  • This study was to determine the efficacy in the remineralization on premary teeth following the application of toothpaste with and without sodium fluoride. All tooth were checked using microhardness tester and the calcium (Ca) and phosphorous (P) concentration by electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) analysis for the 4 weeks. The collected data was analysed using the statistical software program SPSS, 20.0. The applied enamel of premary teeth with 0.243% fluoridated toothpaste resulted in significant differences in the microhardness values (p>0.05). The Ca and P concentrations of applied premary teeth with fluoridated toothpaste were also significant difference in norm wt% (p>0.05). As a results, a increasing the surface microhardness of the premary teeth and providing a remineralizing effect by increased Ca and P concentrations.

  • The purpose of this paper is to review two recently reported, long-term studies of several chemical methods to control gingivitis and decalcification in adolescent orthodontic patients. The first study(gingivitis study) was designed to determine whether conventional toothbrushing and twice daily use of a brush-on 0.4 per cent $SnF_2$ gel containing more than 90 per cent available $Sn^{2+}$ would be more effective for controlling plaque accumulation and gingivitis in the presence of orthodontic appliances than conventional toothbrushing alone. The second study(decalcification study) was designed to compare the effectiveness of controlling decalcification in orthodontic patients with either a II00 ppm F tooth paste used alone, this same toothpaste and a 0.05 percent NaF rinse or this toothpaste and a 0.4 percent $SnF_2$ gel. In the gingivitis study, sixty-five consecutively treated adolescents who were to receive full-mouth fixed orthodontic appliances were assigned to two groups according to age and sex criteria. In the decalcification study an additional 30 subjects(95 total) were similarly assigned to a third group. The first group(control, n=35) used only toothbrushing with a standard fluoride(1100 ppm F) toothpaste. The second group used toothbrushing with a similar dentifrice supplemented with a 0.4 percent $SnF_2$ gel($SnF_2$ gel group, n=30) used twice daily for the entire 18-month study period. The third group(in the decalcification study only) used a similar toothpaste and 0.05 percent NaF rinse(NgF rinse group, n=30). Clinical assessments of plaque accumulation using the Plaque Index, gingival inflammation using the Gingival Index, and coronal staining were completed single-blinded before appliances were placed and 1, 3, 6, 9, 12 and 18 months after appliances were placed. Decalcification was assessed single blind on all labial surfaces of all erupted teeth before appliances were placed and 3 months after appliances were removed. The results of the gingivitis study indicated that the $SnF_2$ gel gorup had significantly lower scores for the Plaque Index(p<0.01) and Gingival Index(p<0.001) at all examinations during orthodontic treatment than did the control group. In the $SnF_2$ gel group, one subject developed mild coronal staining and two subjects developed moderate staining. In the decalcification study, when pre-treatment levels of decalcification were subtracted from post-treatment values, significantly lower decalcification scores(p<0.05) were found for both whole mouth and first molars in the NaF rinse and gel groups as compared with the control gorup(toothpaste alone). Although the gel group consistently had less decalcification than the rinse group, this difference only approached statistical significance.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of gargle and toothpaste containing low concentration with sodium fluoride on the remineralization through the surface microhardness and mineral content in enamel. After 4 weeks-application, the enamel surface was measured using microhardness tester and the calcium (Ca) and phosphorous (P) concentration of mineral content by electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) analysis. By combining fluoridated gargle with toothpaste, a remineralized enamel resulted in significantly significant differences among the four groups (p<0.05). The Ca change treated with 0.23% fluoridated toothpaste and 0.02% fluoridated gargle with 0.23% toothpaste demonstrated the highest among the other groups. In conclusion. the fluoridated gargle with toothpaste by low concentration showed a significantly greatest synergistic effect on remineralization of the enamel than the other groups.

  • This study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of 5% sodium fluoride-polyvinyl alcohol (NaF-PVA) tape influencing enamel remineralization by analysing enamel surface microhardness (SMH) and variation of ${\Delta}F$ of QLF. After enamel demineralizing of specimen, these 60 specimens with average KHN of microhardness ranging from 50 to 100 and with ${\Delta}F$ of QLF ranging from -15 to -25 were divided into four groups : group 1 (control group), group 2 (NaF-PVA), group 3 (fluoride varnish, FluoroDose$^{(R)}$ varnish), group 4 (Casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate, Tooth mousse plus$^{TM}$). These specimens were treated with materials and then immersed in artificial saliva. We measured remineralization rate each using surface microhardness (SMH) and Quantitative light-induced fluorescence digital (QLF-D). As a result, NaF-PVA tape is better than group 1, 4 and have comparable remineralization effect with group 3 (p < 0.05).

