  • The BNWF (Beam on Nonlinear Winkler Foundation) model is one of the simplest idealizations for a pile embedded in soil as it ignores the continuity of the soil. This method is difficult to model the behavior of pile group foundation subjected to lateral loading. The limitation can be overcome with the utilization of the finite element method (FEM) or finite different method (FDM) to represent a pile element embedded in a soil medium. Both the ground and piles are modeled with soild elements. The solid elements, which do not have rotational degree of freedom, is not appropriate for modeling piles. It can be overcome by substantially increasing the number of elements, which can be prohibitive for 3D modeling. This paper used the beam element and rigid link incorporated in the OpenSees to model the pile. The accuracy of the model is validated through comparison with lateral load test and BNWF analysis. It is shown that the method can capture the measured behavior accurately. It is therefore recommended to be used in group pile analyses.

  • In the present work, a linear static analysis is presented for thin-walled prismatic box-beams made of generally anisotropic materials. A mixed beam theory has been used to model and carry out the analysis. Several different constitutive assumptions for the shell-wall of the beam section are assessed into the beam formulation. Simple layup cases of box-beams representing bending-torsion or extension-torsion coupled configuration have been considered and tested to clearly show the effects of elastic couplings of the beam. A detailed finite element structural analysis using the MSC/NASTRAN has been carried out to validate the current analytical results. Numerical results show that appropriate assumptions for the constitutive relations are important and crucial for the accurate prediction of beam stiffness constants and also thor the beam behavior.

  • A wind turbine simulation program for the coupled dynamics of aerodynamics, elasticity, multi-body dynamics and controls of turbine is newly developed by combining an aero-elastic code and a multi-body dynamics code. The aero-elastic code, based on the blade momentum theory and generalized dynamic wake theory, is developed by NREL(National Renewable Energy Laboratory, USA). The multi-body dynamics code is commercial one which is capable of accounting for geometric nonlinearity and twist deflection. A turbulent wind load case is simulated for the NREL 5-MW baseline wind turbine model by the developed program and FAST. As a result, the two results agree well enough to verify the reliability of the developed program.

  • For many decades, the railway was constructed using tracks with jointed rails of relatively short lengths. The joints cause many drawbacks in the track and lead to signeficant maintenance cost. so, railroad engineers became interested in eliminating joints. Continuous welded rail(CWR) track has many advantages over the conventional jointed-rail track. but, in the case of the elimination of rail joints, it may cause the track to be suddenly buckled laterally by thermal loads. In this paper, firstly, 3-D CWR track model and CWRB program exactly considering the influence of tie are developed far linear static and buckling analysis using finite element method. Characteristics of CWR track model are using 7-dofs beam element as rail, Offset technic exactly considering centroid axies difference of track components(rail, rail-pad-fastener, tie), and Thermal gradient considering thermal difference of top flange and bottom flange in rail section.. second,, Through the static and linear buckling analysis by CWRB, Influences of various track components (rail, ballast, fastener, tie and so on..) on CWR track behavior and stability was characterized.

  • Low-velocity impact on composite sandwich panel has been investigated. Contact force is computed from a proposed modified Hertzian contact law. The Hertzian contact law is constructed by adjusting numerical value of the exponent and reducing the through-the- thickness elastic constant of honeycomb core. The equivalent transverse elastic constant is calculated from the rule of mixture. Nonlinear equation to calculate the contact force is solved by the Newton-Raphson method and time integration is done by the Newmark-beta method. A finite element program for the low-velocity impact analysis is coded by implementing these techniques and an 18-node assumed strain solid element. Behaviors of composite sandwich panels subjected to low-velocity impact are analyzed for various cases with different geometry and lay-ups. It has been found that the present code with the proposed contact law can predict measured contact forces and contact times for most cases within reasonable error bounds.

  • In this study, several Soil-Structure-Interaction (SSI) analyses were performed using the developed FE-BE coupling method and the seismic response behavior of the structure's systems was determined. For the verification of the fundamental solution which is used in this analysis method, a dynamic analysis of the homogeneous ground was performed and it was compared to the results of Estorff et al. In order to verify the seismic response analysis, the results are compared with those of another commercial code. Several kindd of SSI analyses were performed and the seismic response associated with the rile foundation, seismic waves and a consideration of the ground nonlinearity were determined. As a result, it was found that the pile foundations didn't greatly helpful during the seismic event.

  • This paper investigates inelastic lateral-torsional buckling of stepped beams subjected to uniformly distributed load and end moments. A three-dimensional finite-element program ABAQUS (2007) and a regression program MINITAB(2006) were used to analytically develop new design equation for singly and doubly stepped beams with simple boundary condition. The flanges of the smaller cross-section in the stepped beams were fixed at 30.48 by 2.54 cm, whereas the width and thickness of the flanges of the larger cross-section varied. The web thickness and height of the beams were kept at 1.65 cm and 88.9 cm, respectively. The ratios of the flange thickness, flange width, and stepped length of beam are considered with analytical parameters. Two groups of 27 cases and 36 cases, respectively, were analyzed for doubly and singly stepped beams in the inelastic buckling range. The combined effects of residual stresses and geometrical imperfection on inelastic lateral-torsional buckling of beams are considered. The distributions of residual stress of the cross-section is same as shown in Pi and Trahair (1995) and the initial geometric imperfection of the beam is set by central displacement equal to 0.1% of the unbraced length of beam. The comparisons between results from proposed equations and the results from finite element analyses were presented in this paper. The maximum differences of two results are of 13% for the doubly stepped beam and 10% for the singly stepped beam. The proposed equations definitely improve current design methods for the inelastic lateral-torsional buckling problem and increase efficiency in building and bridge design.

  • The finite element method(FEM) was one of tools used to solve problem of previous Concrete Pavement and was applied to Korea Pavement Research Program Study. This study used the ABAQUS and the fortran analysis program to calculate the critical stress on jointed concrete pavement and compared and analyzed the results by using neural networks and linear regression model. In that case, which are not enough analysises by using FEM programs though many input variables, when the results of FEM with NN and linear regression models are compared, there are some differences. The other cases, which are reduced input variables and a lot of analysises each of them, results of Neural Networks(NN) and linear regression models are simulated to them of FEM. But, the result of NN is more exact than them of linear regression at the (0,0), (1,1). On the results of this study, it is suggested that the calculation of stress using NN is more compatible to Korea Pavement Research Program Study.

  • Recently, in the domestic amount of materials, curtailment and economic efficiency security by purpose, tapered beam application is achieved, but the architectural design technology of today based on the material non-linear method does not consider solutions to problems such as brittle fracture. So, geometric non-linear evaluation thatincludes initial deformation, width-thickness ratio, web stiffener and unbraced length is required. Therefore, in this study, we used ANSYS, a proven finite elementanalysis program, and material and geometric non-linear analysis to study existing and completed tapered H-section as deep beam's analysis model. Main parameters include the width-thickness ratio of web, stiffener, and flange brace, with the experimental result obtained by main variable buckling and limit strength evaluation. We made certain that a large width-thickness ratio of the web decreases the buckling strength and short unbraced web significantly improves ductility.
