  • In this study, the combustion characteristics of Hinoki Cypress Louver were measured after performing pressure impregnation with aqueous solution of boric acid, borax, and ammonium phosphate. The characteristics measured include ignition time, critical heat flux, and mass loss rate by incident hear flux (25, 30 and $50kW/m^2$). The samples used for the test were $100{\times}100{\times}10mm$, and the 5 min variation for each incident heat flux was measured 3 times. The results show that the ignition time for incident heat flux of $25kW/m^2$ showed a delay effect of 17.4 to 21.3% except for Type C-H. There was no significant difference at 35 and $50kW/m^2$ in the average mass loss rate in Types A-H and D-H, which had lower rates than Type N-H, which was predicted to be higher than that of Type N-H ($10.7kW/m^2$) by 38.22 to 60.46%. It is thus expected that at the time of initial primary fire, there would be a delay effect against fire spread.

  • Soaking treated in 20% aqueous solutions of $(NH_4)_2SO_4$, $NH_4H_2PO_4$, $(NH_4)_2HPO_4$, $Na_2B_4O_7-H_3BO_3$(60:40) and Minalith, the mixed salts for 9 hrs. the wet 3.5mm meranti (Parashorea spp.) plywoods were press-dried at 90, 120 and $150^{\circ}C$ and put to static bending test to examine the influence of redrying temperature on the strength of fire-retardant treated plywoods ill flexure. While water-soaking treatment (control) showed serious reduction in Stress at proportional limit, MOE, MOR, Work per unit volume at $150^{\circ}C$, all the fire-retardant treatments maintained bending strength even at $150^{\circ}C$ and showed rather increased values in case of some chemicals. In view of drying rate and maintenance of strength, the most pertinent platen temperature was $150^{\circ}C$ and Borax-Boric acid was the predominant fire-retardant in this study.

  • This study examines the characteristics of mortar mixed with various boron compounds. The adapted boron compounds, classified into acid, slightly alkaline and strongly alkaline with respect to the value of the pH are acid-based boron (AA), low-alkaline-based boron (AB), and high-alkaline-based boron (HB). The pH test, setting test and compressive strength test are performed to evaluate the physical and chemical properties of mortar, and SEM imaging is conducted to analyze the microstructure of mortar. The measured pH shows that the specimens mixed with boron compounds have lower pH than the basic mortar without boron and that loss of pH occurs according to time. The setting test reveals that the initial and final setting times of the specimens mixed with boron compounds occur later than the basic mortar, which disagrees slightly with the previous literature stating that the setting time can be shortened according to the alkalinity. From the compressive strength test and SEM imaging results, it is recommended to determine the optimal content of boron considering type and composition of the boron compounds.

