  • A Navier-Stokes equation solver for incompressible viscous flows with free surface is developed and tested. This is based upon a fractional time step method and a non-staggered finite volume formulation for unstructured meshes. For time advancement scheme, Adams -Bashforth method for convective term and Crank-Nicolson method for diffusive term are applied. The interface between two fluids with different fluid properties is tracked with Piecewise Linear Interface Calculation(PLIC) Volume-of-Fluid(VOF) methods. Computational results are presented for some test problems: the broken dam, the sloshing in a rectangular tank, the filling of a cylindrical tank.

  • A field reconstruction scheme for a cell centered finite volume method on unstructured meshes is developed. Regardless of mesh quality, this method is exact within a machine accuracy if the solution is linear, which means it has full second order accuracy. It does not have any limitation on cell shape except convexity of the cells and recovers standard discretization stencils at structured orthogonal grids. Accuracy comparisons with other popular reconstruction schemes are performed on a simple example.

  • In the Present Study, a 3-D viscous flow solver, based on unstructured hybrid meshses containing tetrahedra, prisms and pyramids, has been developed. A finite-volume discretization scheme is used for solving the compressible Navier-Stokes equations. A cell-vertex median dual volume is used for spatial discretization. The one-equation Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model has been adopted to evaluate the eddy viscosity. Validation were made by computing laminar and turbulent flows around a 3-D wing for steady flows and turbulent flows around an oscillating 3-D wing in harmonic motion for unsteady flows.

  • A new anisotropic mesh refinement method is proposed. The new method is based on a simple second order interpolation error indicator. Therefore, it is methodologically direct and intuitive as compared with traditional anisotropic refinement strategies. Moreover, it does not depend on the mesh type. The error indicator is face-wisely calculated for all faces in a mesh and the cell refinement type is determined by the configuration of face markings with a given threshold. For the sake of simplicity, an application for a poisson equation on a triangle mesh is considered. The error field and resultant mesh refinement pattern are compared and effects of the threshold selection are discussed. Applying anisotropic refinement with various thresholds, we observed higher convergence rates than those in the uniform refinement cases.

  • The inverse radiation analysis of a two-dimensional irregular configuration using unstructured triangular meshes is presented. In this study, an enclosure filled with an absorbing, emitting and scattering medium with diffusely emitting and reflecting opaque boundaries is considered. The finite volume method is applied to solve the radiative transfer equation in order to simulate the measured incident radiation values which are used as input data for the inverse analysis. The conjugate gradient method is adopted for the estimation of wall emissivities by minimizing the objective function at each iteration step. To verify the performance of the unstructured grid system, we compare the results with those using a structured grid system for the two-dimensional lopsided shape. The effect of measurement errors on the estimation accuracy is also investigated.

  • An extension of our recently developed locally linear reconstruction scheme to 2 dimensional incompressible flow solver is presented. The solver is based on a semi-implicit fractional step method in which the convective term is discretized by Adams-Bashforth method and the diffusion term by Crank-Nicolson method. Several numerical examples are tested to demonstrate the mesh type independent accuracy of the solver, which include decaying vortex flow, square cavity flow, and flow around a circular cylinder. The above examples are solved on quadrilateral or hybrid meshes. For all numerical examples, we obtained reasonable results.

  • The present study has numerically analyzed the vaporization characteristics of fuel droplets in the high temperature convective flow field. The axisymmetric governing equations for mass, momentum, energy, and species are solved by an iterative and implicite unstructured finite-volume method. The moving boundary due to vaporization is handled by the deformable unstructured grid technique. The pressure-velocity coupling in the density-variable flows is treated by the SIMPLEC algorithm. In terms of the matrix solver, Bi-CGSTAB is employed for the numerically efficient and stable convergence. The n-decane is used as a liquid fuel and the initial droplet temperature is 300K. Computations are performed for the nonevaporating and evaporating droplets with the relative interphase velocity(25m/s). The unsteady vaporization process has been simulated up to the nondimensional time, 25. Numerical results indicate that the mathematical model developed in this study succesfully simulates the main features of the droplet vaporization process in the convective environment.

  • Ice accretion on the solid surface is an importance factor in assessing the performance of aircraft and wind turbine blade. Changes in the external shape due to ice accretion can greatly deteriorate the aerodynamic performance. In this study, a three-dimensional upwind-type second-order positivity-preserving finite volume CFD scheme based on the unstructured mesh topology is developed to simulate two-phase flow in atmospheric icing condition. The code is then validated by comparing with NASA IRT experimental data on the sphere. The present results of the collection efficiency are found to be in close agreement with experimental data and show improvement near the stagnation region.

  • Two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations have been solved by the node-centered finite volume method with the unstructured triangular meshes. The pressure-velocity coupling is handled by the artificial compressibility algorithm due to its computational efficiency associated with the hyperbolic nature of the resulting equations. The convective fluxes are obtained by the Roe's flux difference splitting scheme using edge-based connectivities and higher-order differences are achieved by a reconstruction procedure. The time integration is based on an explicit four-stage Runge-Kutta scheme. Numerical procedures with local time stepping and implicit residual smoothing have been implemented to accelerate the convergence for the steady-state solutions. Comparisons with experimental data and other numerical results have proven accuracy and efficiency of the present unstructured approach.
