A Study on the Perception of Librarianship Professionalism in Korean Public Library (공공도서관 사서직 전문성 인식에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the direction of librarianship by analyzing differences in Librarian and User perceptions of Librarianship Professionalism. Literature research was used to derive the components of librarianship Professionalism and to conduct surveys on librarians and users. As a result, librarians recognized expert knowledge as the most important factor, while users recognized service attitude as the most important factor. Users recognized that librarians have low social recognition due to their lack of enjoyment, enthusiasm, and challenging spirit and their ability to develop and provide services by understanding user needs and the flow of knowledge. On the other hand, librarians did not actively engage in communication or exchange with users due to their lack of expert knowledge.

  • The introduction of information technology into the organizations managing knowledge and information which include libraries has caused some confusion to the identity of libraries and librarianship. The libraries and librarians in the societies whose library development lags behind like ours prefer being called information centers or information specialists to libraries$.$md librarians. This paper traces what has been discussed for the professionals, professionalism of librarians and how librarians, who want to be treated properly in status as professionals, understand the professionalism.

  • 사서직 공무원에 대한 법적 근거는 시간의 변화에 따라 계속되어 왔다. 본 논문은 1996년 교육법전에 근거하여 사서직 공무원의 전문성 및 자격에 대한 제도적 문제점을 분석하고, 사서직 공무원의 직급 및 임용시험에 따른 인사체계의 법적인 모순을 지적한뒤, 사서직 공무원의 전문성과 공무원 신분에 대한 개선방안을 제시함으로써 사서직 공무원의 인사체계에 대한 합리적 운영을 도모하고자 한다.

  • The purpose of this research is to find out the strategies to improve the professionalism of librarianship in Korea. It is generally accepted that the conditions of librarianship as a profession have been formalized but lack in fulfilling the standards required to be recognized as a profession. This research tries to examine the qualifications of and the educational system for librarians. It also traces how the researches in the library and information science and activities of the library association and Professional communities have contributed to the development of librarianship.

A Study on the Perception of Professionalism of the Open Competitive Exam Subjects for Civil Service Librarian (사서공무원 공개채용 시험과목의 직무전문성에 대한 인식 분석 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the appropriateness of the open competitive examination subjects to selecting the personnel with work profession targeted the public official librarian engaging the libraries directly operated by education office and city hall of Seoul. Also, this study suggested the ways for selecting excellent personnel within work profession. First, the public official librarian recognized that there was no practicality regarding the subjects of the open recruitment that recruit for the personnel with work profession. Second, 78.5% of the public official librarian responded the new subjects including science of public administration, social studies, science, and mathematics needed to be revised to a written examination. Third, the public official librarian thought the subjects such as library management theory, organization of information, and collection management was more appropriate for the improvement of the profession.

  • <이 글은 College & Research Libraries 지에 금년 1월호에 실린 Professionalism Reconsidered의 전역이다. 필자인 Dr. Mary Lee Bundy와 Dr. Mary Lee Bundy와 Dr. Paul Wasserman은 School of Library and Information Services, University of Maryland의 교수이다.> 본고에서는 전문직으로서의 사서직 문제를 사서가 갖게 되는 세 가지 기본적인 관계, 즉 고객과의 관계, 소속기관과의 관계 및 전문직단체와의 관계에 입각하여 검토해 보았다. 그래서 사서직이 갖는 성격 중에서 전문성을 인정할만하다고 생각되는 여러 요소를 이미 확립된 전문직들이 갖는 전ㅁ누성의 표준에다 견주어 보았다. 이 비교의 결가 사서직은 아직 전문직의 유형에 속하기에는 먼 거리를 유지하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 사서직이 전문직으로 발전하려면 사서가 현재 행하고 있는 봉사의 성격과 사서를 얽어메고 있는 여러 가지 관료적인 관계에 대한 변화가 와야 한다. 본고에서는 도한 전문직단체와 도서관학교가 사서직의 전문화과정에 끼친 공헌도를 분석해 보았다. 이 분야의 발전도는 사서직이 참다운 전문직의 칭호를 마침내 얻을 수 있을 것이냐 그렇지 못할 것이냐의 관건이 된다.

  • The purpose of this article is to discuss on the professionalism of librarianship in Korea. The discussion begins with exploring the conditions which are required for an occupation to be recognized as a profession. The theoretical foundations for discussion is borrowed from 'Theory of Profession' in Sociology. In turn, systematically verified are both public image and librarians' self-confession on librarianship. The weakness and shortcomings of librarianship as a profession are also investigated. Finally suggested we both strategies and methods for the librarianship in Korea to be professionalized.

Worries and Solution to Japanese Librarians' Professionalism (일본의 도서관인의 전문성에 대한 고민과 그 해답)

  • In recent years, the worries of professionalism of the professions have been long lasting and the debate of securing the expertise by improving the curriculum and qualification system as well. In this study, we have focused on cases where Japanese' securing the expertise of profession through practicing specific and systematic movement by reorganizing the curriculum and implicating an expertise evaluation system. First, we analyzed the relevant qualifications for librarians and education system of Japan. Second, we organize the requirements of the Library and the studies of Library and Information Science (LIS) in Japan to secure expertise. Third, based on the requirements of the site and the results, we have discussed the advantages and disadvantages by focusing on recent changes in the curriculums and expertise evaluation system.

A Study on Professionalism of Librarianship in Public Libraries: The Case of Humanities Lectures at the Dongdaemun-Gu Public Digital Library (공공도서관 사서직의 전문성에 관한 연구 - 동대문구정보화도서관의 인문학 강좌를 중심으로 -)

  • As the role and functions of public libraries have become more diverse and complex, professionalism of librarianship in public libraries is more emphasized than before. Meanwhile, the importance of humanities has been highlighted and as a result, humanities lectures are diffused along with the social change and advancement; something that most public libraries take into consideration. In that, this study look into the case of the Dongdaemun-Gu Public Digital Library with emphasis on 2013 and 2014 when the library tried to develop professionalism of librarianship in relation to lectures on humanities. And, based upon the analysis on the process of the program and survey results, this study intends to examine the relationship between professionalism of librarianship in public libraries and humanities lectures for public in oder to enhance our understanding on professionalism of librarianship in public libraries.
