The occurrence of toothache signals the malfunction in oral health, which allows the detection of any abnormal condition in the oral cavity at an early stage to prevent the condition from worsening, and thus can act as a preventive measure. This study has looked into the status of oral health management in relation to toothache through the structured survey administered to 235 college students. Based on the survey results, this study aimed at comparing the toothache occurrence prediction between regression analysis and CART model in order to clarify the relationship between the factors of oral health management habits that contribute to toothache occurrence. According to the result, there was a difference between the present health status and the health status of the past year depending on the presence or non-presence of toothache occurrence (p<0.05). There was a difference in the regularity of meal time depending on the presence non-presence of toothache occurrence from the dietary habits of the research subjects (p<0.05). As for the presence or non-presence of toothache occurrence from the oral hygiene habits of the research subject, there was a difference between the occurrence and nonoccurrence of bleeding during brushing or flossing (p<0.05). According to the results of regression analysis, no factors were signifiant in the relationship with the presence or non-presence of toothache occurrence from the status of life habits and oral hygiene habits. 70% of the researched group was randomly selected as the sample for generating an analytical model and the remaining 30% was used as the sample for generating an evaluation model. According to the results of CART model, the occurrence of toothache was higher in the case of irregular meal time and poor current health condition than the case of average or satisfactory health condition. The above results imply that CART model is very useful technique in predicting toothache occurrence compared to regression analysis, and suggests that CART model could be very useful in predicting other oral diseases including toothache.
Monocrotaline (MCT) is a pyrrolizidine alkaloid (PA) plant toxin that produces hapatotoxicity in humans and animals. To felt the hypothesis, we investigated the possible protective effects of Haedokjeongki-tang as an antioxidant against MCT-induced liver injury in rats. Cells with apoptotic morphology have been observed in the livers of animals exposed to Ph and Haedokjeongki-tang. Whether apoptosis occurs in the livers of MCT-treated animals and whether it is required for full manifestation of pathological changes is not known, To determine this, rats were treated with 100 mg MCT/kg, and apoptosis was detected by transmission electron microscopy and TUNEL assay. MCT produced apoptosis in the liver by 6 h after treatment and increased by 24 h. Administration of Haedokjeongki-tang did affect liver structure and inhibit apopotosis in MCT-induced liver injury. Upon light and electron microscopic examination, we observed that Haedokjeongki-tang improved the morphological and histopathological changes of the liver caused by MCT-induced injury. MCT caused a time-dependent release of GOT and GPT, a marker of liver injury. Furthermore, we observed with respect to antioxidants status, catalase and superoxide dismutase activity tended to be higher in the MCT-treated rats than in the Haedokjeongki-tang administered rats. Our finding showed that Haedokjeongki-tang administration partially reduced liver injury after MCT exposure.
The immune responses of commercial layer chickens against Newcastle disease (ND) were compared among different administration methods and times of vaccination during 4 weeks of age. A total of 372 day-old chickens were devided into 4 groups of 93 birds each. Each of 3 groups was received a commercially available B$_1$ live vaccine via drinking water, eye instillation or spray method at one, 14 and 28 days of age. One group was used as an unvaccinated control. At two and 4 weeks after each time of vaccination, 15 birds from each group were challenged with virulent ND virus at the dose of 10$^{5}$ EID$_{50}$ per bird to examine the pretection rate. Ten to 15 birds from each group were bled at two weeks intervals from day old to 8 weeks of age to determine hemagglutination inhibition antibody titer. The protection rate was generally low regardless of the times of vaccination although two or more times vaccination gave higher protection than once vaccination. The low protection was considered due to low titer of the vaccine used since the vaccine titer was less than 10$^{2.5}$ EID$_{50}$ per bird. Spray method gave better protection compared to eye instillation of drinking water method which resulted in lowest response. When birds were challenged majority showed clinical signs on ND between 3 and 6 days after challenge. Death occured one or two days after onset of symptoms. Major clinical signs observed were depression (96%), drowsy(90%), anorexia (84%), diarrhoea (29%), difficult breath (15%) and torticollis (10%). Hemorrhagic lesions on post mortem were seen in duodenum (51%), trachea(36%), illeum (13%), ceacal tonsil (11%), proventriculus (10%) and some other organs. The aim of this study was to investigate and compare technique, surgical time, and complications of laparoscopic ovariectomy using $LigaSure^{TM}$ and bipolar vessel sealing system in cats. Laparoscopic ovariectomy was performed under general anesthesia on 10 healthy female cats admitted for elective ovariectomy. Surgery was performed through three midline portals. Each ovary was randomly-assigned to removal by use of either $LigaSure^{TM}$ or bipolar vessel sealing system. Duration of predetermined surgery intervals and complications were compared. Bipolar OVE ($2:16{\pm}1:14$ minutes) took significantly longer surgical time compared to the $LigaSure^{TM}$ OVE ($1:24{\pm}0:59$ minutes, P = 0.021). The ovarian pedicle fat and obesity did not influence surgery duration. Intraoperative hemorrhage occurred with bipolar OVE in three cats, but had no significant influence on surgical time. The results suggest that both $LigaSure^{TM}$ and bipolar devices appear to be effective, but $LigaSure^{TM}$ can be used as a stand-alone device that decreases surgical time and complication compared with bipolar vessel sealing system.
