  • To develop an automotive fuel hose suitable to the international environmental regulation, FKM rubber materials as an inner material of fuel hole were prepared with different chemical compositions. Measurement of the properties of thermal resistance, oil resistance, fuel resistance, gas permeability including fundamental properties were performed to investigate compatibility for a fuel hose material. Fundamental properties, thermal resistance, oil resistance, fuel resistance and permeability of FKM rubber materials were improved with fluorine content. When the carbon content was 20 phr, FKM compounds with fluorine contents of 66%, 09% and 71% were shown to satisfy the specification oi fuel hose. The gas permeability of NBR and FKM compounds was measured on the mixed fuel oils prepared with isooctane-toluene and gasoline-methanol. FKM rubber materials showed a small difference in penetrated amount of fuel and showed a permeability superior to NBR material. he permeability of FKM rubber materials was not influenced by the contents of fuel oil. Thermal properties of 69% FKM rubber experienced by permeability testing were not variated.

  • The study was performed to investigate the effect of gaseous emissions of sulfur dioxide and hydrogen fluoride on the growth of rice plants under stressed field conditions consisting of 88 industrial plants operating with 285 smoke stacks emitting pollutants. As for the relationship between yields and yield components it is believed that the panicles per hill is the single most important component affecting the rate of yield of the rice plant. Based on the standard partial regression coefficient analysis, panicles per hill has the largest contribution to yield and the average contribution of 54%. Other components such as spikelets per panicle, percent fertility and 1000 grain weight are also contributing factors to yield, although far less so. Fluorine content in the leaf appear to have more negative effect on panicles per hill, percent fertility and subsequent overall yield than does sulfur content in the leaf. It is constantly observed and interesting to note that fluorine and sulfur content in the leaf appears to have no effect on spikelets per panicle and 1000 grain weight. Reduction in yield seems to be affected mainly by panicles per hill which are, in turn, affected more by fluorine content in the leaf as demonstrated by the standard partial coefficient analysis. Regarding the prediction sum of the square of the regression equation, the lowest value was found when nine variables were used for the analysis. The variables taken into consideration were the monthly sulfur and fluorine content in the leaf as well as the monthly percent of leaf damage during the months of June, July and August. A significant correlation is found between the actual and predicted yields by the regression equations selected as a result of a prediction sum of the square analysis.

  • BACKGROUND: Hydrogen fluoride is one of the 97 accident preparedness substances regulated by the Ministry of Environment (Republic of Korea) and chemical accidents should be managed centrally due to continual occurrence. Especially, hydrogen fluoride has a characteristic of rapid diffusion and very toxic when leaking into the environment. Therefore, it is important to predict the impact range quickly and to evaluate the residual contamination immediately to minimize the human and environmental damages. METHODS AND RESULTS: In order to estimate the accident impact range, the off-site consequence analysis (OCA) was performed to the worst and alternative scenarios. Also, in order to evaluate the residual contamination of hydrogen fluoride in crop, the samples in accident site were collected from 15-divided regions (East direction from accident sites based on the main wind direction), and the concentration was measured by fluoride ($F^-$) ion-selective electrode potentiometer (ISE). As a result of the OCA, the affected distance by the worst scenario was estimated to be >10 km from the accident site and the range by the alternative scenario was estimated to be about 1.9 km. The residual contamination of hydrogen fluoride was highest in the samples near the site of the accident (E-1, 276.82 mg/kg) and tended to decrease as it moved eastward. Meanwhile, the concentrations from SE and NE (4.96~28.98 mg/kg) tended to be lower than the samples near the accident site. As a result, the concentration of hydrogen fluoride was reduced to a low concentration within 2 km from the accident site (<5 mg/kg), and the actual damage range was estimated to be around 2.2 km. Therefore, it is suggested that the results are similar to those of alternative accident scenarios calculated by OCA (about 1.9 km). CONCLUSION: It is difficult to estimate the chemical accident-affecting range/region by the OCA evaluation, because it is not possible to input all physicochemical parameters. However simultaneous measurement of the residual contamination in the environment will be very helpful in determining the diffusion range of actual chemical accident.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of light cured fluoride-releasing materials on the inhibition of demineralization. In addition, the pattern of fluoride uptake of adjacent tooth structure was analyzed with EPMA. Eighty intact premolars were restored with $Filtek^{TM}$ Z250(control group, composite), Fuji Filling $LC^{TM}$(RMGI), Dyract $AP^{(R)}$ (compomer) and Beautifil II(giomer). Restored teeth were stored in distilled water for 30 days. Then sixty teeth(n=15) were exposed to demineralizing solution(pH 4.3). Demineralized teeth were bisected and polished. The specimens were observed with confocal laser scanning microscope. The depth of outer lesion and the thickness of inhibition zone were measured. Remained twenty teeth(n=5) were bisected for fluoride uptake analysis. The fluoride analysis were taken at enamel-restoration interface and dentin-restoration interface by electron probe micro-analyzer. The results are as follows: 1. The depth of outer lesion of Fuji Filling $LC^{TM}$ Dyract AP, Beautifil II was shallower than that of $Filtek^{TM}$ Z250 at the margin of restoration(p<0.05). 2. The thickness of caries inhibition zone of Fuji Filling $LC^{TM}$, Dyract AP, Beautifil II was greater than that of $Filtek^{TM}$ Z250 at the margin of restoration(p<0.05). 3. Fuji Filling $LC^{TM}$, Dyract AP, Beautifil II groups showed the greater fluoride uptake into enamel and dentine around restoration than $Filtek^{TM}$ Z250 group. 4. In dentin the difference of fluoride concentration were greater than in enamel, and Dyract AP showed the greatest fluoride concentration in dentin.

