This study was conducted to obtain basic data for deriving the appropriate application amount of insecticide for effective pest control. We have investigated the correlation among the application amount of insecticide, the adhesion amount of active ingredient and the pest control effect. The linear standard curve of acetamiprid was $R^2=0.9994$, and the scope of the recovery factor was between 71% and 93% with less than 6% of the coefficient of variation. During the test conducted in 2015, the application amount was reduced to 302 L/10a which was 70 L less than the previous year and the spraying pressure was reduced as well. After analyzing the adhesion amount of active ingredient, it was found that a correlation coefficient of adhesion amount of the active ingredients became lower from 82% to 69%, that indicated insecticide liquid was evenly distributed compared to 2014. Also more than 95% of control effect was displayed, thereby indicating that there is a close relation with the correlation coefficient of the adhesion amount of active ingredient. It also presented that the adhesion amount of active ingredient on the ground was 2.2 times more than that on the leaves of apple trees.
To investigate the bird's dieting behavior for several fruits in orchards, this study was carried out in 2008. Black-billed magpies (Pica pica), azure-winged magpies (Cyanopica cyanus), and brown-eared bulbuls (Hypsipetes amaurotis) made their unique marks on the surface of pear and apple fruits; black-billed magpies pecked fruits strongly and left round holes with perpendicular angle, whereas those of azure-winged magpies and brown-eared bulbuls were sack-shaped with narrow neck and marked unique stripes on the skin. For the fruits of pear and apple from bagging practices, the birds showed different foraging behavior; black-billed magpies could injure all kinds of fruits whether with paper bags or not, but azure-winged magpies and brown-eared bulbuls could not attack the fruits with paper bag. Azure-winged magpies and brown-eared bulbuls preferred pear fruits to those of apples and satsuma mandarins in the cage trials. To reduce the injuries by azure-winged magpies and brown-eared bulbuls on pear and apple fruit, wrapping bag should not be impaired. Introducing azure-winged magpies to Cheju should be prohibited for the potential citrus injury by them.

In the present study, we assessed the effecs of fruit and vegetable bark resources rich in beneficial substances on the learning ability and memory improvement. It functions to inhibit the activity of acetylcholinesterase in brain tissue and improve cognitive functions in a simulation model of cognitive impairment induced by scopolamine. Hence, it can promote memory and learning ability. The formulation of the fruit and vegetable bark uses the extract of fruit and vegetable peels, which has long been used without causing toxicity in a wide range of food applications. Therefore, it can be used safely without a risk of side effects, even in the case of a long-term administration for the preventive purpose. Furthermore, the present study is a very beneficial study in the environment-friendly aspect in association with recycling of resources as it is based on the novel efficacies of fruit and vegetable barks which have been conventionally disposed as a refuse of fruits due to their poor sensory qualities despite the content of beneficial substances.
For enhancement of apple productivity, the calcium fertilizers to increase the calcium content of fruit, and reduce the incidence of bitter pit in apples are applied. Crushed oyster shell contains a plenty of calcium carbonate, and a very small amount of boron, ferrous, and manganese. A field study was conducted to determine the optimum level of crushed oyster shell for soil nutrient management, and its effect on the induction of bitter pit in cultivar 'Gamhong' apple. The application of crushed oyster shell increased organic matter, available phosphate, and exchangeable cation concentration in soil. We found a significant positive correlation between soil pH, and application level of crushed oyster shell in both top, and subsoils. The incidence of bitter pit in apple fruit at the harvest stage was significantly higher in non treatment and calciummagnesium carbonate treatment than on over applications 4 Mg $ha^{-1}$ for crushed oyster shell. However, the optimum level of crushed oyster shell was 2 Mg $ha^{-1}$, especially considering the soil Ca content, soil pH, fruits weight, and yield. Our results show that the crushed oyster shell can be effective in restoring the soil nutrient balance, and inducing the bitter pit in apple fruit.

Currently, clearwing moths and peach fruit moths are considered economically important pests of jujube in Boeun, Chungbuk, Korea. However, until now, specific studies on occurrence of the major pests of jujube in Boeun area, which could be useful for pest control, have not been carried out. In this study, seasonal occurrence of three pest moths (Synanthedon bicingulata, S. haitangvora, and Carposina sasakii) in jujube orchards was monitored using sex pheromone traps. Synanthedon bicingulata and S. haitangvora were monitored from 2013 to 2015. Adults of both species were captured from May to October, with two peaks in their occurrence: mid-June and mid-September for S. bicingulata, and mid- to late-June and mid- to late-September for S. haitangvora. However, S. haitangvora occurred in lower numbers than S. bicingulata. Adults of C. sasakii were captured from 2014 to 2016. From May to October, two peaks were observed in their occurrence in mid-June and in late-August to mid-September and the second peak was lower than the first. Thus, the life histories of these pest moths of jujube should be studied in detail for an effective pest control.

