Nonlinear Forced Torsional Vibration for the Engine Shafting System With Viscous Damper (점성댐퍼를 갖는 엔진 축계의 비선형 비틀림강제진동)

  • The torsional vibration of the propulsion shafting system equipped with viscous damper is investigated. The equivalent system is modeled by a two mass softening system with Duffing's oscillator and the vibratory motion is described by non-linear differential equations of second order. The damper casing is fixed at the front-end of crankshaft and the damper's inertia ring floats in viscous silicon fluid inside of the camper casing. The excitation frenquency is proportional to the rotational speed of engine. The steady state response of the equivalent system is analyzed by the computer and for this analyzing, the harmonic balance method is adopted as a non-linear vibration analysis technique. Frequency response curves are obtained for 1st order resonance only. Jump phenomena are explained. The discriminant for the solutions of the steady state response is derived. Both theoretical and measured results of the propulsion shafting system are compared with and evaluated. As a result of comparisions with both data, it was confirmed that Duffing's oscillator can be used in the modeling of the propulsion shafting system attached with viscous damper with non-linear stiffness.

  • Two-Way CAR-FERRY land and islands, islands to islands, the connection between sustainable marine transportation in conjunction with the increasing demand of tourists, according to the associated coastal maritime tourism and passenger transport has a role. Engine output accordingly, linear and torsional vibration reducer by, elastic coupling selection transverse vibration and shaft alignment (Shaft alignment) considering the shaft design (bearing size, width, thickness) and the primary drive shaft support portion of the hull structure of evaluated for quality.

  • The recently developed marine engines for propulsion of ships have higher torsional exciting force than previous engines to improve the propulsion efficiency and to reduce specific fuel oil consumption. As a result, a viscous damper or viscous-spring damper is installed in front of marine engine to control the torsional vibration. In the case of viscous damper, it is supposed that there is no elastic connection in the silicon oil, which is filled between the damper housing and inertia ring. However, In reality, the silicon oil with high viscosity possesses torsional stiffness and has non-linear dynamic characteristics according to the operating temperature and frequency of the viscous damper. In this study, the damping characteristics of a viscous damper used to control the torsional vibration of the shafting system have been reviewed and the characteristics of torsional vibration of the shafting system equipped with a corresponding viscous damper have been examined. In addition, it is examined how to interpret the theoretically optimal dynamic characteristics of a viscous damper for this purpose, and the optimum design for the propulsion shafting system has been suggested considering the operating temperature and aging. when the torsional vibration of the shafting system is controlled by a viscous damper filled with highly viscous silicon oil.

  • A propulsion and lift shafting system in an air cushion vehicle is flexible multi-elements system which consists of two aeroderivative gas turbines with own bevel gears, four stage lift fan reduction gear, two stage propulsion reduction gear air propellers and high capacity of lifting fans. In addition, the system includes the multi-branched shafting with multi-gas turbine engines and thin walled shaft with flexible coupling. Such a branched shafting system has very intricate vibrating characteristics and especially, the thin walled shaft with flexible couplings can lower the torsional natural frequencies of shafting system to the extent that causes a resonance in the range of operating revolution. In this study, to evaluate vibrational characteristics some analytical methods for the propulsion and lift shafting system are studied. The analysis, including natural frequencies and mode shapes, for five operation cases of the system is conducted using ANSYS code with a equivalent mass-elastic model.

  • The Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) material is recently widely used in the composite industry with excellent rigidity and lightweight properties. A ship shaft system requires high standards of safety on torsional strength capacity. The purpose of this study is to verify the applicability of a CFRP shaft system to take the place of metal shaft systems for ships from a viewpoint of torsional strength. Selection of materials and manufacturing method are executed then two geometrically scaled CFRP shaft system models were designed and manufactured with three-layer patterns. The models were used for a series of torsion tests under single and repeated torsional loading conditions. Detailed design and manufacturing methods for a CFRP ship shaft system are documented and the torsion test results are listed in this paper. The results of this study could be useful guidelines on the development of CFRP ship shaft systems and a test method.

  • Two stroke low speed diesel engines are mainly used for marine propulsion or power plant prime mover. These have many merits such as higher thermal efficiency, mobility and durability. However various annoying vibrations sometimes occur in ships or at the plant itself. Of these vibrations, torsional vibration is very important and it should be carefully investigated during the initial design stage for engine's safe operation. In this paper authors suggest a new estimation method of for shaft's can be calculated equivalently from accumulated fatigue cycles number due to torsional vibration. The 6S70MC-C($25,320ps{\times}91rpm$) engine for ship propulsion was selected as a case study, and the accumulated fatigue cycles numbers for shafting life time converted from the measured angular velocity and torsional vibration stress was calculated. This new method can be realized and confirmed in test model ship with two stroke low speed diesel engine.

