Intergenerational economic mobility in Korea using a quantile regression analysis (한국의 세대 간 경제적 이동성 - 분위수회귀분석을 중심으로 -)

  • This study uses a quantile regression analysis to investigate intergenerational economic mobility in Korea. The analysis is based on data from the 1st through 11th waves of the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS) conducted from 1998-2008. The household nature of the data allows us to link parents' incomes to children's incomes at different points in time. Using a quantile regression analysis instead of mean one reveals that the effect of fathers' earnings are different across the conditional distribution of sons' earnings, particularly being larger on the upper quantile than on the lower quantile. After controlling effect of sons' college education by including a dummy variable for the degree, however, the pattern among quantile effects for fathers' earnings is no longer clear. Instead a new pattern emerges that education has a much larger effect on the upper quantiles than on the lower ones. Using nonparametric estimates of conditional density curves based on the quantile regression results, we derive some interesting features in graphical forms, which are not obvious in numerical analysis.

Asymmetric Impacts of Oil Price Uncertainty on Industrial Stock Market -A Quantile Regression Approach - (분위수회귀분석을 이용한 유가 변동성에 대한 산업별 주식시장의 이질적 반응 분석)

  • This paper investigates the asymmetric effects of crude oil price uncertainty on industrial stock returns under different market conditions (bearish and bullish stock markets). We consider a quantile regression method using monthly oil volatility index, KOSPI and 22 industrial stock indices from May 2007 to February 2019. Especially, we take care of the positive and negative changes of the oil volatility index to analyze asymmetric effects of the oil price uncertainty for the bearish and bullish stock market conditions. During the bearish markets, the oil volatility index has relatively strong statistically significant negative effects on the industrial stock returns. These effects gradually decrease when the market conditions became more bullish markets. In particular, positive changes in the oil volatility index yields a further significant decrease in 12 industrial stock returns during the extreme bearish markets. Moreover, during the bullish markets, negative changes in the oil volatility index have statistically significant negative effects on the 12 industrial stock returns. From the empirical results, we see that participants of the Korean stock market are sensitive to bad news in a recession.

Analysis of AI interview data using unified non-crossing multiple quantile regression tree model (통합 비교차 다중 분위수회귀나무 모형을 활용한 AI 면접체계 자료 분석)

  • With an increasing interest in integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into interview processes, the Republic of Korea (ROK) army is trying to lead and analyze AI-powered interview platform. This study is to analyze the AI interview data using a unified non-crossing multiple quantile tree (UNQRT) model. Compared to the UNQRT, the existing models, such as quantile regression and quantile regression tree model (QRT), are inadequate for the analysis of AI interview data. Specially, the linearity assumption of the quantile regression is overly strong for the aforementioned application. While the QRT model seems to be applicable by relaxing the linearity assumption, it suffers from crossing problems among estimated quantile functions and leads to an uninterpretable model. The UNQRT circumvents the crossing problem of quantile functions by simultaneously estimating multiple quantile functions with a non-crossing constraint and is robust from extreme quantiles. Furthermore, the single tree construction from the UNQRT leads to an interpretable model compared to the QRT model. In this study, by using the UNQRT, we explored the relationship between the results of the Army AI interview system and the existing personnel data to derive meaningful results.

Estimating Price Elasticity of Residential Water Demand in Korea Using Panel Quatile Model (패널 분위수회귀 모형을 사용한 우리나라 지방 상수도 생활용수 수요의 가격탄력성 추정)

  • This study estimates the price elasticity of residential water demand in Korea. For that, annual panel data from the year of 2010 to 2013 for 161 local water services is estimated by using panel quantile model. As a result, the price elasticities of residental water demand in Korea are estimated to be between -0.156 and -0.189 depending on its quantile. In addition, the study finds that the estimated elasticity of residential water demand by traditional conditional mean regression is relatively more influenced by high demand areas because the distribution of residental water demand in Korea is left-skewed.

A Study on the Determinants of Land Price in a New Town (신도시 택지개발사업지역에서 토지가격 결정요인에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to estimate the pricing factors of residential lands in new cities by estimating the pricing model of residential lands. For this purpose, hedonic equations for each quantile of the conditional distribution of land prices were estimated using quantile regression methods and the sale price date of Jangyu New Town in Gimhae. In this study, a quantile regression method that models the relation between a set of explanatory variables and each quantile of land price was adopted. As a result, the differences in the effects of the characteristics by price quantile were confirmed. The number of years that elapsed after the completion of land construction is the quadratic effect in the model because its impact may give rise to a non-linear price pattern. Age appears to decrease the price until certain years after the construction, and increases the price afterward. In the estimation of the quantile regression, land age appears to have a statistically significant impact on land price at the traditional level, and the turning point appears to be shorter for the low quantiles than for the higher quantiles. The positive effects of the use of land for commercial and residential purposes were found to be the biggest. Land demand is preferred if there are more than two roads on the ground. In this case, the amount of sunshine will improve. It appears that the shape of a square wave is preferred to a free-looking land. This is because the square land is favorable for development. The variables of the land used for commercial and residential purposes have a greater impact on low-priced residential lands. This is because such lands tend to be mostly used for rental housing and have different characteristics from residential houses. Residential land prices have different characteristics depending on the price level, and it is necessary to consider this in the evaluation of the collateral value and the drafting of real estate policy.
