This study surveys how teachers can improve their understanding about the concept of declination only through reading the material presented as non-dipole magnetic model. This study also investigates a difference between the content of declination presented in "Earth Science II" textbook under the 2009 revised National Curriculum and that of the past one. Thirty teachers in Gyeonggi province and thirty three in the city of Seoul are surveyed; they are selected from the participants of required training that provides their first grade regular teaching certification. Findings of this study are as follows. First, the study finds that teacher participants possess several misconceptions about the declination. Their typical misconception show that a compass needle directly indicates the magnetic north pole. This type of misconception is not corrected only by a reading the material. Second, the study shows that the degree of teachers' understanding about the concept of declination improves through the reading the material of a non-dipole magnetic model. Third, the study reveals that the material of nod-dipole magnetic model is more effective with teachers than students. Finally, the study suggests that explanations including non-dipole magnetic model be revised in the current textbooks.
We have introduced a new approach to obtain the conductivity information of subsurface using Cagniard impedance over two-dimensional (2-D) model in the presence of horizontal magnetic dipole source with the frequency range of $1\;kHz\~1\;MHz$. Firstly, we designed the method to calculate the apparent resistivity from the ratio between horizontal electric and magnetic fields, Cagniard impedance, considering the source effects when the plane wave assumption is failed in finite source EM problem, and applied it to several numerical models such as homogeneous half-space or layered-earth model. It successfully provided subsurface information even though it is still rough, while the one with plane wave assumption is hard to give useful information. Next, through analyzing Cagniard impedance and apparent resistivity considering source effect over 2-D models containing conductive- or resistive-block, we showed that the possibility of obtaining conductivities of background media and anomaly using this approach. In addition, the apparent resistivity considering source effect and phase pseudosections constructed from Cagniard impedance over the isolated conductive- and resistive block model well demonstrated outlines of anomalies and conductivity distribution even though there were some distortions came from sidelobes caused by 2-D body.
In order to assess the feasibility of the dipole-dipole electric method to the investigation of metallic ore deposit, both field data simulation and inversion are carried out for several simplified ore deposit models. Our interest is in a vein-type model, because most of the ore deposits (more than 70%) exist in a vein type in Korea. Based on the fact that the width of the vein-type ore deposits ranges from tens of centimeters to 2m, we change the width and the material property of the vein, and we use 40m-electrode spacing for our test. For the vein-type model with too small width, the low resistivity zone is not detected, even though the resistivity of the vein amounts to 1/300 of that of the surrounding rock. Considering a wide electrode interval and cell size used in the inversion, it is natural that the size of the low resistivity zone is overestimated. We also perform field data simulation and inversion for a vein-type model with surrounding hydrothermal alteration zones, which is a typical structure in an epithermal ore deposits. In the model, the material properties are assumed on the basis of resistivity values directly observed in a mine originated from an epithermal ore deposits. From this simulation, we can also note that the high resistivity value of the vein does not affect the results when the width of the vein is narrow. This indicates that our main target should be surrounding hydrothermal alteration zones rather than veins in field survey. From these results, we can summarize that when the vein is placed at the deep part and the difference of resistivity values between the vein and the surrounding rock is not large enough, we cannot detect low resistivity zone and interpret the subsurface structures incorrectly using the electric method performed at the surface. Although this work is a little simple, it can be used as references for field survey design and field data Interpretation. If we perform field data simulation and inversion for a number of models and provide some references, they will be helpful in real field survey and interpretation.
Recently as the interest in the development of domestic ore deposits has increased, we can easily find some studies on exploration geophysics-based ore-deposit survey in literature. Based on the fact that mineralized zone are generally more conductive than surrounding media, electrical resistivity survey among several geophysical surveys has been applied to investigate metallic ore deposits. Most of them are grounded on 2-D survey. However, 2-D inversion may lead to some misinterpretation for 3-D geological structures. In this study, we investigate the feasibility of the 3-D electrical resistivity survey to 3-D vein-type ore deposits. We first simulate 2-D dipole-dipole survey data for survey lines normal to the strike and 3-D pole-pole survey data, and then perform 3-D inversion. For 3-D ore-body structures, we assume a width-varying dyke, a wedge-shaped, and a fault model. The 3-D inversion results are compared to 2-D inversion results. By comparing 3-D inversion results for 2-D dipole-dipole survey data to 3-D inversion results for 3-D pole-pole survey data, we could note that the 2-D dipole-dipole survey data yield better inversion results than the 3-D pole-pole data, which is due to the main characteristic of the pole-pole array. From these results, we are convinced that if we have certain information on the direction of the strike, it would be desirable to apply 2-D dipole-diple survey for the survey lines normal to the strike. However, in most cases, we do not have any information on the direction of the strike, because we already developed the ore deposit with the outcrops and the remaining ore deposits are buried under the surface. In that case, performing 3-D pole-pole electrical resistivity survey would be a reasonable choice to obtain more accurate interpretation on ore body structure in spite of low resolution of pole-pole array.
