Expansion of Riparian Vegetation Due to Change of Flood Regime in the Cheongmi-cheon Stream, Korea (청미천에서 홍수 유황의 변화에 따른 하안식생의 확장)

  • The distribution of floodplain vegetation is mainly affected by hydrological and hydraulic processes. In this study, we investigated changes in the vegetation distribution due to flood discharge alteration, and the relationship between the vegetation types and the flood frequency during the last ten-year period in the Cheongmi-cheon Stream. Flood discharge of the Cheongmi-cheon Stream tended to decrease from 2006 to 2016. It has greatly decreased to less than $160m^3/s$ since 2013. This resulted in the settlement of Phragmites japonica to the wide sand bar at the Cheongmi-cheon Stream, even though it had sparse vegetation before 2013. The sand bar was fully covered with P. japonica in 2016. Vegetation communities in the floodplain were classified by dominant species, i.e. the annual-hygrophytic, the perennial hygrophytic and the mesophytic communities. Analysis of the relationship between the vegetation communities and the flood frequency shows the annual hygrophytes, perennial hygrophytes and the mesophytes communities distributed in the range of under 1 year, 1-10 year and over 7 year flood inundation area, respectively. In conclusion, distribution of the floodplain vegetation is closely related with the flood discharge and frequency in the Cheongmi-cheon Stream.

Analysis of the riparian vegetation expansion in middle size rivers in Korea (중규모 하천에서의 식생 증가 현황에 대한 분석)

  • The expansion of riparian vegetation in middle size rivers in Korea had been analyzed in this study. Seom River with dam, Cheongmi River without dam, and Naesung River with no operating dam in the upstream was investigated for the 1 km to identify the expansion of riparian vegetation through the aerial photograph analysis. As a results, we found that the rate of vegetation area is 54.7% in Seom River, 77.5% in Cheongmi River, and 49.7% in Naesung River. The vegetation area had been increased in 3 rivers, and the expansion rate since 2010 is very high nearly up to 2 times (17 times in Naesung River). Sandbar and open-water area, however, have been decreased in the same rate with the riparian vegetation expansion. It could be concluded that vegetation increase trend is clear in rivers regardless of location and dam existence. Further researches are necessary to find out the causes to establish the countermeasures because the increase of vegetation will change the physical system as well as biological system of river.

Evaluation of Habitat Diversity Changes by Weir Operation of the Sejongbo Weir in Geum River using High-resolution Aerial Photographs (항공사진을 이용한 금강 세종보 수문개방에 따른 서식처 다양도 변화 분석)

  • This study investigated habitat diversity changes by conducting weir operations at the Sejongbo site in the Geum River basin. High-resolution aerial photographs taken before and after the weir-opening operation were used for habitat analyses. We classified water and bar areas into 17 types, such as lotic habitats, including riffles, runs, and glides, and lentic habitats, including reservoirs, pools, bar-head backwaters, and bar ponds. Then, we estimated each habitat area quantitatively, calculated a habitat diversity index, and established a habitat diversity map. Our results indicated that after the weir-opening operation, lotic habitats and new types of shallow lentic habitats increased in the water area. In addition, for the bar area, bare lands without cultivation increased distinctively. Finally, we observed that the habitat diversity index drastically increased after the weir-opening operation, which could provide a relatively simple channel of diverse habitats.

Reevaluation of Clinical Efficacy of Peripheral Vasodilator: Ethaverine HCl (말초혈관(襪梢血管) 확장제(擴張劑) Ethaverine HCl의 임상효과(臨床效果)의 재평가(再評價))

  • The clinical efficacy of Ethaverine, a peripheral vasodilator, was studied according to a double-blind, non-cross over method in 29 diabetic patients with peripheral arterial diseases. The clinical improvement was assessed from the history of patients including the incidence and frequency of intermitten claudication. Ethaverine, after 4 weeks of therapy, was not effective in improving clinical symptoms compared to placebo. Ethaverine, however, was an efective vasodilator than placebo. The quality of vasodilation induced by Ethaverine, was similar to that of alcohol. A new clinical method of studying peripheral vasodilator was presented. The clinical symptoms of peripheral vascular arterial disease in the lower extrimities include reduced intensity of palpable pulses, coldness, and discoloration of the skin. Intermittent claudication may be present. Pathologic changes in vessel architecture precede the symptoms, and recognition of impending vascular insufficiency is a determining factor in selecting vasodilating therapy or surgical management. Also, post-operative patients who have chronic peripheral vascular arterial disease may be candidates for subsequent vasodilating therapy. Peripheral vasodilators, according to the series of reports, may be indicated in vasospastic peripheral vascular condition rather than an occlusive vascular disease and the vessel responds best when a relatively large vascular beds are involved rather than a small, capillary beds. Recently, the clinical efficacy of peripheral vasodilators have been challanged by many clinical investigators and clinicians. In this study, we have re-evaluated the efficacy of Ethaverine HCl as peripheral vasodilator in patients with vasospastic peripheral arterial disease. Ethaverine is claimed to be two to four times as potent a spasmolytic agent as papaverine in a variety of laboratory and clinical work.

A Study on the Establishment and Expanding the Concept of SHIPSONG in Myeonglee (명리학에서 십성(十星)의 성립과 개념 확장에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this paper was to confirm the source of Shipsong called Yookchen or Yooksheen used in Myeongleehak and the meaning of Shipsong in major classics. It is to investigate the concept of Shipsong used in modern Myeongri, and to study in-depth the concept of Shipsong in a more advanced form, not just in family relationships. In reality, the concept of Yookchen was defined and the term Yookchen was first used in Yeonhaejapyeong. Most of the contents of the major classics, such as Yeonhaejapyeong, Sammyeontonghwe, and Japyeonjinjeong, were limited to setting only family concepts. Then, in 1963, Sajoojeongsul was published, which explained both family relations and the action of Shipsong. In particular, it is noteworthy that the scientific reputation written by Ki-seung Kim did not only explain the concept of Shipsong but also opened a new chapter to confirm human psychology and aptitude. In this study, I tried to find out the concept and tendency of Shipsong described in Kim Ki-seung's Science Myeongri in the major classics and how the concept changed. I hope this study will be of some help to the study of Myeongleehak in the future in terms of understanding and utilization of Shipsong.

Occurrence and Variation of Oxygen Deficient Water Mass in the Namdae Stream Estuary, Yangyang, Korea (양양 남대천 하구의 빈산소 수괴 출현과 변동)

  • The occurrence and variation of oxygen deficient water mass (ODW) in Namdae stream estuary, Yangyang were studied. Field observations for water properties and sediment environments were conducted at 5 stations of the estuary from April 2008 to November 2008. The coastal sandbar is developed at the estuary mouth, and there is a pool between the estuary mouth and about 2.3 km upstream of the estuary. The pool is relatively deep and narrow compared to riverbed of the estuary. The ODW was observed continuously in the pool from May to October. The ODW extends vertically up to 2 m depth in August, and maximum length of the ODW were about 2.3 km. Mean concentration of ignition loss (IL) and acid volatile sulfide (AVS) of sediment was 7.5~9.0%, $0.282{\sim}1.106\;mg/g{\cdot}dry$ wt, respectively. Ammonium concentration in the bottom layer during formation period of the halocline and the ODW was 4~23 times higher than that of surface layer. ODW was initiated by the introduction of seawater into bottom of the estuary pool to make a strong halocline, and then decomposition of organic matter within sediment accelerated the formation of the ODW.
