The Study of Spray Characteristics for the High Speed Rotating Fuel Injection System (고속회전 연료분무장치의 분무특성연구)

  • 고속회전의 원심력으로 연료를 공급하고 액체연료의 미립화를 초래하는 회전연료분무장치에 대한 분무특성 시험연구를 수행하였다. 특정한 공간상에 존재하는 액적의 특성을 이해하고자 고속회전 연료분사시스템을 설계 제작하였다. 시험장치는 고속으로 회전하는 Spindle, 회전연료노즐, 가압식 물탱크, 아크릴 케이스로 구성하였다. 액적의 크기와 속도를 측정하기 위해 PDPA(Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer)시스템을 사용하였고, ND-Yag Laser를 사용하여 분무를 가시화 하였다. 시험결과 고속회전 연료분사시스템의 분무특성을 확인할 수 있었고, 회전속도는 액적 크기, 속도, 분무각 및 분무패턴 등의 분무특성에 주요한 영향을 미치는 것으로 확인되었다.

  • 분사연료의 혼합기형성과정 최적화를 통한 연소제어 기술은 디젤기관의 기관운전 및 배기특성을 향상시키기 위하여 매우 중요하다. 또한 분무의 혼합기형성 최적화를 위해서는 분사된 연료와 주위기체와의 혼합과정에 영향을 미치는 분무내부의 유동특성에 대한 연구는 필수 불가결하다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 고온 고압의 증발장에서 분무의 액상 거동에 주목하고, 그 거동특성을 통하여 증발디젤분무의 혼합기형성을 해석한다. 비정상 증발분무의 중심축에 레이저 시트광을 입사한 후, 액상분무 액적의 Mie 산란광에 의한 2차원 화상을 획득하여 증발분무 액상의 속도분포 및 와도(vorticity) 등을 구하였다. 분무의 속도분포 및 와도는 2차원 화상에 PIV법을 적용하여 계산하였다. 그림 1에 본 연구에서 구한 속도분포의 일례를 보인다. 본 연구의 결과로 상변화를 동반하는 비정상 증발장에서 구한 분무액상의 거동 특성은 상변화가 일어나지 않는 비증발장에 있어서의 분무거동특성과 유사함을 확인하였다.

  • Atomization characteristics of small LRE-injector spray are investigated by using dual-mode phase Doppler anemometry (DPDA). Velocity, size, number density, and volume flux were measured at various injection pressures along the radial distance to make a close inquiry into spatial distribution characteristic of spray droplets. As the injection pressure increases, the velocity, turbulence intensity, number density, and volume flux of spray droplets become higher, whereas the droplet size ($D_{10}$ or $D_{32}$) gets smaller. Also, velocity and volume flux are proportional to Sauter mean diameter (SMD, $D_{32}$).

  • We studied the spray characteristics of the high-speed rotating fuel injection system. The diameter of in-line injection orifices are varied from 1mm to 5mm and the number of in-line injection orifices are varied from 3 to 12. Droplet size, velocity and spray distribution were measured by the PDPA(Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer) system and spray was visualized. From the test results, the liquid column generated from the injection orifice is mainly controlled by the rotational speeds. Also diameter of injection orifices and number of injection orifices have influence on the diameters of droplet. Consequently, we find out that the basic mechanism of controlling the droplet size is the liquid film thickness in the injection orifice.

  • Atomization characteristics and spatial distribution of the spray emanating from an injector of liquid-propellant thruster are investigated by using dual-mode phase Doppler anemometry (DPDA). Spray characteristic parameters such as the mean velocity, Sauter mean diameter (SMD), and velocity fluctuation are measured at various locations along the spray axis as well as on the radial direction. Those data are quantified in radial profile and also used to scrutinize the correlation between diameter and turbulence intensity of spray droplets. For the better visual grasp, dynamic behavior of spray droplets along the spray stream is presented through the velocity vectors projected on the plane of geometric axis of nozzle orifice and radial coordinate.

  • Dual-mode Phase Doppler Anemometry (DPDA) was used to scrutinize the spatial distribution characteristics of spray emanating from a small Liquid-Rocket Engine (LRE) injector. Droplet size and velocity were measured according to the variation of injection pressure along the plane normal to the spray stream and then the spray characteristic parameters such as Arithmetic Mean Diameter (AMD), Sauter Mean Diameter (SMD), number density, span of drop size distribution, and volume flux were deduced for an investigation of spray breakup characteristics. As the injection pressure increases, the number density, span, and volume flux of spray droplets become higher, whereas the AMD gets smaller.

  • This study was performed to make a close inquiry into a pseudo 3-dimensional structure of the liquid-propellant spray emerging from nonimpinging-type injector. Spray configuration near the injector exit was captured by a high-speed camera, and then its periodic phenomena (shedding) was observed. Detailed spatial structure of spray was investigated by spray characteristic parameters (velocity, diameter, volume flux, etc.) with the aid of a Dual-mode Phase Doppler Anemometry (DPDA). Experiment was carried out at various locations along the geometric axis of the nozzle orifice and on the plane normal to the spray stream with the injection pressures of 17.2 to 27.6 bar.

  • Two-dimensional distribution characteristics on the spray droplets emanating from an injector employed in a liquid-propellant thruster are investigated through dual-mode phase Doppler anemometry (DPDA). Spray-breakup characteristic parameters such as spray droplet velocity, turbulent intensity, Sauter mean diameter (SMD), number density, and volumetric flux are quantified to scrutinize the macroscopic behavior of injector-spray breakup. The present study will be able to contribute to the comprehension for performance features of the thruster in current use and to the design engineering of a brand-new thruster as well.

  • The behavior of spray emanating from an injector to be employed in a liquid-propellant thrust chamber is investigated by optical measurement techniques. The injector has eight holes, each of which has 30 cant angle from the center-axis with the diameter of 0.406 mm. In order to examine an atomization process according to the spray-generation conditions and the evolution along spray downstream, variational features in the velocity and size of droplets obtained through Dual-mode Phase Doppler An 799emometry (DPDA) are delineated and discussed together with instantaneous plane images captured by using Nd:Yag laser sheet beam. A categorization of spray-flow regime representing the atomization and turbulent nature is made through evaluating the non-dimensional parameters, i.e., Reynolds number and Weber number based upon the theoretical injection velocity. These qualitative and quantitative data of spray breakup will be a firm basis for the design of brand-new thruster