The five-story stone pagoda in Tamni-ri located in Uiseong County in Gyeongsangbuk-do had an unstable upper structure, and the structural deformation of the foundation stone and the stylobate was severe. In order to repair the base of the pagoda, it must be confirmed if there are support stones inside the base. Resistivity survey was performed to study the inner base stone structure during the repair work. The stylobate was exposed soil and broken stones after removing the walls and the cover of the stylobate. Modified pole-dipole array II was used for the resistivity survey, and compared with the typical pole-dipole array method. And in this study, a physical scale-down model experiment was performed to compare and analyze distortions caused by severe topographical undulations such as right-angled lines. The results show that the stylobate of Five-story Stone Pagoda in Tamni-ri Uiseong has base stones inside the reinforced filling soil and are located beneath the pillar of the body and supporting the pagoda.
The water leakage of reservoir embankment usually occurs around channelling pipes, which gives little influence on the embankment in a normal state. However, the embankment can be destroyed when the water level of reservoir increases with heavy rain and the rainy season in summer. Investigating the water vein and its path is therefore very important from the viewpoint of disaster prevention and embankment maintenance. The water leakage in dams and levees where the channelling pipes are working as weak zone was analyzed by using both numerical simulation and experimental method in this study. To detect the water leakage, an electrical resistivity survey was used and investigated for its' usability. The numerical results show the size and location of weak zone increases the importance of selection of electrode spacing. The leakage experiments of model embankment present the best result is obtained under the conditions of electrode spacing of 0.3m and dipole-dipole array. By studying the water leakage in dams and levees, the electrical resistivity survey is observed it is a very useful method to predict the leakage.
In this study, the new modeling scheme has been developed for recently designed and tested electromagnetic survey, which adapts horizontal magnetic dipole with $1\;kHz\~1\;MHz$ frequency range as a source. The 2.5-D secondary field formulation in wavenumber domain was constructed using finite element method and verified through comparing results with layered-earth solutions calculated by integral equations. 2-D conductive- and resistive-block models were constructed for calculating electric field, magnetic field and impedance - the ratio of electric and magnetic fields which are orthogonal each other. This study showed that electric field and impedance are superior in identifying 2-D isolated-body model to magnetic field. In particular, impedance gives more stable results than electric field with similar spatial resolving power, because electric field is divided by magnetic field in impedance. Thus the impedance analysis which uses electric and magnetic fields together would give better result in imaging the shallow anomalies than conventional EM method.
Recently as the interest in the development of domestic ore deposits has increased, we can easily find some studies on exploration geophysics-based ore deposit survey in literature. Geophysical surveys have been applied to the investigation of both metallic and non-metallic ore deposit. For metallic ore-deposit survey, the 2D electrical resistivity method has been popularly used, because metallic mineral deposits are generally more conductive than surrounding media. However, geological structures are 3D rather than 2D structures, which may lead to misinterpretation in 2D inversion section. In this study, 3D effects are examined for several 3D structures such as a width-varying dyke model and a wedge-shaped model. We also investigate the effects of the direction of survey line. Numerical results show that the width-varying dyke model yields some low resistivity zone in the deep part, which is independent of real ore-body location. For the wedge-shaped model, even though the survey line is located apart from the ore body, the 2D inversion section still shows low resistivity zone in the deep part. When the survey line is not perpendicular to the strike of the ore body, the low resistivity zone is slightly broader but shallower than that obtained along the survey line perpendicular to the strike. For the survey lines that have an angle smaller than $45^{\circ}$ with the strike of the ore body, the inversion results are totally distorted. From these results, we conclude that 2-D survey and interpretation can lead to misinterpretation of subsurface structures, which may be linked to economical loss. Eventually, we recommend to apply 3-D rather than 2-D electrical resistivity survey for ore-deposit survey.
This paper describes 2.5D induced polarization (IP) modeling and inversion algorithms using complex resistivity. The complex resistivity method has merits for acquiring more valuable information about hydraulic parameters and pore fluid than the conventional IP methods. The IP modeling and inversion algorithms are developed by allowing complex arithmetic in existing DC modeling and inversion algorithms. The IP modeling and inversion algorithms use a 2.5D DC finite-element algorithm and a damped least-squares method with smoothness constraints, respectively. The accuracy of the IP modeling algorithm is verified by comparing its responses of two synthetic models with two different approaches: linear filtering for a three-layer model and an integral equation method for a 3D model. Results from these methods are well matched to each other. The inversion algorithm is validated by a synthetic example which has two anomalous bodies, one is more conductive but non-polarizable than the background, and the other is polarizable but has the same resistivity as the background. From the inverted section, we can cleary identify each anomalous body with different locations. Furthermore, in order to verify its efficiency to the real filed example, we apply the inversion algorithm to another three-layer model which includes phase anomaly in the second layer.
More than 16 percent of the total 18,032 reservoirs over the country were reported to have leakage problems and need to be improved. Recently, a great deal of progress was made in geophysical survey techniques, particularly in electrical resistivity, and the techniques are used for variety of Purposes in groundwater and dam management due to its economical advantages. This document describes the re-evaluation of existing resistivity data including newly surveyed data, mapping of modeled value in 2-D analysis to locate seepage pathways, This contains also discussion results of more than eighteen years of professional experiences in the field of dam efficiency improvement. In comparison of surface resistivity data with several soil analysis data in laboratory, it is evident that the surface resistivity value shows a qualitative proportionality with the sand contents of the filling materials in earth dam. The result from the study also indicates that the SP method in subsurface investigation is effective to detect seepage in earth filled dam as well as piping through rock/earthfill dike.
