Three-dimensional laser scanner was used to accurately measure any possible strain on a slope under pertaining stress with the time difference of 7 months. The laser scanner has the ability to measure the 3-D coordinate of a target point by calculating the travel time of laser beam between the laser device and the target point, and has been proved to be effective for analysis of the displacement of slopes or large construction. The scanning data measured with time difference were analyzed to find any strain by approaches of plane angle change, curvature variation, twist of frame, displacement of merging point, etc. From the analysis, some weak points showing heavily distorted shape were detected, which was used to design the reinforcement.
Deformation of a slope at a coal waste depot and the natural slope under the depot was surveyed and investigated at Dogye village in Samcheock city, Gangwon Province. To investigate the behaviors of the slopes, wire sensors and a rain gauge were installed on the crest of the waste depot slope and inclinometers were installed in the natural slope. The results of deformation monitoring at the crest of the waste depot slope using wire sensors revealed increased deformation with increasing cumulative rainfall. The results of monitoring horizontal deformation of the natural slope revealed that maximum horizontal deformation was also affected by cumulative precipitation. However, the groundwater level at the natural slope showed no change with rainfall. These measurements confirm that deformation at coal mine waste depots is closely related to precipitation, indicating that self-loading at such depots increases with rainfall infiltration, thus causing deformation of the waste depot slope. In addition, increasing the self-load of the coal mine waste depot may cause deformation of the underlying natural slope.
Many researches on disaster prevention using computer simulation methods can be performed to minimize the damage of property and to protect human life. Discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA) is a new computer simulation method to analyze the behavior of discontinuous rock masses. Since most rock slope problems are 3-dimensional in nature, 2-dimensional deformation analysis has limited application. In this study, the basic principles of 3-dimensional discontinuous deformation analysis are described. The newly developed 3-dimensional discontinuous deformation analysis method is proposed as the computer simulation method for discontinuous rock masses. Then, the failure behavior of rock slopes are simulated using 3-dimensional discontinuous deformation analysis. The simulation results are compared and examined with the failure behavior at the rock slopes. The results show the applicability of 3-dimensional discontinuous deformation analysis to analyze the deformation and failure mechanisms of rock slopes.

Heaving of road and subsidence of slope took place at the Wiri region of the local highway 999 in Gyeongsangbukdo, Korea after heavy rain in the next year of construction. Although the state government had performed remedial treatments by reducing the angle and the height of the slope, deformation had never stopped. Therefore, we have preformed the analysis of deformation and stabilityof the slope. Study area consists of the Cretaceous shale, siltstone and sandstone and two faults are found. The major deformation occurred by sliding of rock mass along faults after heavy rain because not only thepore pressure at the fault plane and the unit weight of sliding mass increased, but did the shearstrength of saturated fault clay become very low. The decrease in shear strength of saturated fault clayis the major factor among the reasons for deformation. Numerical simulations using limit equilibriummodel, finite difference model and finite element model were performed for eight cross sections.Although safety factors are above 1.7 during the dry season, they become below 1.0 when groundwaterlevel raises to surface. The maximum displacement is about 15-3Ocm. However, safety factors increasedto above 2.4 and the maximum displacement is below 2.08cm after remedial treatment, Indicating thatthe slope becomes stable.

This research addresses the experimental application of the digital close-range photogrammetric technique for 3D deformation measurement and visualization of road slope. The 3D displacements were extracted by the photo-triangulation based on the bundle adjustment method using the digital imagery. In addition, we produced the digital elevation models, the digital orthorectified images and the 3D perspective view images of the slope employing a digital photogrammetric workstation. Also the inclination map of the slope was generated as the data for monitoring and managing dangerous slopes.
This study is to consider applicability of spiral bolt strain gauge as an instrument measuring behavior of soft ground foundation and rock slope. When the instrument was installed on the ground, it can be useful to identify the state of ground behavior because it has the characteristics of flexibility, as well as to apply the ground reinforcement because it has higher pull-out resistance to the ground. From the measurement of behavior to soft ground foundation, the strain shows a stable state in the beginning, then was observed significant change in the upper and the middle of spiral bolt strain gauge after 400 days. This is analyzed that ground loosening, which is due to occurred frequent earthquake of magnitude 1~2 with increased rainfall, lead to the instability of the ground. From the measurement of behavior to rock slope, the strain shows a stable state with very little change in a period of 0~50 days and the biggest strain at 4.2 m (P6) in a period of 50~100 days, then other places except P6 was maintained at a stable state in a period of 100~160 days. The reason is analyzed because that blasting for excavated limestone surrounding was affected to the largest at P6. However, based on the size of strain change by behavior of the soft ground foundation and rock slope, it is considered that the present condition are not effected on stability of retaining structure and rock slope. In conclusion, the proposed spiral bolt strain gauge can be useful to measure behavior of soft ground foundation and rock slope, and also to be measured behavior as well as reinforcement of the target ground.
In this study, the centrifugal tests were performed with varying the angle of slope such as 1:3, 1:2.5, and 1:2 in order to analyze the deformation and failure type of dredged clay slope for a short term. The displacement mode, displacement vector and the variation of pore pressure with the different slope angle were measured. As a results, even though the displacement in the slope after 4 months were developed in the case of 1:3 for the dredged slope, there are little problems to obtain the stability of dredged slope because the original construction section maintains. Also, in the case of 1:2.5 after 4 months the local slope failure occurred and in the case of 1:2 after 2 months the circle failure starting from the point of the tensile crack occurred. After reviewing the results, the maximum vertical displacement occurred at the crest of slope and maximum horizontal displacement was about double of maximum vertical displacement.