  • In order to investigate the effect of fluorine ion in the $Li_{1-x}FeO_2Li_xMnO_2$ (Mn/(Mn + Fe) = 0.8) cathode material, it was synthesized $Li_{1-x}FeO_{2-y}F_y-Li_xMnO_2$ (Mn/(Mn + Fe) = 0.8, $0.05{\le}y{\le}0.15$) cathode materials at $350^{\circ}C$ for 10hrs using solid-state method. $Li_{1-x}FeO_{2-y}F_y-Li_xMnO_2$ (Mn/(Mn + Fe) = 0.8, $0.0{\le}y{\le}0.1$ was composed many large needle-like particles of about $1-1.5\;{\mu}m$ and small particles of about 50-100 nm, which were distributed among the larger particles. However, $Li_{1-x}FeO_{1.85}F_{0.15}-Li_xMnO_2$ material showed slightly different particle morphology. The particles of $Li_{1-x}FeO_{1.85}F_{0.15}-Li_xMnO_2$ were suddenly increased and started to be a spherical type of particle shape. $Li/Li_{1-x}FeO_{1.9}F_{0.1}-Li_xMnO_2$ cell showed a high initial discharge capacity of 163 mAh/g and a high cycle retention rate of 95% after 50 cycles. The initial discharge capacity of $Li/Li_{1-x}FeO_{2-y}F_y-Li_xMnO_2$ ($0.05{\le}y{\le}0.15$) cells increased according to the increase of F content. However, the cycleability of this cell was very rapidly decreased when the substituted fluorine content is over 0.1. We suggested that too large amount of F ion fail to substitute into the $Li_{1-x}FeO_2-Li_xMnO_2$ structure, which resulted in the severe decline of battery performance.

  • The study was performed to evaluate the usefulness of windbreaks to reduce the effect of sulfur dioxide and hydrogen fluoride on the growth of rice plants. It was observed that various pollution indicators such as the ambient concentrations of sulfur oxide and fluoride, sulfur and fluorine contents found in leaves appear to be significantly reduced within 3 meters behind the break. In that region yield components seemed normal. It is, however, observed that the pollutional indicators appear to increase gradually back to the same level as they were on the upwind side of the break. As for the relationships between pollution indicators and yields and also yield components it was believed that pollutants found in leaves might serve as the most important indicators of pollutional damage to rice plant Cultivation in fields. There was high correlation between ambient concentrations and yield, and also yield components. More significantly, a better correlation seemed to exist between sulfur and fluorine contents observed in leaves and yield ; And between those contents and yield components.

  • Volcanic ash components of Mt. Baekdu were estimated to response the change of water quality environment affected by Mt. Baekdu volcanic ash ejected during eruption. Then the change of water concentrations according to the sedimentation of volcanic ash components were analysed. To estimate volcanic ash components of Mt. Baekdu, similar volcanos were selected through the comparison of main foreign volcano's magma type and the selected volcanic ash components supposed as Baekdu Mountain's. To analyse the change of water concentrations, the change of harmful components affected by volcanic ash sedimentation were analysed and the results were compared with domestic drinking water quality standard. As the result, Al, Cd, F, Fe, Pb, Mg, Cl and Sr could affect to water quality. Among those components, concentrations of Cd, F, Fe, Pb and Mg were estimated to exceed the drinking water quality standard.

  • Perfluorinated polymer($Cytop^{TM}$) was deposited on selective area of AlGaN/GaN HEMT structure using low cost and simple spin-coating method, and the electrical characteristics of the device was analyzed for application of passivation layer on semiconductors. Gate lag measurement results of $Cytop^{TM}$ passivated and unpassivated HEMT were compared. Passivated device shows improved 65 % pulsed drain current of dc mode value. Rf measurements were also performed. $Cytop^{TM}$ passivated HEMT have similar rf performance to PECVD grown $Si_3N_4$ passivated device. $Cytop^{TM}$ passivation layer may play an important role in mitigating surface state trapping in the region between gate and drain.

  • In this study, the physicochemical characteristics and fluoride adsorption capacity of the bone char pyrolyzed at different temperatures; 200℃, 300℃, 350℃, 400℃, 500℃, 600℃, and 700℃ were investigated. Analytical studies of the synthesized bone char including; SEM-EDS, XRD, BET and FT-IR, showed the presence of hydroxyapatite(HAP), which is the main substance that adsorbs fluoride from aqueous solutions containing high fluoride concentrations. Bone char pyrolyzed from 350~700℃ specifically revealed that, the lower the temperature, the higher the fluoride adsorption capacity and vice versa. The loss of the fluoride adsorption function of HAP (OH- band in the FTIR analysis) was interpreted as the main reason behind this inverse correlation between temperature and fluoride adsorption. Bone char produced at 350℃ hence exhibited a fluoride adsorption capacity of 10.56 mgF/g, resulting in significantly higher adsorption compared to previous studies.
