  • Feeding habits of A. luridus were studied by analyzing the stomach contents of monthly collected fish from the intertidal zone of Dodun-ri, Sochon from July 1996 to June 1997. Fullness of stomach increased twice a day, first in the morning and second in the afternoon. A. luridus (1.2-5.9 em in standard length) was a carnivore consuming mainly decapods (natantia larvae, Acetes japonicus, Penaeus japonicus and reptantia larvae), amphipods (caprellids, gammarids and hyperiids) and copepods (Acartia sp., Calanus sinicus, Corycaeus affinis, and Microsetella sp.). Its diets also included minor quantities of isopods, cirriped larvae, polychaete larvae and stomatopods. According to fish size, some changes in feeding habits were apparent, i.e. smaller fish preferred to prey in the following order : copepods < decapods < amphipods. However, as the size increased, decapods and amphipods were selected.

  • We investigated the morphology of the scalp hair shaft from the base to the distal end of the newborn hair and the ratio of the longitudinal axis diameter of the scale exposed to the surface of the hair to the diameter of the hair by scanning electron microscopy(SEM). Neonatal hair was observed to taper from the area adjacent to the scalp toward the end of the hair. In this study, as the thickness of the hair increases, the ratio of the long axis diameter of the exposed scale becomes relatively small, but the long axis diameter of the exposed scale on the surface of the hair is similar in length regardless of the thickness of the hair. In conclusion, it was confirmed that the major axis diameter of the scales exposed to the surface of fine or thick hair does not change significantly.

  • This study was performed to obtain basal data for development of new functional food by using mushroom Pholiota spp.. Among several kinds of extracts, water extracts of Pholiota adiposa ASI 24027 showed the highest solid yield of 58.7%. Crude protein of Pholiota adiposa ASI 24015 and ${\beta}$-glucan contents of Pholiota adiposa ASI 24005 were 25.0% and 0.66%, respectively. K and Mg were also contained plentifully in the fruiting body of Pholiota adiposa ASI 24004 (3,649 mg and 138 mg/100g dried fruiting body, respectively). Amino acid and total fatty acid contents were similar between almost all of Pholiota spp..

  • A single specimen (52.5 mm SL) of Neoclinus chihiroe, belonging to the family Chaenopsidae, was firstly collected from Dokdo, East Sea of Korea on 9 December 2020. This species was characterized by a black spot between the first and the second dorsal spines, and a black spot on upper part of opercular membrane. The species was morphologically similar to N. okazakii, but distinctly distinguished by pectoral fin base without a black dot. This study documents the first record of N. chihiroe in Korean waters and suggests the new Korean name 'Dong-hae-bi-neul-be-do-la-chi' for the species.

  • Results comparing the scale and otolith ages for walleye pollock from the Donut Hole of the Bering Sea showed a significant discrepancy for fish older than 8 years old. For walleye pollock from the Shelikof Strait of the Gulf of Alaska, comparison between ages determined from the scale and otolith readings indicated that there were no differences for younger age groups, but for the ages 6 and older, discrepancies squeezed in somewhat amid the same age groups.

  • To clarify the ants fauna in 10 islands, Chollanam-do, field survery was carried out from 1986 to 1991. As a result, 740 colonies were collected in 31 survey areas. These colonies were composed on 54 species belonging to the 30 genera of 4 subfamilies. Kyidris mutica Brown and Epitritus hexamerus Brown collected in Taehuksan Is. and Soan Is. respectively were recorded for the first time from Korea. The cluster analysis of faunal similarity using Nomura-Simpson's Coefficient(NSC) showed that the ant communities between the island were continuous in similarities.

  • We described the scale characteristics of induced hybrids between female red seabream (Pagrus major Temminck et Schlegel) and male black seabream (Acanthopagrus schlegelii Bleeker), and of their parental species. The external scalar morphology of induced hybrids showed intermediate characters compared to those of the parental species. The mean number of primary apical grooves and lateral line scales was $10.5{\pm}2.6$ and $49.5{\pm}0.5$, respectively, in induced hybrids, which also showed intermediate meristic characters compared to those of the parental species (P<0.01). The meristic characters used in this study may be useful parameters for the identification of genotypes of these seabream species.

  • The feeding habits of spearnose grenadier (Coelorinchus multispinulosus) were studied using 361 specimens collected from January to December 2005~2006 in the coastal waters off Gori, Korea. The size of C. multispinulosus ranged from 1.5 to 8.5 cm in anal length (AL). C. multispinulosus was crustacean feeder that consumes mainly consumed shrimps and amphipods. Its diet also included small quantities of copepods, mysids, cumaceans, stomatopods, crabs, polychaetes and fishes. C. multispinulosus mainly consumed shrimps in all size classes and seasons except the smallest size class in summer which mainly consumed amphipods. Smaller individuals secondly consumed amphipods, copepods and mysids, and the portion of these prey items in the total diet decreased as body size.

  • This study applied a bleaching agent. which is commonly used in the beauty salons, to the hair of normal adult women, collected the hair immediately and 10 days and 20 days from the bleaching, were investigated the degree of degradation of the hair by using scanning and transmission electron microscopes. The surface of hair just after bleaching was observed to be similar to that of normal hair, showing no split or damage of scale. In the hair of 10 days after bleaching, however, the scale came off. From this time, scale on the cuticular layer of hair began to be separated. In 10 days from bleaching, the scale on the cuticular layer was separated from hair and some cytoplasm of cuticular cells was broken into pieces or fell off. The cell remains made the surface coarse and uneven. At this period, damaged scales had a sharp end. In the hair of 20 days after bleaching, scale fell off from the whole surface of the hair and the surface looked rough. On the bleached hair, many vacuoles were formed in the endocuticle of cuticular cells. As a result, deformation caused by the formation of vacuoles in cuticles broke up the cuticular cells.
