  • Korean medicinal herbs -sasam, gilkyung, jakyak, danggwi, hwangki and chunkung were soaked to the distillate of Korean rice wine for 75 days. The alcohol concentration of distillate, soaking media was adjusted to 45, 35, and 25% respectively with distilled water. Changes in alcohol concentration, pH, optical density, concentration of peoniflorin and decursin were analyzed. Quality of the final product was determined by sensory evaluation. Alcohol concentration was rapidly decreased but pH increased in 15 days and thereafter they showed slow decrease. Decrease of alcohol concentration was affected by the kind of herb and alcohol concentration of soaking media. The strongest effect was observed from danggwi and low alcohol concentration. Concentration of paeoniflorin and decursin, an index component of jakyak and danggwi respectively, showed the similar trend of decrease after increase to maximum concentration. From the sensory evaluation, the best overall quality was obtained from liquors made from 45% alcohol concentration. The quality was decreased in the order of sasam, jakyak, chunkung and hwanggi.

  • This study was carried out to identify the protein patterns and to estimate molecular weights of the ginseng and other plants. Polyacrylamide gradient 2-30% gels for identification of protein patterns and 11% SDS polyacrylamide gels for molecular weight estimation of various plants were used. Proteins extracted with distilled water and phosphate buffer were most clearly separated. Although minor bands were a little different according to kinds of buffer, major bands showed similar pattern. Major protein bands were two bands of 45,000, 66,000 in Panax ginseng, 3 bands of 32,000-39,000 in Codonopsis lanceolata and one double band around 39,000 kd in Platycodon grandiflorum.

  • Objectives: This study was carried out to investigate 1he effects of Sasammaickmoondong-tang(SME) on colonic mucosal lesions induced by indomethacin in mouse. Methods: The normal group is 1hat no inflammation elicitated mouse. Control group is that gastro-inflammation elicitated mouse. Sample group is that SME administered mouse after gastro-inflammation elicitation. Results: In the common morphology and histochemical change, control group was observed various injury-mucous surface cell, micro-villi, paneth cell, surface epithelial cell, goblet cell-by hemorrhagic erosion, while sample group was as same as normal group. In the immunohistochemical change, 1he distributions of COX-1, Bcl-2, and BrdU treated with SME noticeably increased than control group(P<0.05). The distributions of TUNEL, $NF-{\kappa}B$, COX-2, $IL-2R-\alpha$, NK-1.1, ICAM-1, and CD11b/18 treated with SME noticeably decreased than control group(P<0.05). And the distribution of SBA was as same as normal group. Conclusions: According to the above results, it is supposed that Sasammaickmoondong-tang is applicable to colonic mucosal lesions.

  • Proximate compositions of the roots of cultured and wild Codonopsis lanceolata were examined as tile basic reasearch for the study of their source of processed foods. No significant difference in the contents was found between the wild root and thecultivated at 3$0^{\circ}C$ in biotronroom. In view of the results to have measured mineralswhich is included in 14 sorts of Codonopsis lanceolata and surveyed their distribution.12 kinds of minerals including T1, Co, Ge, Sm, Mo, Sc, Be, Cd, As, Ga, Bi, ph are ne-vel or little included in almost source. Other twenty-one sorts of minerals (Ni, Se,Ba, Sb, Si, Ti, B, Li, Ifs, Ca, Sr, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, p, Al, Na, V, Cr, K) are more or less in-cluded in all source and Ca, Mg, p, K, and Fe are metals that are included in large qu-entities in comparison with others. No minerals difference in the contents was foundbetween the cultivated temperature. The content of elements of inorganic metal differsaccording to the part of C. lanceolata.

  • Objectives : A morphological classification among Adenophora triphylla var. japonica, Codonopsis lanceolata, Adenophora remotiflora and Codonopsis pilosula was made through microscopic observation. Method : The slice of the tested material made by paraffin section technique was colored with Safranine Malachite Green contrast methods, and then observed and photographed by olymphus-BHT. Result : 1. Codonopsis pilosula is like a long cone, with amole-like projected parts at the beginning of the roots. 2. Adenophora triphylla var. japonica, Codonopsis lanceolata, Adenophora remotiflora, and Codonopsis pilosula are all similar as following: 1) Cork layers are composed of a few to over 10 subsidiary cells, with individual or a group of stone cells among them. 2) Phloem is wide and has a milk tube. Conclusion : Adenophora triphylla var. japonica, Codonopsis lanceolata, Adenophora remotiflora, and Codonopsis pilosula are all similar and difficult to be distinguished through microscopic observation, so that chemical experiments should be conducted for their identification.

  • Inhibitory activities of 58 methanol extracts, which were prepared from different parts of 55 kinds of edible and medicinal plants, against human thrombin were evaluated. Analysis of the anti-coagulation activity determined by thrombin time enabled us to select 8 herb extracts as possible sources of anti-thrombosis agent. Further analysis of anti-thrombosis activity determined by activated partial thromboplastin time and fibrinolytic activity, and heat stability and inhibition against other proteolytic digestive enzymes provided new information that Pimpinella brachycarpa, Lysimachia clethroides, and Salix gracilistyla could be used as a potential anti-thrombosis agent. Our results suggest that edible and medicinal plants could be the potential source of thrombin inhibitor.

  • This study is to establish the quality control method of Adenophorae Radix. (6R,7R)-E,E-tetradeca-4,12-diene-8,10-diyne-1,6,7-triol (1) isolated from this plant was adequate as an analytical marker. Content of 1 in Adenophorae Radix was $0.006\;{\pm}\;0.003%$ (n = 43). In addition, total ash content was $6.5\;{\pm}\;4.0%$, and loss on drying was $12.1\;{\pm}\;2.1%$.
