In this study, photocatalytic degradation and mineralization of bisphenol A (BPA), which has been listed as one of endocrine disruptors, were carried out in the CPC system using $Tio_2$ slurry and UVA irradiation. The degradation efficiency has been investigated under the controlled parameters including initial concentration (5, 10, 20 mg/L), dosage of $Tio_2$ (0.1, 0.5, 1.0 g/L), UVA power (0, 80, 120 W) and temperature (0, 20, 30). At 10mg/L of initial concentration, BPA was degraded above 80% after 10min, BPA were degraded 97% and 49% at 20 mg/L and 30 mg/L, respectively. At $Tio_2$ dosage was 0.1 and 0.5 g/L, the degradations of BPA showed similar trend and were about 70% after 1 hr, and the degradation of BPA was above 80% after 30 min at 1 g/L of $Tio_2$ dosage. The increase of degradation seem to be due to the increase in the total surface area, namely number of active sites, available for the photocatalytic reaction as the dosage of photocatalyst increased. When the UVA power was 120 W, BPA was degraded rapidly above 60% after 10min of reaction time. To investigate the effect of temperature, carried out experiment controlled temperature, there were no significant differences depending on the temperature. After 1hr, the degradation of BPA were 46%, 67%, and 69% at 10, 20 and $30^{\circ}C$.
In this study, conductive polymers and the enzyme tyrosinase (Tyr) were deposited on the surface of a screen printed carbon electrode (SPCE), which can be fabricated as a disposable sensor chip, and applied to the detection of bisphenol F (BPF), an endocrine disruptor with proven links to male diseases and thyroid disorders, using electrochemical methods. On the surface of the SPCE working electrode, which was negatively charged by oxygen plasma treatment, a positively charged conductive polymer, poly(diallyldimethyl ammonium chloride) (PDDA), a negatively charged polymer compound, poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS), and another layer of PDDA were layered by electrostatic attraction in the order of PDDA, PSS, and finally PDDA. Then, a layer of Tyr, which was negatively charged due to pH adjustment to 7.0, was added to create a PDDA-PSS-PDDA-Tyr sensor for BPF. When the electrode sensor is exposed to a BPF solution, which is the substrate and target analyte, 4,4'-methylenebis(cyclohexa-3,5-diene-1,2-dione) is generated by an oxidation reaction with the Tyr enzyme on the electrode surface. The reduction process of the product at 0.1 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) generating 4,4'-methylenebis(benzene-1,2-diol) was measured using cyclic and differential pulse voltammetries, resulting in a change in the peak current with respect to the concentration of BPF. In addition, we compared the detection performance of BPF using an ionic liquid electrolyte as an alternative to phosphate-buffered saline, which has been used in many previous sensing studies. Furthermore, the selectivity of bisphenol S, which acts as an interfering substance with a similar structure to BPF, was investigated. Finally, we demonstrated the practical applicability of the sensor by applying it to analyze the concentration of BPF in real samples prepared in the laboratory.
In this study, the formation of hydroxyl radical and decomposition characteristics of bisphenol A (BPA) was investigated by quantifying hydrogen peroxide formed as a reaction by-product during the formation stage of hydroperoxyl radical. The direct oxidation reaction by ozone only decomposed BPA just like the Criegee mechanism under the condition where radical chain reactions did not occur. Non-selective oxidation reactions occurred under the conditions of pH 6.5 and 9.5 where radical chain reactions do occur, confirming indirectly the formation of hydroxyl radical. The decomposition efficiency of BPA by the added catalysts appeared in the order of $O_3$/PAC ${\geq}$$O_3/H_2O_2$ > $O_3$/high pH > $O_3$ alone. 0.03~0.08 mM of hydrogen peroxide were continuously measured during the oxidation reactions of ozone/catalyst processes. In the case of $O_3$/high pH process, BPA was completely decomposed in 50 min of the oxidation reaction, but reaction intermediates formed by oxidation reaction were not oxidized sufficiently with 29% of the removal ratio for total organic carbon (TOC, selective oxidation reaction). In the case of $O_3/H_2O_2$ and $O_3$/PAC processes, BPA was completely decomposed in 40 min of the oxidation reaction, and reaction intermediates formed by the oxidation reaction were oxidized with 57% and 66% of removal ratios for TOC, respectively (non-selective oxidation reactions).
This study investigates the effect of effluent organic matter (EfOM) from sewage wastewater treatment plants on estrogenic activity reduction of bisphenol A (BPA) by UV photolysis. The EfOM and Suwannee River natural organic matter (SR-NOM) as reference were isolated into hydrophobic (HPO), transphilic (TPI) and hydrophilic (HPI) fractions depending on polarity. The specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA) analysis indicated that EfOM showed similar properties to microbially derived organic matters with low hydrophobicity, which is different from SR-NOM having high hydrophobicity. UV irradiation upto 3 hr significantly reduced SUVA values of both EfOM and SR-NOM (p<0.0001), depending on the polarity of organic matters. In the absence of organic matters, the relative estrogenic activity (REA) of BPA ($5.0{\times}10^{-5}M$) was decreased from 86% to 63% by UV photolysis (2 hr). However, the decrease of mean REA was from 68% to 37% in the presence of organic matters, which was significantly independent on the type (EfOM or SR-NOM) and polarity (HPO, TPI or HPI) of organic matters (p>0.05). As a result, the reduced REA by UV photolysis of BPA with and without organic matters was 31% and 23%, respectively, suggesting that both EfOM and SR-NOM accelerated the photolytic reduction of BPA estrogenic activity.
