This paper describes a technique for detecting the boundary of the optic disk in digital image of the retina using inward and outward curve evolution. Optic disk boundary offers medical information about glaucoma progresses. For accurate boundary detection, image inpainting based on PDE removes blood vessels crossing the optic disk. For removing noises and preserving boundary of optic disk in image inpainting process, the anisotropic diffusion filtering is developed. After pre-processing, the optic disk boundary is determined using inward and outward curve evolution. Experimental results show that blurring effect of original region and optic disk boundary is reduced considerably. By the proposed method, we can detect correct disk boundary compare to conventional method.

This study is to segment white matter, gray matter, and cerebrospinal fluid(CSF) on a brain MR image and to calculate the volume of each. First, after removing the background on a brain MR image, we segmented the whole region of a brain from a skull and a fat layer. Then, we calculated the partial volume of each component, which was present in scanning finite thickness, with the arithmetical analysis of gray value from the internal region of a brain showing the blurring effects on the basis of the MR image forming principle. Calculated partial volumes of white matter, gray matter and CSF were used to determine the threshold for the segmentation of each component on a brain MR image showing the blurring effects. Finally, the volumes of segmented white matter, gray matter, and CSF were calculated. The result of this study can be used as the objective diagnostic method to determine the degree of brain atrophy of patients who have neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and cerebral palsy.

There are lots of industrial machines of which functions are achieved by operation of multi-phase fluids. Some of them take advantage of the characteristics of counter-current two-phase flow The maximum flow rates of gas and liquid phases which flow in opposite-directions (counter-current flow) are limited by a phenomenon known as a Counter-Current Flow Limitation (CCFL or Flooding) The mass and momentum conservation equations for each Phase were established to build a first-order hyperbolic partial derivative equations system. A new CCFL model is developed based on the characteristic equation of the hyperbolic PDE system. The present model has its applicationto the case in which a non-uniform flow is developed around a square or sharp-edged entrance of liquid phase. The model is able to he used to Predict the operating-limit of components in which mass and heat transfer are taking place between liquid and gas phases.

The behavior of polystyrene in the strip cavity during the packing and cooling stages for an injection molding process is examined numerically. The mathematical model is based on the unified post-filling model and finite element/finite difference methods are used to solve simultaneously the continuity, momentum and energy equations coupled to an equation of state. Simulated results show that the density of the molded parts is lower in the core than at the skin, and that the hotter the melt or the higher the packing pressure, the higher the density in the core. The density variation during the packing stage comes up to 50% compared with the total density variation. Also, the density variation after gate sealing and the effect of cooling rate on the equation of state are negligible.

Transport phenomena of reactant and product are directly linked to intrinsic inhomogeneous random configurations of catalyst layer (CL) that consist of ionomer, carbon-supported catalyst (Pt/C), and pores. Hence, electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) of Pt/C is dominated by geometrical morphology of mass transport path. Undoubtedly these ECSAs are key factor of total fuel cell efficiency. In this study, non-deterministic micro-scale CLs were randomly generated by Monte Carlo method and implemented with the percolation process. To ensure valid inference about Pt/C catalyst utilization, 600 samples were chosen as the number of necessary samples with 95% confidence level. Statistic results of 600 samples generated under particular condition (20vol% Pt/C, 30vol% ionomer, 50vol% pore, and 20nm particle diameter) reveal only 18.2%~81.0% of Pt/C can construct ECSAs with mean value of 53.8%. This study indicates that the catalyst utilization in fuel cell CLs cannot be identical notwithstanding the same design condition.

The steam generator water level is difficult to control at low power due to its reversed responses to the feedwater flow, which are well known as the shrink and swell phenomena. With regard to this problem a new control scheme has been studied by which the level transients could be kept within permissible ranges at low power. The relations between the various input conditions to steam generator and the level transients have been examined to be expressed in the form of process transfer functions. Analog filters have been incorporated to be expressed in the process with proper control constants. This control scheme allows the prediction of level variation together with the corresponding feedwater rate and results in mider transients with good stabilites.
Augmentation of CHF by ultrasonic vibration in water pool is experimentally investigated under pool boiling condition. The experiments are carried out using copper coated plates and distilled water. Measurements of CHF on flat plate heated surface were made with and without ultrasonic wave and with variations in inclined angle of the surface and water subcooling. Experimental apparatus consists of a bath, power supply, test section, ultrasonic generator, and data acquisition system. The measurements show that ultrasonic wave enhances CHF and its extent is dependent upon inclination angle as well as water subcooling. The rate of increase in CHF increases with an increase in water subcooling while it decreases with an increase in inclination angle. Visual observation shows that the cause of CHF augmentation is closely related with the dynamic behavior of bubble generation and departure in acoustic field.

As the electronic industry rapidly develops, the heat flux from state-of-the-art electronics increases up to $10^6\;W/m^2$. For this reason, the development of a new cooling technology for high heat flux applications is strongly required. Recently, some cooling technologies using boiling and condensation of working fluid are being adopted to overcome such a technical barrier. In the present study, a smooth boiling surface ($14{\times}14\;mm^2$) was immersed in FC-72 and its vapor was condensed by four different types of condensation surfaces ($30{\times}30\;mm^2$ base). The condensing surfaces were composed of a smooth surface and $1{\times}1\;mm^2$ pin-finned surfaces of 2 mm height with 0.3, 0.5 and 1 mm array spacing. Boiling and condensing characteristics were investigated in detail on their combinations of boiling and condensing surfaces. For a smooth boiling surface the results obtained showed that the pin-finned condensing surface with 1 mm array spacing yielded the best performance and the smooth condensation surface did the worst. Furthermore hysteresis phenomena could be reduced by using enhanced condensing surfaces.
