  • The state-of-the art of detection and measurements of non-ionizing radiations are reviewed in relation to protection requirements, especially for electromagnetic and ultraviolet radiations. Dosimetric quantities, instruments and considerations needed for measurement are briefly explained. For electromagnetic radiation, the power density levels from various practical sources are summarized for reference uses. Large errors remain in the measurements of non-ionizinf radiations in general. Technical needs of development in measurement and dosimetry of non-ionizing radiations, therefore, are promissing when the increasing public concerns about the adverse health effects of non-ionizing radiations and proliferation of their uses are taken into account.

  • Near-infrared radiation (NIR) is non-ionizing, non-invasive, and deep tissue penetration in biological material, thereby increasing research interests as a medical imaging technique in the world. However, the use of current near-infrared medical image is extremely limited in Korea (ROK) since it is not well known among radiologic technologists and radiological researchers. Therefore to strengthen the knowledge for NIR medical imaging is necessary so as to prepare a qualified radiological professionals to serve medical images in high-quality on the clinical sites. In this study, an overview of the features and principles of NIR imaging was demonstrated. The latest research topics and worldwide research trends were introduced for radiologic technologist to reinforce their technical skills. In particular, wound care and diabetic foot which have high feasibility for clinical translation were introduced in order to contribute to accelerating NIR research for developing the field of radiological science.

  • Overall reviews of papers presented at the seventh IRPA International Congress (Aprill 10-17, 1988) held in Sydney, Australia have been done in order to grasp the trends of radiation research. In this report, the changing and increasing matters in the field of ionizing radiation safety as well as non-ionizing radiation application are introduced to the KARP. In addition, a research paper, 'Emission Rate Measurement of a Cf-252 Neutron Source by Manganous Sulfate Bath Method', presented at the IRPA 7 Poster Session is followed.

  • The Radio-frequency electromagnetic(RFEM) spectrum is defined as waves that range in frequency from>0 to $3{\times}1012Hz$. Although there are several thousands of reports that present data or opinion of the biological response to RFEM radiation, no consensus has emerged regarding thresholds and mechanisms of injury. This review presents a overview of the subject on mechanisms of interaction of RFEM fields with tissue, chromosomal and mutagenic effect. carcinogenic effects. The scope of the review is expanded to include systemic effects such as those on reproduction, growth, and development, hematological effects. Some biological end points, those with associated with behavior and cataractogenesis is discussed.

  • Globally, infection prevention and social awareness have been greatly changed by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus, and as a result, the infection control guidelines and procedures for patients with high exposure to hospital-acquired infection are further strengthened and management and monitoring are more thorough. In order to prevent infection, sterilization should be carried out with the highest priority, and we will find a sterilization method that is low in cost, easy to install, and easy to operate, to present appropriate sterilization effects. In this study, the UV sterilizer was used to contaminate the caries bacteria with an output of 4 W and irradiation time of 60, 150, and 300 sec, and the laser was irradiated with outputs of 0.8 and 1.5 W at wavelengths of 266 and 355 nm, respectively. Ultraviolet sterilizer showed safety in infection prevention at over 150 sec, and laser showed safety in prevention at 1.5 W, 0.8 W, and 266 nm. As a result, the higher the output and the wavelength closer to 253.7 nm, the better the sterilization effect.
