  • This study was carried out to evaluate environmental and ecological characteristics of natural habitat for cultivation of Epimedium koreanum. Habitat of E. koreanum was the slope foot of mountain descending gradually toward mostly northwest from top of mountain with slope of $2{\sim}20%$ and the altitude ranged from 60 to 400m above the sea level. Some physiochemical characteristics of habitat soil were as follows: pH, $4.1{\sim}5.8$, organic matters content, $4.9{\sim}6.6%$ and cation exchange capacity, $14.8{\sim}34.3\;me/100g$ soil, respectively. Habitats were shaded by deciduous broad-leaved tree mainly, and compared with those of naked area, relative photon flux density was $3.5{\sim}13.1%$ and relative luminance was $3.3{\sim}11.9%$ due to shading. Air temperature of habitat under shade was $4.3{\sim}6.5^{\circ}C$ lower than that of naked area. Habitat soil temperature was lower than that of naked area but temperature range was smaller than that of naked area. E. koreanum plants were growing with semishading plants under shade of tree leaf. From investigation of natural characteristics of habitat, it was concluded that E. koreanum plant would grow at place with a little change in temperature and moisture of soil which was caused by shading and mulching with litterfall of broad-leaved tree.

  • With the aim of restoring slow-moving landslide areas, this study collected fundamental data from tree-ring analysis of curved trees in these areas. We collected both upper and lower stem disks to measure the azimuth angles of six trees with growth curvature caused by tension cracks. Additionally, we analyzed various factors in the slow moving landslide area. The geological strata and main constitutive rocks in the study area were anorthosite-formed in the Precambrian period; moreover, there were no intrusive rocks, other geological strata, geological folds, or faults. The talus with weathered rocks was distributed in the upper zone of the slow-moving landslide area. According to annual-ring analysis of curved trees and terrain analysis by satellite imagery, slow-moving landslide occurred from the top to the bottom end of the slope between 1999 and 2011. There was a significant relationship (P < 0.01) between the azimuth angle of cracks caused by the slow-moving landslide and the angle of the curved trees. These results suggest that the occurrence of slow-moving landslides could be confirmed through analysis of annual-rings of curved trees, underground water levels, and terrain (by satellite imagery).

  • In this study, 18 plots were selected for particular investigation on Gangneung area and Samcheok area and Uljin area, where forest fire was occurred after thinning in 2007. After selection, a relationship between a damage of forest fire and thinning were compared and analyzed. Many factor such as a damaged species, a thinning or non-thinning, a direction of forest fire head, DBH, a height of tree, a mortality of tree, a leeward scorching ratio, a crown damage ratio, a forest tree standing crop density, a crown base height, a leaving of thinning slash, a location of plot (GPS), elevation, an aspect of slope, an angle of slope, and a topography were measured. Therefore, we analyzed a relationship with forest fire. In the result of this analysis, it was founded that the leeward scorching ratio was 24.7% on thinning area whereas 60.2% on non-thinning area. Subsequently, leeward scorching ratio on thinning area was increased by about 35.5% more than on non-thinning area. In the result of analysis about tree species, a forest of pine tree was more damaged than forest of oak tree. The mortality of tree was increased by about 41.4% on non-thinning area. When stands were close to thinning slashes, these were more damaged by 10${\sim}$20% than other stands for increasing of amount of a combustion material. Especially, as potential of re-ignition increased for more cumulated thinning slash, it will be more important to require a method for a periodical removing or practical utilization of slash.

  • Purpose: This study is aimed to assess changes of stress distribution dependent on different connection lengths and placement of the fixture top relative to the ridge crest. Materials and methods: The internal-conical connection implant which has a hexagonal anti-rotation index was used for FEM analysis on stress distribution in accordance with connection length of fixture-abutment. Different connection lengths of 2.5 mm, 3.5 mm, and 4.5 mm were designed respectively with the top of the fixture flush with residual ridge crest level, or 2 mm above. Therefore, a total of 6 models were made for the FEM analysis. The load was 170 N and 30-degree tilted. Results: In all cases, the maximum von Mises stress was located adjacent to the top portion of the fixture and ridge crest in the bone. The longer the connection length was, the lower the maximum von Mises stress was in the fixture, abutment, screw and bone. The reduction rate of the maximum von Mises stress depending on increased connection length was greater in the case of the fixture top at 2 mm above the ridge crest versus flush with the ridge crest. Conclusion: It was found that the longer the connection length, the lower the maximum von Mises stress appears. Furthermore, it will help prevent mechanical or biological complications of implants.