  • Plywood used for construction as a decorative inner material is inflammable and can cause fire accidents. causing destruction of human life and property. To diminish the fire disaster, fire retardant plywood is indeed required. In the methods of manufacturing the fire retardant plywood, a soaking method is occasionally used. However after soaking plywood into fire retardant chemical solutions redrying of soaked plywood is of the utmost importance. In this study 3.5mm and 5.0mm thickness plywoods were selected for fire retardant treatment. Treating solutions were prepared for 20% dilute solutions of ammonium sulfate, monoammonium phosphate, diammonium phosphate, borax-boric acid minalith, and water solution, 1-, 3-, 6-, and 9 hour-soaking treatments in borax-boric acid and minalith, and 6- and 9 hours in the other chemicals were applied and after the treatment hot drying was applied to treated plywoods at $90^{\circ}C$, $120^{\circ}C$ and $150^{\circ}C$ of press temperature. Drying rates, drying curves, water absorption rates of fire retardant chemicals, weight per volume and fire retardant degree of plywood were investigated. The results may be summarized as follows: 1) In the 9 hours-soaking treatment of fire retardants by hot and cold bath method, the chemical retentions of 3.5mm thickness plywood could be attained within the range ($1.125-2.25kg/(30cm)^3$) of minimum retention specification as follows: $1.353kg/(30cm)^3$ in monoammonium phosphate, $1.331kg/(30cm)^3$ in diammonium phosphate, $1.263kg/(30cm)^3$ in ammonium sulfate, $1.226kg/(30cm)^3$ in borax-boric acid. But the chemical retention, $0.906kg/(30cm)^3$, in minalith could not be attained within the range of minimum retention specification. And also in case of 5.0mm thickness plywood, chemical retentions, as $1.356kg/(30cm)^3$ and $1.166kg/(30cm)^3$ respectively, of ammonium sulfate and diammonium phosphate could be attained within the range minimum retention specification, but the other fire retardant chemicals could not. 2) In the 6- and - hours-soaking treatments of 3.5mm and 5.0mm thickness plywood, the drying curve sloped of chemical treated plywood was smaller than that of water treated. The drying rate related to thickness of treated plywood, was about three times as fast in 3.5mm thickness plywood compared with 5.0mm thickness plywood. 3) In the treatment at $120^{\circ}C$ of hot platen temperature, the drying rates of chemical-treated plywood showed the highest quantity in diammonium phosphate of 3.5mm and 5.0mm thickness plywood. But the drying rate of water treated plywood was highest during the 6- and 9 hours-soaking treatments. 4) The drying rate remarkably increased with proportion to increase of the platen temperature, and the values were respectively 1.23%/min., 6.54%/min., 25.75%/min. in hot platen temperature of $90^{\circ}C$, $120^{\circ}C$, $150^{\circ}C$ in 3.5mm thickness plywood and 0.55%.min., 2.49%/min., 8.19%/min. in hot platen temperature of $90^{\circ}C$, $120^{\circ}C$, $150^{\circ}C$ in 5.0mm thickness plywood. 5) In the fire retardant degree of chemical treated plywood, the loss in weight was the smallest in diammonium phosphate, next was in monoammonium phosphate and ammonium sulfate, and the greatest was in borax-boric acid and minalith. And the fire-retardant effect in burning time, flame-exhausted time and carbonized area were greatest in diammouniun phosphate, next were in monoammonium phosphate and ammonium sulfate, and the weakest were in borax-boric acid and minalith.

  • The electrolytic boronizing on carbon steels in the mixture of $Na_2B_4O_7$ and NaCl was conducted at 750~$950^{\circ}C$ for 1~6 hours under 0.5A/$\textrm{cm}^2$ current density. The micorostructrure and microheredness of boronized layer was also studien. The effect of the additive such as $CaCl_2$ or NaOH on the formation of boronized layer was also investigated. The boronized layer were composed of two sublayers, i.e., FeB and $Fe_2B$ , which have tooth structure. the average layer thinknesses of the low carbon steel and SM45C boronized at $900^{\circ}C$ for 4hours were 153 and 138 $\mu\textrm{m}$, respectively. The thickness of the twosublayers was significantly increased with increasing boronizing temperature. To obtain a single $Fe_2B$ layer without FeB sublayer, the boronized materials ware homegenized at $950^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours. It was fount that the single layer with a microhardness Hv$\thickapprox$ 1120 -1250 was formed. The calculated activation energies for formation of boronized layer on the low carbon steel and SM45C were 18.7 and 12.6 Kcal/mol, respectively.

  • A study on adhesion and wear resistance of VC(vanadium carbide) coating on die steels, STD11 and STD61, has been carried out. The VC coating on the die steels was made by immersing them in molten borax bath, a kind of TRD(thermo-reactive deposition and diffusion). Adhesion strength and wear resistance were investigated using scratch test, indentation test and plate-disc test(Ogoshi type) respectively. The influence of sliding distance on the amount of wear has been determined and dominant wear mechanisms has been characterized using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and EDS spectroscopy. The critical adhesion strength($L_c$) between VC coating layer and substrate(STD11) was increased to 60N($L_c$) in the scratch test. In the case of STD61, the strength increased to 24N. The wear resistance of VC coated die steels was excellent because the diffusion layer formed just below the coating layer. The dominant wear mechanism was identified as adhesive wear for VC coating die steels which were worn by combination of cracking and plucking of VC fragments and disc.

