken in the modern period, the results are as follows. First, it was found that the shapes of trees and leaves could be identified through photographs and by observing the phenomena caused by planting and pruning, it was possible to estimate whether or not the tree management was implemented in the modern palace. Second, as a result of in-depth interviews with 8 experts in 4 fields, it was possible to determine the tree species and pruning status, purpose, and method. There was no significant difference in opinions between groups, and the evidence was clearly presented. Third, the type of management of trees in the palace was mainly found to be determination of the types of tree, removal of hazardous factors of trees, and management of lower vegetation and through the photographs of Jondeokjeong and Gwanwanjeong, it was confirmed that the trees were managed even before the Japanese colonial era, considering the time of filming. Based on the photographs taken, it was possible to estimate whether the trees were managed before the Japanese colonial period through expert interviews. However, it could not be clarified due to lack of historical materials as to whether it was carried out on its own according to the circumstances of the times or by the Japanese Empire. Still, in this study, evidence was obtained to refute the view that trees of the palace were not managed in the past through the collected data. Expert opinions supporting this view were collected to make the conclusion. In addition, based on the general theory of pruning, an empirical review of expert opinions was conducted to secure the reliability of the research results.