  • Compared to aerial photogrammetry, UAV photogrammetry has advantages in acquiring and utilizing high-resolution images more quickly. The production of 3D models using UAV photogrammetry has become an important issue at a time when the applications of 3D spatial information are proliferating. Therefore, this study assessed the feasibility of utilizing 3D models produced by UAV photogrammetry through quantitative and qualitative analyses. The qualitative analysis was performed in accordance with the LODs (Level of Details) specified in the 3D Land Spatial Information Construction Regulation. The results showed that the features on planes have a high LoD while features with elevation differences have a low LoD due to the occlusion area and parallax. Quantitative analysis was performed using the 3D coordinates obtained from the CPs (Checkpoints) and edges of nearby structures. The mean errors for residuals at CPs were 0.042 m to 0.059 m in the horizontal and 0.050 m to 0.161 m in the vertical coordinates while the mean errors in the structure's edges were 0.068 m and 0.071 m in horizontal and vertical coordinates, respectively. Therefore, this study confirmed the potential of 3D models from UAV photogrammetry for analyzing the digital twin and slope as well as BIM (Building Information Modeling).

  • The natural regeneration pattern was evaluated for 11 useful hardwood species in the natural deciduous forest where three different silvicultural practices (two-storied system, shelterwood system, and selection system) were applied and passed by three growing seasons. The study forest was presently dominated by Quercus mongolica in the upper canopy. However, since the analysis indicated that the number of regenerated seedlings of Acer mono and Fraxinus rhynchophylla was fairly abundant enough, these two species were anticipated to have the possibility to be among dominant species along with Quercus mongolica. The results of seedling occurrence after regenerating cutting showed that the number of seedlings was estimated for 3,145/ha(10 times of overstory) in the two-storied system, 6,885/ha(9 times of overstory) in the shelterwood system, and 2,275/ha(4 times of overstory) in the selection system. The estimation was varied by species, and the number of stump sprout was more abundant. The proportion of seedlings was high in 60~80% of overstory density and 60~70% of understory coverage, and high in the site of less than $25^{\circ}$ of slope and from southwest to northwest of aspect. These results were still varied by species. Stump diameter and height had little influence on the occurrence of sprout.

  • This study was conducted to analyze the relationships between distributions of major hardwood species and characteristics of topography in natural hardwood forest at Mt. Joongwang, Pyongchang-gun, Gangwon-do which belongs to mid-northern part of the temperate forest. Acer pictum var. mono, Acer manshuricum and Quercus mongolica were affected by elevation, while Ulmus davidiana var. japonica and Fraxinus rhynchophylla were affected by the change of slope. Importance values of A. pictum, Betula costata, Ulmus laciniata and Cornus controversa in valley were 13.41%, 5.68% and 3.29%, respectively, which were higher than in any other topography. Species diversity of valley was the highest with 0.98. Ratio of A. pictum and Q. mongolica in dominant species were 24% and 14%, respectively in valley, while were 19% and 23% in slop. Q. mongolica ratio in ridgeline was higher than any other species. Importance values of A. pictum increased continuously until elevation 1,200 m. importance values of F. rhynchophylla was 6.6% which was the highest value found on elevation 800 m. Distributions of major hardwood species were different according to the elevation. The ratio of Q. mongolica and A. pictum were 6.4%~17.5% and 6.0%~10.7% respectively, which were the highest ratio. Species diversity increased according to the increase of the elevation.

  • In order to reveal formation factors and developmental processes of tafoni this study was conducted with petrological analysis including microscopic observation, measurement of water content and water analysis at Golgulsa temple in Gyeongju, South Korea. The direction of the entrance to tafoni at Golgulsa temple tends to coincide with the direction of slope, and this is thought to be related to the direction of wind flow and water supply. Tafoni's initial developmental processes is judged to have grown as a result of a breakaway of rock fragments along with beddings and cracks in rock. Then, tafoni have been enlarged along at the spots that sufficiently accommodate water supply depending on the direction of wind. The results of water analysis of the stagnant water in gnamma implies that a high meltage of Na and Cl compared to other inland areas can be from the adjacent shore. The effects of such saline substances on rock weathering and development of taponi are currently under way through electronic microscopy and geochemical analysis.

  • The Cu-Pb-Zn-Ag hydrothermal vein type deposits which comprise the Dongil and Dong-cheogogsan mines occur within the Cretaceous sedimentary rocks in the Euiseong Basin of the southern Korean peninsula. The ore mineralization is contained within three stage(I,II and III) quartz and calcite veins. Ore minerals occur as dominant chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, tetrahedrite and Pb, Ag, Sb and Bi-bearing sulfosalts. Stage I ore minerals were deposited between $400^{\circ}C$ and $200^{\circ}C$ from the fluid with moderate salinities(7.0 to 4.5 eq. wt. % NaCl). Evidence of boiling suggests pressure of less than 150 bars during stage I mineralization. This pressure corresponds to maximum depths of 650 m and 1700 m, respectively, assuming lithostatic and hydrostatic loads. The data on mineralogy, temperature and salinity, together with information on the solubility of Cu complex, suggest that Cu deposition is a result of boiling coupled with declining temperature from $350^{\circ}$ to $250^{\circ}C$ or declining log $a_{o_2}$(from -29.8 to -35.9 atm.)and increasing in pH. Pb, Ag, Sb and Bi-bearing sulfosalts were deposited by cooling and dilution at temperature of less than $250^{\circ}C$ from the ore fluid with less than -35.9 atm. of log $a_{o_2}$.
