  • A high data rate Medical Implant Communications Service (MICS) transmitter for implantable medical devices (IMD) is proposed. An orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based multicarrier scheme is used to overcome the data rate limitation caused by the narrow bandwidth of 300 kHz. The proposed transmitter utilizes multiple MICS channels simultaneously, supporting increased data rate. To satisfy the MICS regulation, various schemes are applied including optimized subcarrier allocation and inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT) architecture, and additional sidelobe suppression technique. Simulation results show that the proposed transmitter can support a maximum data rate of 4.86 Mbps, which is more than ten times faster than the previous systems.

  • In this study, the characteristics of visually impaired elementary students' conceptions on dissolution were investigated. The semi-structured interviews about phenomenon of dissolution, uniformity of solution, conservation of mass on dissolving and volume change during dissolving were conducted with 4 fifth-grade elementary students with visual impairments (three were blind, and one had low-vision). Interviews were recorded and the data were analyzed after transcription. As a result, students with visual impairments knew well about the phenomenon of dissolution, uniformity of solution, and conservation of mass on dissolving, while they couldn't explain volume change during dissolving. Although students with visual impairments were found to have similar level of understanding with students without visual impairments, they had sounder understanding about uniformity of solution. However, students with visual impairments had superficial understanding based on phenomenal experiences. Some of students with visual impairments tried to give micro-level explanation. Based on these results, educational implications were discussed.

  • SSD is a storage medium based on NAND Flash memory. Because of its short latency, low power consumption, and resistance to shock, it's not only used in PC but also in server computers. Most SSDs use FTL to overcome the erase-before-overwrite characteristic of NAND flash. There are several types of FTL, but page mapped FTL shows better performance than others. But its usefulness is limited because of its large memory footprint for the mapping table. For example, 64MB memory space is required only for the mapping table for a 64GB MLC SSD. In this paper, we propose a novel caching scheme for the mapping table. By using the mapping-table-meta-data we construct a fully associative cache, and translate the address within O(1) time. The simulation results show more than 80 hit ratio with 32KB cache and 90% with 512KB cache. The overall memory footprint was only 1.9% of 64MB. The time overhead of cache miss was measured lower than 2% for most workload.

  • We present a static analyzer that detects memory leaks in C programs. It achieves relatively high accuracy at a relatively low cost on SPEC2000 benchmarks and several open-source software packages, demonstrating its practicality and competitive edge against other reported analyzers: for a set of benchmarks totaling 1,777 KLOCs, it found 332 bugs with 47 additional false positives (a 12.4% false-positive ratio), and the average analysis speed was 720 LOC/sec. We separately analyze each procedure's memory behavior into a summary that is used in analyzing its call sites. Each procedural summary is parameterized by the procedure's call context so that it can be instantiated at different call sites. What information to capture in each procedural summary has been carefully tuned so that the summary should not lose any common memory-leak-related behaviors in real-world C program. Because each procedure is summarized by conventional fixpoint iteration over the abstract semantics ('a la abstract interpretation), the analyzer naturally handles arbitrary call cycles from direct or indirect recursive calls.

  • Mokpo coastal zone suffers from increase of tidal amplitude by the reclamation projects of Youngsan River Scadike, Youngam and Keumho Seawalls, resulting inundation oflower lands. Tidal records at Mokpo harbor show jumps just after each construction not only in the mcan high water level but also in extreme one. Thus the design water levels must be newly estimated by a frequency analysis with the data of period after the last construction. But this period is at most 6 years yet, which restrains the normal frequency analysis. In this paper, new approach of converting the past data to the present one by a numerical model is proposed. Converted 32 years and observed 6 years data enables normal frequency analysis.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel fast and low-complexity Motion Estimation (ME) algorithm for Ultra High Definition (UHD) High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). Motion estimation occupies 77~81% of the amount of computation in HEVC. After all, the main key of video codec implementation is to find a fast and low-complexity motion estimation algorithm and architecture. We analyze the previous motion estimation algorithms and propose three optimal algorithm to reduce the computation proportion for HEVC. The proposed algorithm uses only 0.36% of the amount of operations compared to full search algorithm while maintaining compression performance with slight loss of 1.1%.

  • Antireflection coatings on optical lenses commertially available in domestic market are optically analyzed. Transmission spectra and reflection spectra are collected using spectrophotometers. The apparent absorption spectra around the absorption band edge are dominated by the substrate absorption. The reflection spectra and the apparent absorption spectra at visible region between 400nm and 700nm show very strong correlation to each other except a couple samples. The discrepency observed in the latters are due to an increased absorption in visible region by the substrate, which is negative effect of these samples. An antireflection coating consisted of $SiO_2/TiO_2/SiO_2/ZrO_2/Cr$ is made on c-Si substrate for spectroscopic ellispometry analysis. A film-by-film coating is accomplished and between each film deposition, ex-situ spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements are made. The analysis of the spectroscopic ellipsometry data reveals that the average film densities of $ZrO_2$ and $TiO_2$ reach only 80% of their respective packing densities and thick films are inhomogeneous along film growth direction. Discussions are made toward in-situ, real-time monitoring of the film growth so that a real-time feedback is possible to achieve a post-correction to minor deviations occured in the previous step. step.

  • This experiment was performed to enhance $CH_4$ purity of landfill gas by applying gas separator membrane for purified nitrogen gas production. 1:6 area ratios of $1^{st}$ to $2^{nd}$ membrane module was suitable for $CH_4$ recovery. After separation membrane system was installed, 249 tries were performed. Average permeability for $CH_4$ was 28.4% and for $CO_2$ was 94.3%. This can explain nitrogen gas separator membrane can be applied to collect $CH_4$ from LFG. However, nitrogen permeability only reached up to 16.5%. Therefore, the final purified landfill gas concentration was rounded up to 69.7% for $CH_4$, 4.3% for $CO_2$ and 26.0% for $N_2$. For the high degree of $CH_4$ purity, $N_2$ should be kept at least under 2.0% by controlling air inflow to landfill.

  • Sound source localization systems in service robot applications estimate the direction of a human voice. Time delay information obtained from a few separate microphones is widely used for the estimation of the sound direction. Correlation is computed in order to calculate the time delay between two signals. Inverse cosine is used when the position of the maximum correlation value is converted to an angle. Because of nonlinear characteristic of inverse cosine, the accuracy of the computed angle is varied depending on the position of the specific sound source. In this paper, we propose an efficient sound source localization system using angle division. By the proposed approach, the region from $0^{\circ}$ to $180^{\circ}$ is divided into three regions and we consider only one of the three regions. Thus considerable amount of computation time is saved. Also, the accuracy of the computed angle is improved since the selected region corresponds to the linear part of the inverse cosine function. By simulations, it is shown that the error of the proposed algorithm is only 31% of that of the conventional a roach.
