Stable and Easily Parallizable Cloth Animation Method (안정적이고 병렬화가 용이한 옷감 애니메이션 기법)

  • Implicit Integration has become a standard approach to efficient cloth animation, and it guarantees the stability of the system so that large steps can be used. Therefore, it is regarded as the best method for the real-time or interactive animation of cloth. Since the implicit method was introduced for stable cloth animation, various cloth animation techniques based on the method have been proposed. It is now possible to generate the real-time animation of cloth model with thousands of mass-point in general PC environments. Although the implicit method guarantees the stability, the implementation of the implicit method is generally more difficult than that of the explicit method. Even worse, it is very difficult to parallelize the computation process of the implicit method. The cloth animation with implicit method can be formalized as a linear system solving. In this paper we propose an stable and efficient cloth animation techniques based on the implicit method. The proposed method can be easily parallelized. Self-collision is another important issue in cloth animation, we also propose an efficient self-collision avoidance techniques.

Learning Multi-Character Competition in Markov Games (마르코프 게임 학습에 기초한 다수 캐릭터의 경쟁적 상호작용 애니메이션 합성)

  • Animating multiple characters to compete with each other is an important problem in computer games and animation films. However, it remains difficult to simulate strategic competition among characters because of its inherent complex decision process that should be able to cope with often unpredictable behavior of opponents. We adopt a reinforcement learning method in Markov games to action models built from captured motion data. This enables two characters to perform globally optimal counter-strategies with respect to each other. We also extend this method to simulate competition between two teams, each of which can consist of an arbitrary number of characters. We demonstrate the usefulness of our approach through various competitive scenarios, including playing-tag, keeping-distance, and shooting.

  • The biggest purpose of sound is communication with spectator in animation.   • Silhouette Animation has been recognized as a genre of animation since the very beginning of the animation history, and also Its segmental movement and Aesthetic expression has led a variety of semantic interpretations. Especially the French animation director, Michel Ocelot, recently integrated 3-dimensional digital to the silhouettes animation, and it extended the possibility of the silhouettes animation in many aspects. In his latest animation feature, , he showed how he made changes in 3-dimension by creating and evolving his own way and style of silhouette animation. Although mainstream digital animations preferably to show realistic images and motion, Michel Ocelot used very selective movement, subjective digital colors and extended space which couldn't be expressed in the way of creating traditional style of silhouette animation. This alternative slow movement and the unique aesthetics in 3-dimension emphasize the unconscious elements of color, composition, patterns, and it provides digitally enhanced images and pictorial impression. In addition, the acquisition of digital three-dimensional use of space made possible to provides the wider formative imagination to the audience. In this paper, we analyzed aesthetic characteristics of the digital silhouette animation, (2011), specially focusing on the aspects of Movement, Image, Space, which could not be found in the traditional silhouette animation. It is significant to obtain diversity of the future digital animation and its positive development. In addition, this provides opportunity to explore Michel Ocelot's new experiments and animation philosophy.

Cauterizing Effect Animation for Virtual Surgery Medical Simulation (가상 수술 의료 시뮬레이션을 위한 소작 효과 애니메이션 기법)

  • Practice education using virtual medical simulation has been recently introduced to maximize the learning efficiency in clinical environment. Specially, in minimally invasive surgery, the necessity of virtual surgery medical simulation has been substantially increased. Since cauterizing effect occurred frequently in minimally invasive surgery has been represented by simple bleeding, realistic cauterizing effect animation has not been proposed yet. In this paper, we propose realistic real-time cauterizing effect animation. Proposed method changes the individual element of each vertex color of the mesh and uses sigmoid function to impose weights for the smooth color change inside the valid mesh region so that the results of cauterizing effect animation was realistic. In addition, by proposing cauterizing color buffer, overlapped cauterizing effects can be realistically represented. Proposed method greatly improves the sense of the real and absorption in virtual surgery medical simulation so that the education efficiency of doctors and students using medical simulation can be maximized.

  • Magical realism, blooming and improving in Latin America, opened the new vision about reality and rationalism, coming out from the out-styled frame of past. While having common points with unrealistic literature, which uses fantastical components, magical realism is different from Surrealism and fantasy literature that is focusing on reality and realizing reality intensely. In the early stage of this research, magical realism was restricted by the characteristics of literature of Latin America, but the research of magical realism is expanding in planning Post-Modernism nowadays. Lately, the influence of magical realism is identified in literatures, arts, films, and animations over the world; according to the research, however, research about magical realism in animations was not done in Korea before. A Korean independent animation "A coffee vending machine and its sword" was evaluated positively in many international film festivals is valuable as the research of magical realism. Throughout this study, this animation "A coffee vending machine and its sword" was analyzed by its narrative and images. The analysis of narrative consists two parts. One is about the form of narrative and the other is about contents through the story. Analysis of Image is also divided into two parts: background image and character image. In this animation, the protagonist is narrating about the fantastic accidents in his life and his own feelings towards it. The narration leads audience to understand his situation and feelings in meta-fiction. On the surface, audience watches the love story of a normal girl and coffee vending machine in this artwork, but deep inside the animation, it is visible that the directors tried to make audiences think about the life of 880,000-won Generation in Korea. The background image was represented as real places in Seoul including the landmark of Seoul, making mimesis of reality in Korea. The character image has two conflicting aspects with reincarnated warrior, Jinyoungyoung and a coffee vending machine. It is a hybrid-character transmogrifying between two characters. Likewise, "A coffee vending machine and its sword" has the characteristics of Korean magical realism through form, content and image. Through analyzing the Korean independent animation "A coffee vending machine and its sword", this research tried to find a way of using factors of fantasy, of representing reality as a dramatic device and of using magical realism of Korean animation for bond of sympathy with audience.

  • 본 논문은 현실세계를 가능하면 사실적으로 표현하고 색감이나 형체를 실물처럼 느낄 수 있게 애니메이션화 했다. 그 대상은 사이버화석박물관, 패류박물관으로 했으며, VRML로 구성하고 20~40프레임의 2차원 정보를 연속적으로 연동시켜 현실감있게 구현하였다.

  • Rapidly changing 3D rendering technology is expanding its fields of display fast towards Non-Photorealistic Rendering beyond Photorealistic Rendering. It is now attainable to realize conventional 2D visual animated cartoons with 3D animation technology. It is not complex to create two shades of color or more with the rendered outcomes, made by Toon-Shading, of 3D total packaging animation Maya with black outlines brought through the process of 2D animation. It the reality of 3D animation being one of the prevalent mechanisms of animated films, it is valuable for familiarized animated cartoons to be realized by the technology of 3D animation. Thus, I hope to help in many ways create more effective 3D cartoon animation production process by optimized Toon-Shading attributes method and technology in this research.
