In this study, we analyzed the crack-healing characteristics of specimens; different crack lengths and coating methods of $Si_3N_4$ ceramic structures with long cracks were analyzed. Cracks with lengths of about $100-500\;{\mu}m$ were obtained using a Vickers indenter for a load of 24.5-98 N. In the case of a crack obtained by applying a load of 24.5 N, the crack-healed specimen with $SiO_2$ nanocolloid coating exhibited the highest bending strength, which was higher than that of a smooth specimen by 140%, but the bending strength of a crack-healed specimen that had a $SiO_2$ nanocolloid coating and originally had multiple cracks was lower than that of a smooth specimen. However, when compared to the cracked specimens, the bending strength of most specimens with multiple cracks increased slightly. On the basis of these results, the crack-healing characteristics of $Si_3N_4$ ceramic structures with multiple indentations were studied for different coating methods. The most effective coating method for long-crack specimens was hydrostatic pressure coating.

We newly propose that we may reuse scrap powders ($Z_rO_2$+8 mol%-$Y_2O_3$) as $Y_2O_3$-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) sintered products through sintering process at 1550$^{circ}C$ for 2hrs. We also prepared the reference specimen from fresh $Z_rO_2$+30 mol%-$Y_2O_3$ powder mixture (celluar type with 1㎛-length). The reference sample showed a dense microstructure with grains of $\sim$10㎛ in diameter, while the sintered sample from scrap powder showed irregular grains of 1$\sim$30 ㎛ in diameter. Through XRD analysis, we confirmed that the reference sample has mixed phases of $Y_2O_3$(cubic), $Z_{r0.8}O_{1.9}$(cubic), and $Z_rO_2$(monoclinic), while the sintered YSZ sample from scrap powder has only tetragonal phase. Moreover, the sintered YSZ from scrap powder showed vickers hardness and apparent density more than 70 and 4.11 g/cc, which implies that it can be suitable for structural material application.

We executed the property changes of the sintered MgO (99.9% purity, 300nm size) specimens with addition to CaO content of 0.00wt%, 0.25wt%, and 0.50wt%, processed at 7GPa, for 5min, 600~$800^{\circ}C$. To investigate the micro-structure and physical property changes of the sintered MgO(-CaO), we employed a scanning electron microscopy(SEM), X-ray diffractomerty(XRD), Vickers hardness, and density. The SEM result showed that MgO powder of 300nm size was changed into sintered structure of 520nm by high pressure and low temperature sintering, regardless of the CaO contents. According to the XRD analysis, no CaO phase observed, while MgO peaks shift indicated the existence of CaO in the MgO matrix. The Vickers hardness result showed that hardness of sintered MgO-CaO increased by 12% compared pure MgO under the same temperature conditions. It implied that we can obtain the same hardness with $100^{\circ}C$ lowered sintering temperatures by addition of CaO. The density results showed that it was possible to obtain density of 98%, which is 5% greater than that of pure MgO at low temperature of $600^{\circ}C$.
The recovery activation energy, the order of reaction and the recovery rate constant were detemined by isochronal and isothermal annealing treatment to investigate the recovery behaviors of neutron irradiated Mn-Mo-Ni low alloy steels$(fluence: 2.3\times10^{19}ncm^{-2}, 553K, E\geq1.0 MeV)$. Vickers microhardness tests were conducted to trace the recovery behavior after heat treatments. The results were analyzed in terms of recovery stages, behavior of responsible defects and recovery kinetics. It was shown that recovery occurred through two annealing stages(stage I : 703-753K, stage n : 813-873K) with re$\infty$very activation energies of 2.5 eV and 2.93 eV for each stage I and n, respectively. From the comparison of unirradiated and irradiated isochronal anneal curves, a radiation anneal hardening(RAH) peak was identified at around 813K. Most of recovery have occurred during about 120 min irrespective of isothermal annealing temperatures of 743K and 833K. Recovery rate constants were determined to be $3.4\times10^{-4}min^{-1} and 7.1\times10^{-4}min^{-1}$ for stage I and II, respectively. The order of reaction was about 2 for both recovery stages. Comparing the obtained data with those of previously reported results on neutron irradiated Mn- Mo- Ni steels, the thermal recovery behavior of the present material seems to occur by the dissociation of point defect clusters formed during irradiation, and by the recombination process of self-interstitials and vacancies from dissociated vacancy clusters.
Purpose: TiN films were deposited on sus304 by unbalanced magnetron sputtering system which was designed and developed as unbalancing the strength of the magnets in the magnetron electrode. The color and hardness of deposited TiN films was investigated. Methods: The cross sections of deposited films on silicon wafer were observed by SEM to measure the thickness of the films, the components of the surface of the films were identified by XPS, the components of the inner parts of the films were observed by XPS depth profiling. XPS high resolution scans and curve fittings of deposited films were performed for quantitative chemical analysis, Vickers micro hardness measurements of deposited films were performed with a nano indenter equipment. Results: The colors of deposited films gradually changed from light gold to dark gold, light violet, and indigo color with increasing of the thickness. It could be seen that the color change come from the composite change of three compound,$TiO_{x}N_{y}$, $TiO_2$, TiN. Especially, the composite change of$TiO_{x}N_{y}$ compound was thought to affect the color change with respect to thickness. Conclusions: Deposited films had lower than the value of general TiN film in Vickers hardness, which was caused by mixing three TiN, $TiO_2$,$TiO_{x}N_{y}$ compound in the deposited films. The increasing and decreasing of micro hardness with respect to thickness was thought to have something to do with the composite of TiN in the films.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate color change and enamel surface changes using the plasma arc light source during tooth bleaching treatments. Twenty-four extracted bovine incisors were selected and embedded in the resin blocks. All the specimens were highly polished and discolored with commercial $COCK^{(R)}$. High concentration carbamide peroxide with and without plasma arc were used for bleaching. Specimens were bleached for 1 hour per week during 3 weeks. Color and enamel surface changes were determined with colorimeter (TC-8600A), microhardness tester(MXT-a7), scanning electron microscope(S-4200). All the collected data analyzed with paired t-test, t-test and one-way ANOVA. After the bleaching, both groups showed the color changes(${\Delta}E^*$). Microhardness of two group decreased after tooth bleaching. The SEM evaluation of enamel surface of both group showed a similar morphology of decalcification after tooth bleaching. Office bleaching using the plasma arc application with 35% carbamide peroxide can increase the color change. Office bleaching using the high concentration of carbamide peroxide and plasma arc also detract the outer surface of enamel. It is recommended that careful procedures are needed during office bleaching with high concentration of carbamide peroxide and light source.