  • A pot experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of boron on the growth, symptom, yield, and content of boron in Perilla(Perilla frutescens var. japonica HARA), Melon(Cucumis melo L.) and Cucumber(Cucumis sativus L.). The results obtained are as follows. Perilla. melon and cucumber uptake a lot of boron from the soil, and toxic effects of boron result in leaf tip yellowing by progressive necrosis. Yield of perilla, melon and cucumber are decreased at the $3{\sim}5mg\;kg^{-1}$, $5{\sim}10mg\;kg^{-1}$ of boron applicated in soil, respectively. Boron content in the leaf is the highest among various parts plant, and the tip and margin of the leaf contained more boron than central part of the leaf. Boron applicated was moved and accumulated to the plant and soil.

  • In an evacuated tube solar collector, the stable sealing of the heat pipe to the glass tube is important for the collector to use for a long period of time. The sealing of copper tube to the glass is quite difficult because of the large differences in the physical and chemical properties of the two materials. In this study, therefore, a proper copper oxide layer was induced to improve the chemical bonding of the two materials, and the oxidation state of copper and the interface between copper and glass were examined by XRD, SEM and EDS. Its bonding strength was also measured. Cu$_2$O was formed when the bare copper was heat-treated under 600$^{\circ}C$, while CuO oxide layer was formed above that temperature. The bonding state of CuO to the copper was very poor. The borate treatment of the copper, however, extend the stable forming of Cu$_2$O layer to 800$^{\circ}C$. Borosilicate glass tube was sealed to a copper tube by Housekeeper method only when the sealing part was covered with Cu$_2$O layer. The bonding strength at the interface was measured 354.4N, its thermal shock resistance was acceptable.

  • In order to investigate the change of physiological active compounds in buckwheat with soil chemical properties and soil conditioners, we cultured buckwheat at an experimental open field station, Chonnam Provincial Agicultual Reserch and Extension Service. Fatty acids, phenolic compounds and tyrosinase inhibitory activity (TIA) from buckwheat grains and plants were analyzed. The contents of fatty acids in buckwheat plants was less than that of buckwheat grain. The fatty acids of buckwheat plants and grains were composed of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. The contents of unsaturated fatty acids were more than saturated fatty acids. The phenolic compounds in buckwheat were from $682.6mg\;kg^{-1}$ to $1822mg\;kg^{-1}$. The phenolic compounds in buckwheat with addition of applied lime were $1822mg\;kg^{-1}$. It was higher than any other plot. The tyrosinase inhibitory activity (TIA) of sediment c in buckwheat grain with addition of applied lime was 92.8%. It was more than that of sediment a, b or compound A, B, C within the same treatment. But the TIA of compound C in buckwheat with application of borax was 81.0%. It was highest of all sediments and compounds within the same treatment.

  • Recent developments in architectural technologies and programs have enabled architects to think creatively and design free-form architecture. however, there are many problems in the production technology of FCP(Free-Form Concrete Panel). In particular, reduced accuracy due to lack of free-form panel production technology can lead to redesign of buildings as a result, problems such as an increase in construction cost and period. Therefore, this experiment aimed to compensate the decrease of the accuracy according to the displacement difference and to derive the proper mixing ratio for maintaining the shape during the free-form panel curing. In this study, molds were made using paraffin that is a recyclable phase change material. Concrete Panel is usually produced from Portland cement, dead burn magnesia, phosphate, borax and fine aggregate. In this study, four mixing ratios of FCP were selected after each material was blended to determine the proper blending ratio of the fluidity phase, the water absorption rate and the water content of the test piece. FCP was fabricated on the basis of the selected four compounding ratios and thickness and error rate were measured. Based on the error rate of the measured FCP, the quality standard was satisfied among the four compounding ratios.