Objective: Environmental chemicals alter reproduction, growth, and survival by changing the normal function of the endocrine system. Bisphenol A (BPA), one of the endocrine disruptors, is known to be an estrogen receptor agonist. Therefore, we hypothesized that BPA may affect male reproduction including spermatogenesis in the mouse testis. Methods: We used 7-week-old ICR mice. The first experiment group received BPA in sesame oil (vehicle, 1 mg/kg, 10 mg/kg, and 100 mg/kg) by i.p. injection and mice were sacrificed 24 hr later. The second experiment group received BPA (vehicle, 10 ${\mu}g/kg$, 1 mg/kg, and 100 mg/kg) daily for 14 days by subcutaneous injection. Expression of cell type-specific marker genes in the testis was evaluated by RT-PCR. Histological analysis, immunofluorescence staining, and TUNEL staining were also performed. Results: RT-PCR analyses showed that expression of luteinizing hormone receptor (LHR), a marker gene for the Leydig cell, was notably decreased in the testes of high dose-exposed mice. No obvious difference in the histology of testes was noted among treatment groups. Immunostaining of LHR in the first experiment group did not show noticeable difference in LHR protein expression in Leydig cells. Immunohistochemistry also revealed heightened expression of the immunoreactive Bax in the treatment group, and this was accompanied by positive TUNEL staining in the interstitial area within testis where Leydig cells reside. Conclusions: Our result suggests that BPA affects Leydig cell functions by altering gene expression and by increasing apoptosis in the mouse testis.
ffects of radiation on the thermal and mechanical properties of modified epoxy resin and hydrogenated bisphenol-A type epoxy resin based neutron shielding materials to be used for radioactive material shipping and storage casks have been investigated. The onset temperatures of the shielding materials of KNS(Kaeri Neutron Shield)-201 and KNS-302 increased with the radiation dose, but those of KNS-202 and KNS-301 decreased at radiation dose above 0.5 MGy. In addition, the radiation dose rarely affected the change of weight of shielding materials with the variation in temperature. At radiation dose up to 0.1 MGy, thermal conductivities of shielding materials were not affected. The thermal expansion coefficients of the shielding materials of KNS-301 and 302 were affected to a less extent than those of KNS-201 and 202 by radiation. At radiation dose up to 0.1 MGy, the tensile strength, compressive strength and flexural strength of the shielding materials of KNS-202 and KNS-301 and 302 increased with the radiation dose. In contrast, those of KNS-201 decreased with an increase in the radiation dose. In addition, the amount of radiation dose on the shielding materials did not result in a measurable loss of specific gravity, weight and hydrogen content.

In this work, modified epoxy resins which were well melted in mild solvent were synthesized and solubility assessment was carried out for synthesized epoxy resins. Bisphenol-A type, phenol novolac type and ortho-cresol novolac type epoxy resins were used and fatty acid, dodecyl phenol (DP) and toluene diisocyanate (TDI) were added for synthesis of modified epoxy resins containing fatty acid (MEFA). Composition was epoxy resin/fatty acid = 1.0/0.5 and fatty acid/DP = 0.25/0.25 by equivalent weight and twelve MEFAs were synthesized according to epoxy resins. Viscosity and solubility were measured for twelve MEFAs. As a result, solubility of MEFA was excellent for mild solvent according to increasement of contents of benzene ring, glycidyl group and carbon number of alkyl group. And physical properties were measured for each coating of paints after preparing transparent paints of MEFA to melt well in mild solvent among twelve MEFAs. As a result, they showed an optimal performance on conditions of equivalent ratio of bisphenol-A type epoxy resin/fatty acid/DP/TDI; 1.0/0.25/0.25/0.5 and equivalent ratio of phenol novolac type epoxy resin/fatty acid/DP; 1.0/0.25/0.25 for drying time, adhesion, hardness, impact resistance and alkali resistance.
An adhesive can be used to connect two different materials in structures. In comparing with other connecting methods, such as bolt, rivet, and hot melting, the adhesive does not need to use them. It leads to reduce the weight and decrease the stress concentration along the connecting line. This work studied the comparison of mechanical and interfacial properties of commonly-used two adhesives, acrylic type and bisphenol-A epoxy type. Tensile and flexural strength of neat adhesives were also compared. Lap shear test of two adhesives was deduced from the measurement of tensile and fatigue tests. After testing, the failure patterns of adhesive surfaces were observed by a microscope. Tensile strength and mechanical fatigue resistance at using bisphenol-A epoxy adhesive were better than acrylic adhesive. Also adding CNT reinforcement in epoxy adhesive can anticipate mechanical improvement.
