  • The transient thermoelastic analysis of automotive disk brakes with frictional contact is performed by using the finite element method. To analyze the thermoelastic behaviors occurring in disk brakes, the coupled heat conduction and elastic equations are solved. The fully implicit transient scheme is used to improve the computation accuracy at every time step. The numerical results of the thermoelastic behaviors are obtained during the repeated braking condition. The computational results show that the thermoelastic instability(TEI) phenomenon(the growth of non-uniformities in contact pressure) occurs in disk brakes. Also, the effect of material properties on the thermoelastic behaviors is investigated to facilitate the conceptual design of the brake system.

  • In general, a brake system of axle for heavy duty machine as a wheel excavator makes use of wettype multiple disk brakes. These disk bakes are very important parts of heavy duty machine because they are dvanced in durability and braking power, and can be designed compactly. Thus, we adesigned and made wettype multiple disk brakes of axle for the wheel excavator to be localization of these imported all. In this study, wet multiple disk brakes were made a comparative test with the 3 types materials of friction disk by the SAE No.2 dynamometer. The friction characteristics were measured and analyzed to decide a suitable material as wear depth of friction disk and dynamic and static friction coefficient on temperature of oil and applied pressure.

  • Weight reduction for an automobile component has been sought to achieve fuel efficiency and energy conservation. In response to this trend, a new disc-brake called the circumferential friction disc-brake is suggested. This paper compares the mechanical performances of a conventional disc-brake and a suggested disc-brake, under the dynamic braking condition. The thermoelastic instability is considered to simulate the test condition. Furthermore, the metamodel using kriging interpolation method is introduced to obtain the optimum design of a suggested circumferential friction disc-brake. The design results obtained by the kriging method are compared with those obtained by the ANSYS.

  • Generally, most of optimization have been performed with fixed sizes and variables. But, the optimum value considering tolerance of design variables and material properties, might be useless owing to exist in infeasible region. It is needed that the tolerance of design variables and material properties is considered for a real design problem. A deterministic optimal solution can be in the feasible region by performing robust optimization considering tolerance. In the paper, robust design is suggested to gain an optimum insensitive to variation of design variables and it is applied for optimization problem of caliper disc brakes for vehicles.

  • Disc brake squeal is caused by mechanical vibrations generated from friction force excitations exerted by the pad on the rotor. In order to understand the origin of these vibrations and to speed up the design, the characterization of the individual brake system components is desirable. In this paper, the results of modal analysis are presented in terms of several slot-type with free-free boundary conditions. Special attention is paid to variations of the natural frequency at each vibration mode as the result of modifying slot pattern.

  • A ventilated disc brake having semi-cylindrical grooves has been proposed to improve the thermal judder by way of heat transfer enhancement. The local heat transfer coefficients were measured in the flow passage of disc brake. These measured local heat transfer data were utilized to do the finite element numerical analysis which predicts the maximum temperatures on the disc brake. The results show that the maximum temperatures on the disc surface with semi-cylindrical grooves are approximately 35.2% lower than those without them.

  • The paper presents the dynamic instability of a disc brake pad subjected to distributed friction forces. A brake pad can be modeled as a beam with two translational springs. The study of this prototypical model is intended to provide a fundamental understanding of disc brake pad instabilities. Governing equations of motion are derived form energy expressions and their corresponding solutions are obtained by employing the finite element method. The critical distributed friction force and the instability regions are demonstrated by changing two translational spring constants. Finally, the changes of eigen-frequencies of a beam determining instability types are investigated for various combinations of two spring constants.

  • Braking system is directly related to the safety of a vehicle and the brake discs are essential part of the braking system. Due to the repeated frictional forces and torque during braking, brake discs are always works at high temperature and high pressure. Furthermore, the brake disc is one of major tuning components in aftermarket, the braking performance of the brake disc should be evaluated for establishing the certification standards of tuning components. This paper proposes the test method to evaluate the performance of tuning brake discs.

  • During braking operation, the surfaces of disk have severe contact conditions and high frictional heat would be generated between disk and pad surfaces. The heat makes high temperature gradient on disk surfaces and results in thermal deformation. To enhance the frictional heat dissipation, heat pipes are embedded in the ventilated type disk along the radial direction. The temperatures of the inner vent type disk and the brake disk with heat pipes are compared at the same operating conditions. By comparison a brake disk with heat pipes has higher cooling performance than the inner vent type disk.

  • Disc brakes and brake linings are part of the braking system in automobiles; this system works due to the braking power between the disc and pad. Vehicle braking systems have complex environments due to the geometry of the disk and pad, the material properties, the braking conditions, etc. Braking energy is converted into thermal energy during the braking process, due to the frictional heat between the disc brake and pad. This heat is changed to a heat flux, which affects the thermal stress of the disc. The purpose of this study was to use the fluid dynamics software ANSYS CFX to investigate the inner flow characteristics of the air and the heat transfer of the disc, and to analyze the effects on the thermal stress of the disc brake.