Microcephalic osteodysplastic primordial dwarfism type II (MOPD II) is an autosomal recessive inherited disorder form of primordial dwarfism, caused by mutations in the pericentrin gene. The purpose of the study was to examine the clinical and radiological features, physicochemical properties and microstructures of the tooth affected with MOPD II. The mandibular 2nd molar was collected from the MOPD II patient. Micro-computerized tomography, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometry and Vickers microhardness analysis were performed on the MOPD II and the normal control. The morphology of the MOPD II tooth appeared to have malformed pulp and root and showed a small size. The mineral density measurement showed that the MOPD II tooth had similar scores in the enamel, but lower scores in the root 1/2 and apical dentin compared to the normal control. The microhardness values were smaller in the cusp enamel, root 1/2 dentin and apical dentin of the MOPD II compared to the normal control. In this study, the dental characteristics and the physicochemical properties of a tooth affected with MOPD II were analyzed to improve understanding of the oral manifestations of the disease and to assist in proper dental treatment by identifying precautions.

As a common side effect of fixed orthodontic treatment, demineralization of the enamel adjacent to the bracket and band occurs in patients with poor oral hygiene. The purpose of this study was to investigate what is the most effective method to prevent demineralization around the fixed orthodontic appliance among various methods using fluoride. 80 extracted bovine incisors with a healthy surface were classified into four groups as experimental materials: (Group I) Control group, (Group II) V $varnish^{TM}$, (Group III) Tooth Mousse $Plus^{(R)}$, (Group IV) $Vanish^{TM}$ XT. After treatment for each group, mineral loss and Vickers surface microhardness were measured at 0, 30, 60 and 90 days after demineralization in artificial carious solution. Mineral loss was the lowest in group IV, followed by group II and group III, which showed a significant difference. The surface microhardness was the lowest in group IV, followed by group II and group III, which showed a significant difference. Through this study, group IV showed the best effect to prevent enamel demineralization around the bracket. Group III showed significant prevention of enamel demineralization compared with the control group, but the effect was less than that of the other groups.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the polymerization ability of resin-based materials used for teeth splinting according to the thickness of cure. Materials and Methods: For this study, the Light-Fix and G-FIX developed for resinous splinting materials and the G-aenial Universal Flo, the high-flowable composite resin available as restorative and splinting material, were used. Ten specimens of the thickness of 2, 3, 4 and 5 mm and 5 mm in diameter for each composite resin (total 120) were prepared. The microhardness of top and bottom surfaces for each specimen was measured by the Vickers hardness testing machine. The polymerization ability of the composite resin for each thickness was statistically analyzed using independent T-test at a 0.05 level of significance. Results: There was no difference of polymerization ability regardless of the thickness in the Light-Fix and G-FIX. The G-aenial Universal Flo showed significantly low polymerization ability from the thickness of the 3 mm (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The Light-Fix and G-FIX, which are resin-based materials used for teeth splinting, are expected to be suitable for light curing up to 5 mm in thickness.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of adding a protective coating on the microhardness and wear resistance of glass ionomer cements (GICs). Specimens were prepared from GIC and resin-modified GIC (RMGI), and divided into 3 groups based on surface protection: (1) no coating (NC), (2) Equia coat coating (EC), and (3) un-filled adhesive coating (AD). All specimens were then placed in distilled water for 24 h. Surface hardness (n = 10) was evaluated on a Vickers hardness testing machine. Wear resistance (n = 10) was evaluated after subjecting the specimen to thermocycling for 10,000 cycles using a chewing simulator. Data were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA and the Kruskal-Wallis test. Surface hardness was highest in the NC groups, followed by the EC and AD groups. The wear depth of GI + NC was significantly higher than that of all RMGI groups. EC did not significantly lower the wear depth compared to AD. Based on these results, it was concluded that although EC does not increase the surface microhardness of GIC, it can increase the wear resistance.
