  • This paper suggests a modified bond reduction coefficient considering the average CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) strain concept for the unbonded prestressed CFRP plate strengthening system. The strengthened length and the pure bending length were seen to influence the variation of the strain of unbonded CFRP plate. Therefore, a new bond reduction coefficient considering such effect was suggested. Comparison with the experimental data revealed that the analytic results obtained by considering the proposed bond reduction coefficient were effective in estimating the strain of the unbonded CFRP plate in the CFRP plate prestressing system.

  • Recently, the prestressed unbonded concrete structures are increasingly being built. The mechanical behavior of prestressed concrete beams with unbonded tendon is different from that of normal bonded PSC beams in that the increment of tendon stress was derived by whole member behavior. The purpose of the present paper is therefore to evaluate the flexural behavior and to propose the equation of ultimate tendon stress by performing static flexural test according to span/depth, concrete compression strength, reinforcement ratio and the effect of existing bonded tendon. From experimental results, for cracking, yielding and ultimate load, the effect of reinforcement ratio was more effective than concrete compression strength, and the beams having high strength concrete had a good performance than having low concrete, but there was no difference between high strength and low strength. And as L/dp was larger, test beams had a long region of ductility. This means that unbonded tendon has a large contribution after reinforcement yielding. Especially, the equation of ACI-318 was not match with test results and had no correlations. After analysis of test results, the equation of ultimate unbonded tendon stress without slip was proposed, and the proposed equation was well matched with test results. So the proposed equation in this paper will be a effective basis for the evaluation of unbonded tendons without slip, analysis and design.

  • The purpose of this paper was to investigate the relations between the unbonded tendon stress and the influential parameters which were bonded reinforcement ratio, span/depth ratio, and loading type. To this end, first, the influence of parameters were examined with twenty eight test results obtained from references. Then, an experimental study was carried out with 21 test specimens. The investigation with previous and current tests revealed the followings; (1) The bonded reinforcement ratio and prestressing ratio were proved to be an important variables on the unbonded tendon stress. (2) The ratio of span to depth and type of loading affected partially the unbonded tendon stress although their effects varied depending on bonded reinforcement ratio. (3) AASHTO LRFD Code and Moon/Lim\`s design equation predicted the test results well with some safety margins.

  • This paper analyzed seventy eight previous test results to evaluate bond strength of Near Surface-Mounted (NSM) FRP and prediction formulas previously proposed by researchers. The results showed that the most reliable bond strength prediction was the one proposed by Seracino, who considered the shape coefficient (ratio of width-thickness) and stiffness of FRP. However, the equation tended to underestimate the bond strength, especially serious when FRP bond length was relatively short, because the equation did not consider the effect of bond length. Based on the analysis of previous test results, the relation between bond length and bond strength and the group effect due to close proximity of FRPs were determined. Based on the findings, the Seracino's formula was modified and it's applicability was evaluated. The result showed that the suggested formula can be used effectively to predict the bond strength of NSM FRP.

  • It is quite difficult to predict the flexural strength of post-tensioned members with unbonded tendons (unbonded posttensioned members, UPT members) because of debonding behavior between concrete and prestressing tendons, which is different from that with bonded tendons. Despite many previous researches, our understanding on the flexural strength of UPT members is still insufficient, and thus, national codes use different methods to calculate the strength, which quite often give very different results. Therefore, this paper reviews various existing methods, and aims at proposing an improved rational strength model for UPT flexural members having better accuracy. Additionally, a database containing a large number of test data on UPT flexural members has been established and used for verification of the proposed flexural strength model. The analysis results show that the proposed method provides much better accuracy than many existing methods including the rigid-body model that utilizes the assumption of concentrated deformation and plastic hinge length, and that it also gives proper consideration on the effects of primary parameters such as reinforcement ratio, loading pattern, concrete strength, etc. Especially, the proposed method also well predicts the ultimate stress of unbonded tendons of over-reinforced members, which are often possible in construction fields, and high strength concrete members.

  • A high flow critical heat flux (CHF) correlation, based on the single-pin CHF experimental data for finned and unfinned heated rods, was developed for the thermal-hydraulic design and safety analysis of the Korea Multi-purpose Research Reactor (KMRR) core. The correlation consists of dimensionless parameters such as Reynolds number, thermodynamic equilibrium quality, liquid-to-vapor density ratio, and hydraulic equivalent diameter ratio. The fin effect was taken into account in the correlation by a finned-to-unfinned heated perimeter ratio. The effects of a cold wall and non-uniform axial power distribution ore discussed to verify the applicability of the single-pin based correlation to the KMRR fuel bundle. The correlation limit departure from nucleate boiling ratio (DNBR) was determined as 1.44 from the statistical analysis of the CHF data.

  • A feasibility study for nondestructively estimating prestress force of a grouted tendon using axial vibrations has been investigated. Total eight prestressed concrete beams with different stress levels have been specially designed and constructed for this investigation. The various axial vibration tests have been conducted in order to extract the dynamic characteristics of the prestressed concrete beams. It turns out that the axial frequency, elastic wave velocity and elastic modulus are nonlinearly increased as the prestress force level increases. It seems that the axial vibration characteristics of the existing grouted tendons are a feasible indicator for the identification of their tensile force.