  • The purpose of this study was to observe the effects of sodium fluoride on the bony repair and regeneration processes after the rapid palatal expansion in the growing dogs. Eighteen dogs were divided into experimental and control groups. They were in the late mixed dentition. The rapid Palatal expansion was undertaken in all the animals($180^{\circ}$ turn/day) for ten days. The animals were sacrificed on 0, 15 and 45 days after the finish of expansion. One mg NaF/kg of body weight/day were given orally to the experimental group. Blood samples were drawn before and after expansion and the se겨m calcium, phosphate and alkaline phosphatase level were measured. The undecalcified bone section of midpalatal suture area was made, and observed under the light microscopy The results were as follows ; 1. The day after expansion, the infiltration of inflammatory cells were prominent and the new bone formation started at the edges of the two palatal plates bodering the midpalatal suture in both groups. Especially, the newly formed osteoid were very extensive and the osteoblasts lining the osteoid were very active in the experimental group. 2. At fifteen days after expansion, the active osteoblasts lining the osteold at the surface of trabecular bony spicules and active new bone formation were observed in the both groups. However, the cellular activity and new bone formation were more prominent In the experimental group. 3. At forty five days after expansion, the continuous osteoid and new bone formation and active osteoblasts were observed in the experimental group. But these phenomena were not observed in the control group. In the control group, the numerous osteoclasts were adjacent midpalatal suture and the bony remodeling process was begun. The serum alkaline phosphatase level was maintained highly in the experimental group, but decreased in the control. According to the above results, the author reached the conclusion that sodium fluoride has the stimulation effects on the osteoid production of the osteoblasts during the healing process after the rapid Palatal expansion more continuously.

  • This study was undertaken to determine the effect of a 2.2mg/Kg/day intraoral administration of NaF on the amount of root resorption and osteoclastic activity during or after a rapid maxillary expansion procedure. Ten puerile female dogs were divided into two groups: a control group and a NaF-treated group. A fixed type maxillary expansion device was delivered to all dogs. The appliance was activated twice daily throughout a 20-day period, causing a 5-mm expansion of maxillary bone. After the expansion procedure, the animals were sacrificed at days 0, 15, 30, 45, and 60 of the retention period. The buccal surface of the root of each maxillary canine was examined by means of a surface electron microscope (SEM). Using SEM, web-like resorption lacunae were observed on the bone or the tooth surface at the site of osteoclastic activity; these observations were verified by histological methods. No peculiar resorption lacunae were found in the apical tip of the roots of either the control group or the NaF-treated group animals. The NaF-treated retention group was found to have less resorption lacunae formation on day 45 and day 60. The preventative effect of NaF on resorption lacunae formation on the surface of the bone covering the anchor tooth was confirmed. Larger areas of resorption lacunae were found on the surface of the bone covering the canines in the control group animals, as compared to those of the NaF-treated group, especially on day 30 and day 60. Using SEM, the present study revealed a difference between the control group and the NaF-treated group in the prevalence and the size of the resorption lacunae formation on the cemental root surface. The preventative effect of NaF on bone resorption was confirmed. Further studies concerned with the optimum concentration of NaF that has an effect in vivo are necessary.

  • Chlorhexidine dihydrochloride and sodium fluoride have been used as agents inhibiting the replication of oral bacteria and the formation of dental plaque. There are various kinds of bacteria with different sensitivity against these agents. In this study, chlorhexidine dihydrochloride and sodium fluoride were studied about their effects on the replication of Streptococcus mutars, Streptococcus sobrinus, Streptococcus oralis and Streptococcus salivarius at their concentrations inhibiting the formation of artificial plaque by Streptococcus mutars. When Streptococcus mutans was cultured for 8 hours in the media added with $1.0{\mu}M$ chlorhexidine dihydrochloride, the weight of formed artificial plaque was decreased to $5.1{\pm}1.5mg$ compared with $106.1{\pm}18.1mg$ of the control(p<0.05). At the same time, the optical density of cultured media was decreased. The optical density of cultured media was slightly decreased in Streptococcus sobrinus, but was not decreased in Streptococcus oralis. The optical density of Streptococcus salivarius was decreased at 8 hours-incubation, was not decreased at 24 hours-incubation. When Streptococcus mutars was cultured for 8 hours in the media added with 3.0 mM sodium fluoride, the weight of formed artificial plaque was decreased to $26.7{\pm}8.3mg(p<0.05)$. At the same time, the optical density of cultured media was decreased. The optical density of cultured media was decreased in Streptococcus sobrinus and Streptococcus oralis, but was slightly decreased in Streptococcus salivarius. These results suggest that at the concentration of chlorhexidine dihydrochloride and sodium fluoridehe inhibiting the formation of artificial plaque by Streptococcus mutans, different species of genus Streptococcus show the different sensitivity against these agents.
