  • Ultrasonic inspection method is more profitable than X-ray radiographic inspection in cost and effect of defect detection such as dis-bond, damage, and it does'nt need special constructions and can be possible real time inspection with safety. This report explains the experiment and analysis of ultrasonic property of solid propellant and the inspection methods of propellant/liner dis-bond by inside or outside inspection, and of propellnat micro crack by damage. At result, ultrasonics has big attenuation$(6\sim8db/cm)$ in solid propellant, and it. can be possiblle to detect the defect of propellant/liner dis-bond by inside or outside inspection. And also it can be possible to detect the propellant micro crack caused by damage by using ultrasonic attenuation.

  • Ultrasonic testing are far superior to other nondestructive tests for detecting the disbond interface which occurred in adhesive interface. However, a solid rocket motor consisting of a steel case, rubber insulation, liner, and propellant poses many difficulties for analyzing ultrasonic waves because of the superposition of reflected waves and large differences in acoustic impedance of various materials. Therefore, ultrasonic tests for detecting the disbond interface in solid rocket motor have been applied in very limited areas between the steel case and rubber insulation using an automatic C-scan system. The existing ultrasonic test cannot detect the disbond interface between the liner and propellant of a solid rocket motor because most of the ultrasonic waves are absorbed in the rubber material which has low acoustic impedance. This problem could be overcome by analyzing the resonance frequency from the frequency spectrum using the ultrasonic resonance method. In this paper, a new technique to detect the disbond interface between the liner and propellant using ultrasonic resonance characteristics is discussed in detail.

  • Reliability of welded structures in power plant facilities is very important, and their reliability evaluation requires exact materials properties. But, the conventional PQR (Procedure Qualification Record) can hardly reflect the real material properties in the field because the test is only done on specimens with simulated welding. Therefore, a continuous indentation technique is proposed in this study for simple and non-destructive testing of in-field structures. This test measures the indentation load-depth curve during indentation and analyzes the mechanical properties such as the yield strength, tensile strength and work hardening index. This technique has been applied to evaluate the tensile properties of the weldment in the main steam pipe and hot reheater pipe in power plants under construction and in operation.

  • In boiler high-temperature pipelines such as main steam pipe, header and steam drum in fossil power plants, conventional measurement techniques(replica method, electric resistance method, and hardness test method) for measuring creep damage have such disadvantages as complex preparation and measurement procedures, too many control parameters. And also, these techniques have low practicality and applied only to component surfaces with good accessibility. It needs to apply a reliable and quantitative ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation method that can be replaced for these equipment. In this study, both artificial creep degradation test using life prediction formula and frequency analysis by ultrasonic tests for crept specimens were carried out for the purpose of nondestructive evaluation for creep damage. As a result of ultrasonic tests for crept specimens, we conformed that the high frequency side spectra decrease and central frequency components shift to low frequency band, and also their bandwidth decreases as increasing creep damage in backwall echos.

  • In this paper, the result of an ultrasonic performance demonstration are analyzed. The requirements for an ultrasonic performance demonstration (PD) for a nuclear power plant were first described in ASME B&P Code Section XI, Appendix VIII (1989 winter addenda). In order to establish the performance demonstration scheme in Korean nuclear power plants, the Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. Ltd (KHNP) has developed the Korean Performance Demonstration (KPD) system for the for the ultrasonic examination of nuclear power plants. An analysis of the ultrasonic performance demonstration results from 2004 through 2013 will improve the detection of flaws in an ultrasonic examination, as well as the further development of the KPD training system.

  • The nuclear power plants have been safely operated by plugging the steam generator tubes which have the crack indications. Tube rupture events can occur if analysts fail to detect crack indications during in-service inspection. There are various types of crack indication in steam generator tubes and they have been detected by the eddy current test. The integrity assessment should be performed using the crack-sizing results from eddy current data when the crack indication is detected. However, it is not easy to evaluate the crack-depth precisely and consistently due to the complexity of the methods. The current crack-sizing methods were reviewed in this paper and the suitable ones were selected through the laboratory tests. The retired steam generators of Kori Unit 1 were used for this study. The round robin tests by the domestic qualified analysts were carried out and the statistical models were introduced to establish the appropriate depth-sizing techniques. It is expected that the proposed techniques in this study can be utilized in the Steam Generator Management Program.

  • Pump car is an equipment that transports concrete products as needed to the place where they are poured. In order to pour a large amount of concrete in a short period of time, using a pump car is the most efficient in terms of economic efficiency and quality control. However, recently, many casualties have occurred due to boom damage during concrete pouring, so this study suggests that improvements are needed in the equipment manufacturing stage, inspection standards for old equipment, and equipment rental system. The reason is that, as a result of the finite element analysis of the pump car, the significant stress acting at the second stage of the boom and the maximum stress at the top of the boom were found to be 895.39 MPa, and M.S. Since it was evaluated the lowest at 0.04, the need for reinforcement was recognized. And it was confirmed that the 2nd stage boom was the most stressful and vulnerable part of the 1st to 5th stage booms. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the thickness and rigidity of members at the design and manufacturing stage, and to reinforce the steel plates of currently used equipment. In addition, it is urgent to establish a system that makes non-destructive testing mandatory for all general construction machinery and holds inspection agencies responsible for missing boom defects during non-destructive testing and regular inspections.

  • It is known that the adhesive interface testing of the rocket motor using the ultrasonic wave is superior to the other testing methods about the ability to economical detect the defects. But, the signal analysis of the ultrasonic wave takes a lot of time and efforts because the time interval of the transmitted pulse and the received pulse is too short to separate the reflected signals due to the multi-layers of the rocket motor. The ultrasonic testing of rocket motor have only applied to the automatic system about extremely limited areas like the debond in adhesive interface between the motor case and the insulator. In this study the new technique to detect the debond between the liner and the propellant using the property of the resonance and the lamb waves instead of the existing ultrasonic testing was described.
