  • In this study, we studied how to perform the structural analysis which need a large-capacity flash memory with the computer program when the flash memory storage of a personal computer has no enough room for the analysis of structure. As one of the solutions of this problem, the blocking method of stiffness matrix, which is a method that stiffness matrix is divided by a few blocks and each block is sequentially used for the calculation of matrix decomposition, is proposed and an algorithm available in computer program is derived on the method. Finally, A structural analysis program (sNs) based on this study is developed and the correctness and efficiency of the algorithm is founded through some examples which are fundamental in structural analysis.

  • Distinct element method is a powerful numerical tool for modelling the jointed rock masses. It is also a useful tool for modelling of later stage of blasting requiring large displacement. The distinct element method utilizes a rigid block idea in which the interacting force between distinct elements is calculated from contact displacement as elements penetrate slightly. The properties of joints defined as the boundaries of distinct elements are critical parameters to determine the block behavior, and affect the deformation and failure mode. However, regardless of real joint properties, joint stiffnesses have sometimes been selected without special concern just to prevent elements from penetrating too far into each other in some quasi-static problems. Depending on whether the main interest in the analysis is the prediction of the deformation with high precision, or the prediction of the block behaviour after failure, the input data such as joint stiffness may or may not have a significant effect on the results. The purpose of this study is to provide a sound understanding of the effect of the joint stiffness on the distinct element analysis results, and to help guide the selection of input data.

  • Overlap, excessive wide gaps, and errors between blocks during erection process increases cost and man-hour. In this paper, a system to simulate the assembly process is suggested and a plane block assembly of welding deformation with gravity is simulated in consideration of assembly order, deformations and errors occurring in the cutting and forming processes are not considered and welding deformations are acquired by equivalent stiffness and load method from experiments and hull double bottom plane block is assembled on a assembly order by panel method. It is certified that according to the order of assembly, intermediate product shape affects rigidity which affects welding deformations. Assembly order must be considered in the assembly process. It is certified that the gravity has important role in the assembly process.

  • In this paper, in order to reduce the power consumption of LCD TV, we present a two-dimensional dimming algorithm for LED BLU(Backlight Unit) using light spread function and a pragmatic implementation method. In conventional two dimensional dimming algorithms, LED BLU is divided into MxN blocks and proper backlight luminance for each block is computed according to input image and used for dimming control. But, LED light of each block is diffused and affects the neighboring blocks so that luminance of each block becomes larger than that of intent. In the proposed algorithm, dimming control values are reduced by the amount of quantity affected by the neighboring blocks using light spread function, resulting in additional reduction of power consumption.

  • This paper presents the results of an investigation on the effect of foundation stiffness on the performance of soil-reinforced segmental retaining walls (SRWalls). Laboratory model tests were performed using a reduced-scale physical model to capture the fundamentals of the manner in which the foundation stiffness affects the behavior of SRWalls. A series of finite-element analyses were additionally performed on a prototype wall in order to supplement the findings from the model tests and to examine full-scale behavior of SRWalls encountered in the field. The results of the present investigation indicate that lateral wall displacements significantly increase with the decrease of the foundation stiffness. Also revealed is that the increase in wall displacements is likely to be caused by the rigid body movement of the reinforced soil mass with negligible internal deformation within the reinforced soil mass. The findings from this study support the current design approaches, in which the problem concerning the foundation condition are treated in the frame work of the external stability rather than the internal stability. The implications of the findings from this study to current design approaches are discussed in detail.