Optimum Design of Viscous Fluid Damper for Reducing the Torsional Vibration of Propulsion Shaft System (추진축계 비틀림 진동 감쇠를 위한 점성 댐퍼의 최적 설계)

  • In this study, the torsional vibration analysis for a marine propulsion system is carried out by using the transfer matrix method(TMM). The torsional moment produced by gas pressure and reciprocating inertia force may yield severe torsional vibration problem in the shaft system which results in a damage of engine system. There are several ways to control the torsional vibration problem at hand, firstly natural frequencies can be changed by adjusting shaft dimensions and/or inertia quantities, secondly firing order and crank arrangement are modified to reduce excitation force, and finally lower the vibration energy by adopting torsional vibration damper. In this paper, the viscous torsional vibration damper is used for reducing the torsional vibration stresses of shaft system and it is conformed that optimum model of the viscous damper can be determined by selecting the geometric design parameters of damper and silicon oil viscosity.

  • For the past years, higher power rating 2 stroke super long stroke diesel engines having more than 8 cylinders and larger cylinder bore are installed mainly on very large containerships to save on fuel consumption. However, these engines are prone to X-mode vibration due to $2^{nd}$ node torsional vibration or the X-type moment, particularly because of the increase in total length and height. Recently, cases of excessive X-mode vibration often occurred on engine's major components. This vibration is manifested also as secondary vibration causing failure in engine-mount large structures. This study investigated the excitations caused by the $2^{nd}$ node propulsion shafting torsional vibration that influence X-mode vibration of the main engine and practical countermeasures are proposed. An 8RT-82RT-flex 8 cylinder engine and 11S90S-ME 11 cylinder engine for a container ship was used as research model.

  • The shipbuilder's requirement for a higher power output rating has led to the development of a super large two stroke low speed diesel engines. Usually a large-sized bore engine ranging from $8{\sim}14$ cylinders, this engine group is capable of delivering power output of more than 100,000 bhp at maximum continuous rating(mcr). Other positive aspects of this engine type include higher thermal efficiency, reliability, durability and mobility. This plays a vital role in meeting the propulsion requirement of vessels, specifically for large container ships, of which speed is a primary concern to become more competitive. Consequently, this also resulted in the modification of engine parameters and new component designs to meet the consequential higher mean effective pressure and higher maximum combustion pressure. Even though the fundamental excitation mechanisms unchanged, torsional vibration stresses in the propulsion shafting are subsequently perceived to be higher. As such, one important viewpoint in the initial engine design is the resulting vibration characteristic expected to prevail on the propulsion shafting system(PSS). This paper investigated the torsional vibration characteristics of these super large engines. For the two node torsional vibration with a nodal point on the crankshaft, a tuning damper is necessary to reduce the torsional stresses on the crankshaft. Hence, the tuning torsional vibration damper design and compatibility to the shafting system was similarly reviewed and analyzed.

  • 로터-베어링축계는 증기및 가스터빈, 터보 발전기, 압축기등 거의 모든 산업 기계류에서 동력 전달의 기본 도구로써 사용되고 있다. 즉 회전에 의한 동력 의전달은 비교적 간단히 대용량의 동력을 효율적으로 전달할 수 있다. 이에 따라 회전기계류에 대한 연구는 산업 혁명 이후 꾸준히 발전되어 온바, 특히 근래에 들어와 산업기계류의 경쟁이 치열하여짐에 따라 산업기계류의 고정 밀화, 고속화, 고신뢰화 요구가 증대하고 있는 현실을 비추어 볼때, 산업 기 계류의 근간을 이루고 있는 로터-베어링 축계의 안정성을 포함한 진동에 관 한 문제는 회전기계류 설계의 주요 기술로써 연구.개발의 필요성이 매우 높 다 하겠다. 회전축계 진동 관련 연구는 두 분야로 대별될 수 있는데 언밸런 스(Unbalance)에 의한 Synchronous진동과 여러가지 원인에 의해 계의 불안 정성을 유발시키는 Nonsynchronous진동으로 나눌 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 이들 연구의 기본이 되는 회전축-베어링계 동특성 해석 프로그램을 개발하 였다. 여러가지 방법이 있으나 여기서는 Holzer가 비틀림 진동에 적용하고, Mykiestad(2)와 Prohl(3)에 의하여 회전축의 횡 진동에 적용된 이후 Lund(4) 등에 의하여 베어링의 영향등이 첨가된 전달 매트릭스 (Transfer Matrix) 방 법을 이용하여 임계속도(Critical Speed), 모우드 형태(Mode shapes)를 예측 하고 불안정 판정(Instability Criteria)등을 할 수 있는 프로그램을 개발하였 다. 특히 Murphy(1)의 다항식 방법(Polynomial Method)에 기본을 두어 기존 의 전달 매트릭스가 가지고 있던 반복, 수렴 시간 문제와 빠뜨리는 임계속도 예측에 대한 개선을 이루었으며 기존 논문과 실험 결과와의 비교 검토를 통 하여 개발된 프로그램의 신뢰성을 검토하였다. 특히, 각종 회전 기계의 소형 화, 경량화 추세에 따라 지반이나 케이싱이 경량이거나 유연하여 회전축과 동적으로 연성된 경우 회전축-베어링-지반으로 이루어진 2중구조의 회전축 계 동특성을 해석할 수 있는 프로그램을 개발하므로서 회전 기계류의 진동 전반에 걸친 문제점에 대한 그 원인과 현상을 명확히 분석하여 국내의 전기 계류의 보다 신뢰성있는 설계 및 제작자료를 확보하는데 기여할 수 있게 하 였다.