Objective : This study was designed to investigate the effect of the Sa-Am Acupuncture treatment on two patients suffering from Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus(NPH). Methods : We selected the two patients who were admitted with NPH. The patients were women with complaints of gait disturbance, dementia, incontinence, hemiparesis and dysarthria, after occurring of cerebral infarction or SAH. We treated the two patients by Sa-Am Acupuncture treatment method and herbal medication. One patient was treated during 64 days, the other was treated during 14 days. Results & conclusions : The Sa-Am Acupuncture treatment was effective on one pateint, not the other. After treatment through oriental medicine, including Sa-Am Acupuncture treatment method, one patient was improved but the other was not changed. Therefore, this application of oriental medicine and Sa-Am Acupuncture treatment are reported with a plea for further investigation.
Crytocaryon irritans infection of rock bream was investigated in embankment fish farm from July to December 2009. Prevalence variation was 20.0~88.0% that was high in september and was low in July. While no mortality was found in July and August, it occurred after mid september. Environmental conditions during the survey period were water temperature $19.3{\sim}24.3^{\circ}C$, dissolved oxygen $5.0{\sim}7.1\;mg\;L^{-1}$ and salinity 31.9~33.7 psu, and the water temperature during mortality season was $24.0^{\circ}C$. External symptom of the rock bream was secretion mucus but swimming showed fine in the early infected period. While, the symptoms in the severe outbreak season were excess of mucus, falling off tail and congestion, bleeding spot the surface and weakened swimming. We observed free living and parasitic stages in the gills and body surface of rock bream. Hepato somatic index (HSI) was $1.9{\pm}1.1{\sim}3.5{\pm}1.7%$, which was low in the September being mortality season but was high in November. The percentages of hematocrit infected with Crytocaryon irritans were 37.3% and 41.0% in July and August, respectively while they gradually decreased to 32.1% and 24.2% in september and October, respectively. Total cholesterol and Triglyceride values rapidly decreased by October. After mortality, AST and ALT were 7 and 5 folds higher compared to non-mortality season.
The aim of this study was to examine the geriatric status, oral health, and oral health related quality of life of stroke patients hospitalized at a rehabilitatio ward and assess the relationships among these factors. A total of 78 stroke patients participated in this cross-sectional study. The following oral examinations were performed by a dentist and dental hygienist: Decayed, Missing, Filled Teeth, gingival, debris, calculus, and community periodontal index (CPI). The patients' sociodemographic and geriatric status were evaluated using the Barthel index and a mini-mental state examine (MMSE) according to their medical record and a questionnaire survey. Oral health related quality of life was assessed using the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP)-14 questionnaire. Except for three participants, most stroke patients had a gingival index of 2 or more, which means probing results in bleeding gums. Additionally, 53.8% of participants had a CPI code of 3 or 4, which indicates a probing depth of 4 mm or more. CPI index was significantly related to debris, calculus, and gingival index. The OHIP-14 score significantly related to the Barthel index and MMSE (p<0.05). The oral health of stroke patients in the rehabilitation ward was relatively poor and related to poor oral hygiene. Oral health related quality of life was related not to oral health but to geriatric status significantly.

Periodontal inflammation, a major kind of periodontal diseases, is characterized to bleed, pain, and teeth loss, and it is resulted from oxidative stress. Membrane-free stem cell extract could avoid the immunogencity rejection by removal of cell membrane. In the present study, we investigated the protective effect of membrane-free stem cell extract from oxidative stress-induced periodontal inflammation in human periodontal ligament fibroblasts (HPLF). In the cell viability measurement, membrane-free stem cell extract showed significant increase of cell viability, compared with the $H_2O_2$-treated control group. To further investigation of molecular mechanisms, we measured inflammation and apoptosis related protein expressions. Membrane-free stem cell extract attenuated inflammation-related protein expressions such as nuclear factor kappa light chain enhancer of activated B cells, inducible nitric oxide synthase, and interleukin-6. In addition, the treatment of membrane-free stem cell extract decreased apoptotic protein expressions such as cleaved caspase-9, -3, poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase, and B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2)-associated X protein/Bcl-2 ratio in the $H_2O_2$-treated HPLF cells. In conclusion, membrane-free stem cell extract exhibited anti-oxidative stress effects by regulation of inflammation and apoptosis in HPLF, suggesting that it could be used as the treatment agents for periodontal inflammatory disease.

Objective: The SAFARI score was introduced to assess the risk of convulsive seizure during admission for aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage in 2017. This study was conducted to determine whether the SAFARI score derived from the afore-mentioned study could be applied to patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage in Korea. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of patients who were diagnosed with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage from March 2013 to October 2017. Patients' age, sex, blood pressure, pulse rate, body temperature, Glasgow-Coma Scale, Hunt-Hess scale, modified Fisher grade, size of ruptured aneurysm, surgery type, transfusion, and SAFARI score were compared between the seizure and non-seizure groups. The area under the receiver operator characteristic curves was calculated to evaluate the predictive ability for seizure during admission. Logistic regression analysis was used to analyze predictive factors for seizure during admission. Results: A total of 220 patients were included. Ninety-seven (44.1%) were male and 123 (55.9%) were female. The mean age of the patients was 65.8 years old (range, 56-75). The area under the curve of the SAFARI score for predicting seizure was 0.813. The SAFARI score was the only significant predictor of seizure during admission, while other factors were not statistically significant upon logistic regression analysis. Conclusion: The SAFARI score could be used for predicting seizure during admission in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage.