The congener and sympatric species, Grapholita molesta (Busck) and G. dimorpha Komai, are economically important pests against various Rosaceae fruit trees in Korea. In this study, we identified the species from the larvae of these two insects collected from damaged fruits of peach, plum, apple, pear, and quince by using a molecular diagnostic method and compared the distribution ratios of the two species within the fruits of each of these trees. Most (99.7%) of the larvae collected from peach fruits were identified as G. molesta, while all of the larvae found in plum fruits were G. dimorpha. Both species were found in the other three fruits, but G. molesta was significantly dominant in pear fruits. G. dimorpha was more abundant in apple and quince fruits, without any significant difference between the distribution ratios of two insects. The results suggest that development of further realistic strategies is necessary for the management of these two pests in Korean orchards.

This research was performed to breed new columnar-typed apple variety for pollinator in apple orchard. We cross-fertilized 'Hongro' that was an ovary parent and 'Maypole' a pollen parent in 2003. We gathered seeds in 2003 and sowed after breaking of dormancy in 2004. Seedlings was been growth and development till flowering. After fruit setting, We investigated characteristics of growth and fruit including mating compatibility from 2010 to 2012, then finally selected '03-2-95' named 'Tinkerbell' in 2012, registered as new variety on Korea Seed & Variety Service in 2015. The full bloom stage of 'Tinkerbell' was later 2 days then of 'Maypole'. Tree habit of 'Tinkerbell' was alike to of 'Maypole', for example weak tree vigor, columnar type. But there were many different characteristics between 'Tinkerbell' and 'Maypole'. Fruit shape of 'Tinkerbell' was ovoid whereas of 'Maypole' was ellipsoid. Fruit of 'Tinkerbell' was bigger, smoother skin, no waxy bloom than of 'Maypole'. Fruit of 'Tinkerbell' was more delicious than of 'Maypole' because of having higher soluble sugar content and lower titratable acidity. 'Tinkerbell' was excellent pollinator in apple orchard. Because of having high fruit setting rate with major apple varieties and a narrow tree width that was advantageous as pollinator in apple high density system.

Proper tree vigor and crop load were determined for 'Fuji'/M.9 apple trees in high density planting system from 2001 to 2003. Leaf/fruit ratio was highly correlated to mean fruit weight (y=1.715x+205.02, $R^2=0.66^{**}$) and yield (y=-35.l56x+5963.7, $R^2=0.44^{**}$). In addition, there was a significant correlation between the number of leaves per tree and mean fruit weight. However, crop load did not affect tree growth, soluble solids content of fruit, and Hunter a value. To harvest the fruits heavier than 300 g without biennial bearing, it was appropriate to crop 55 to 64 fruits in a tree with 55 leaves per fruit of adult tree. The good indices for proper tree vigor could be 20 to 25 cm of mean shoot length and above 95% of shoot termination rate. Moreover, no secondary growth and 20 to 30% of spur formation could be the indices for highly productive tree vigor.

Possible application of hurdle technology extention of shelf-life of fresh-cut apples was investigated by evaluating various hurdle factors known to be effective microbial growth inhibitors and their synergistic effects. Fresh-cut apples treated with chitooligosaccharide or grapefruit seed extract (GSE) showed higher microbial counts than those treated with distilled water during latter half of storage period, and at high concentrations. Citric and malic acids showed similar results, although microbial counts of fresh-cut apples treated with 0.75% or higher concentration of citric acid increased at 4 days of storage at $18^{\circ}C$, indicating malic acid is more effective than all hurdles tested for controlling microbial growth. Using ascorbic acid and calcium chloride as additional hurdles to control browning and softening, minimum and maximum compositions of dipping solution were: 0.25 : 0.5 : 0.25% and 0.75 : 1.0 : 0.75% malic acid: ascorbic acid: calcium chloride, respectively.

In this paper, the relationship between RGB, HSV, La*b* colors and sugar content was analyzed using linear regression on apples harvested in the same region. First, as a result of examining the correlation coefficient with sugar content according to each color level, it was found that the (+) region having a positive coefficient and a (-) region having a negative coefficient were separated according to the color level. Also, the correlation coefficient between color and sugar content, represented by the average value, was 0.342 in the La*b* color space, which was higher than the coefficient in the RGB and hsv space. That is, this means that the sugar content is related to the color in the La*b* space. Also, in the complex color composed of regions with high sugar content, it was found to be R2=0.3627, indicating that it is related to sugar content. In all nine color spaces, it was found to be R2=0.3668. In this case, it was found that the coefficients of v and b* had an effect on the sugar content. Due to this, it was possible to confirm the validity of the empirical prediction that the higher the b* representing yellow, the higher the sugar content.
