  • A UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) flies along pre-programed navigation points(in-flight, take-off, or landing) automatically without pilot input. Even though UAVs fly differently from general piloted aircraft as the pilot controls the aircraft from a ground station through means of a data-link system. Occasionally, the data-link connection can be lost for any number of reasons, in which case, the FLCC(Flight control Computer) must automatically switch to autopilot to continue flying. Hence, the FLCC is a flight-critical component that must be throughly tested and validated. This paper discusses the development of a HILS(Hardware in the Loop Simulation) test environment designed to simulate real flight conditions to verify the FLCC satisfies flying quality requirements and maintains robustness despite any potential malfunctions or emergency situations.

  • During normal subway rush hours, a train-driver is in charge of more than 3,000 people on a daily basis. When an emergency event occurs, millions of people and their property come to depend only on the train-driver's ability. After the Daegu subway fire disaster in February 2003, the Railway Safety Act was enacted in October 2004 and the 'Train Drivers' Licensing System' was introduced by the National Railroad Administration in July 2006 to secure and improve protection. This study was conducted to investigate and evaluate the effects of the Train Drivers' Licensing System since the Licensing System was first introduced eight years ago. In addition, the analysis will suggest better policies for the effectiveness of the 'Train Drivers' Licensing System'.

  • Most of military supersonic aircraft use an afterburner. It plays an important role in performing unusual duties for supersonic flight, takeoff, and combat situations. Recently, repetitive fuel leakage from the inner piston packing rubber of afterburner fuel pump in an aircraft J85-GE-21 turbojet engine has happened. These failures have only happened in one manufacturer's parts of two manufacturers. Thus, the cause of these failures was investigated through the comparative analysis for both the failed and the unfailed with two different manufacturers using various analysis methods. The failure analysis was performed using analysis methods such as swelling or swelling ratio, total sulfur content, polymer identification, loading and surface area of carbon black, and hardness. Consequently, the main cause of this failure was identified to be insufficient loading of carbon black as a reinforcing agent, together with small surface area of carbon black and somewhat low sulfur content.

  • This paper presents simulations of advance evacuation analysis using a cellular automata model for passenger behavior in an emergency of passenger ship. The proposed cellular automata model divides the space in a uniform grid called "cell." Each passenger is located in a cell and moves to another cell according to a set of local rules assumed to be associated with the individual and crowd behaviors of the passengers. To verify the usefulness of the proposed cellular automata model, 11 tests, all of which are specified in International Maritime Organization Maritime Safety Committee/ Circulation 1238 (IMO MSC/Circ. 1238), were implemented, and it was confirmed that all the requirements of these tests had been met.

  • With the ever increasing demand for data communication methods, powerline communication has become in interesting alternative method for data communication in home networking. For the purpose of home safety, several sensors will be installed at door, windows, gas alarm, etc. When considering home networking, the sensor data as well as other types of data should be supported in powerline communication. Usually the sensor data do not have priority over isochronous traffics (voice, video traffic), but in the case of urgent situation at home, the data of sensor being aware of the situation should be transmitted earlier than others. The objective in this paper is to develop a method for supporting an urgent data in home networking using powerline communication. We propose a modified algorithm of HomePlug 1.0 and show the results of computer simulation.

  • Plans of underground roads have been established, and the possibilities of underground road constructions have been growing in Korea. However, the study on characteristics of underground roads, the enactment of law, and the establishment of design criteria haven't been conducted so far, if any. Based on these backgrounds, the paper presents the basic direction on the construction method of underground roads. It also investigates the needs and characteristics of underground roads and reviews domestic and foreign examples. Major results by implementing the research are as follows: 1) when selecting the route of underground roads, the use of underground space, technical aspects, and traffic systems should be comprehensively considered; 2) the design speed of underground roads will be 10km/h above the speed limit to secure safety; 3) disaster prevention facilities should be planned to connect high traffic management system for coping with unexpected situations. Although this study has a limitation that hasn't reflected the driver's characteristics on new spaces such as underground roads, it has some significance that it suggests the major reviewing issues on the construction of underground roads, and presents the direction through the previous study.

  • Recently in Korea, in order to ensure evacuation safety within buildings, reviewing and evacuation assessment using computer simulations has been performed from the planning and design stages. Since the results from the assessment mainly depends on the initial values of input elements, it is important to establish element specific data. Nevertheless evacuation related experiments and research are still insufficient to apply overseas standards to domestic conditions. This study intended to conduct a experiment on evacuation movement speed by age as part of element-specific data construction for domestic occupant movement speed. After analyzing domestic and overseas studies on evacuation movement speed, we conducted the experiment of evacuation movement speed for 134 people. Then, by carrying out a comparative analysis of the results of the movement speed obtained from the experiment with overseas movement speeds, we followed the validation procedures of the experimental results under domestic evacuation conditions. The data derived from the experiment is expected to serve as a basis for the movement speed of domestic evacuation safety assessment.
