In the development of the liquid rocket engine using the pintle injector, spray characteristics such as spray angle, droplet size, and distribution of the droplets are dominant parameters. Three different kind of multi hole type pintle tip and a continuous type pintle tip were designed. In the case of multi hole pintle tip, SMD result did not have a significant difference depending on the number of holes. In analysis with visualization images, however, the droplets were uniformly distributed as the number of holes increased. Liquid droplets from continuous type pintle tip were finely atomized and dispersed uniformly than those from multi-hole type pintle tip. In addition, the thrust control by adjusting the liquid injection area of the pintle is suitable for the continuous type, which is easier to face-shutoff rather than the multi hole type. The spray angle of each pintle tip according to TMR was measured to derive a specific tendency and corresponding empirical formula.

Effects of injection conditions on a pintle injector which is proper to recent liquid rocket engines requiring low cost, low weight, high efficiency and reusability were studied. The pintle injector with a typical moving pintle was used for atmospheric experiment using water and air. Injection pressures of water were considered 0.5 and 1.0 bar, 0.1 to 1.0 bar for injection pressures of air and 0.2 to 1.0 mm for pintle opening distance. Sauter mean diameters (SMD) of spray was measured at 50 mm distance from a pintle tip and SMD was treated as a representative parameter in this study. As a result, because of shape characteristics of the pintle injector, there was a transient region between the pintle opening distances of 0.6 and 0.7 mm and this region affected to mass flow rates and SMDs. Also, Reynolds numbers for gas, Weber numbers and momentum ratios were adopted as major non-dimensional paramters and the momentum ratio has strong correlation with SMD.

To investigate the spray behavior and atomization characteristics using an air-assist injector, spray visualization and PDPA measurements were carried out under the various assisted air pressures and the fixed fuel pressure. The air assist pintle type injector employed in this study is consisted of the air assist adaptor and an injector housing using the gasoline fuel and air as the working fluids. As results, increasing pressure of assisted air, the growth of spray tip penetration is gradually reduced at the end of spray and spray angle is steadily increased at the main spray region except from the early spray. For the air assist pressure of 25㎪ in a spray downstream, it is doncluded that droplet size distribution shows the peak of 10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and most of the droplet sizes are less than 50${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Also, the air-assist injector extremely improves fuel atomization in order to produce much finer droplets, it shows that approximately, in this case, 50% decreade of SMD than without air assit.
This paper presents effect of nozzle hole number on atomization characteristic of DME fuel spray using three different type of injector having the hole number of 6, 7 and 8. For this study, PDPA(phase Doppler particle analyzer) experiment was performed in terms of $T_{ASOE}$ under various injection pressure. To compare general trend of atomization characteristic, the law data were ensemble averaged based on $T_{eng}$ of 0.2 ms. Results showed that the droplet diameter in terms of SMD(Sauter Mean Diameter) was reduced as increase in injection pressure. Increasing the number of hole lead to reduce in droplet diameter, but no significant reduction in diameter was observed between hole number of 7 and that of 8. In addition, increasing the number of hole resulted in decrease in droplet velocity which is considered as the effect of reduction in spray momentum due to decreasing of fuel quantity per each hole.
The present study is mainly aiming at numerically analyzing the combustion and emission characteristics of the diesel spray in a high-pressure environment. Computations are peformed for the peak chamber pressure with range from 4.08 MPa to 162 MPa. Numerical results indicate that the pressure increase in combustion chamber significantly influences the mechanism for droplet dynamics and mixing characteristics, spray penetration autoignition, flame lift-on height and the propagation or fuel vapor and flame. By increasing the ratio or the ambient density to injected liquid density, the fuel-air mixing rates and the burning rates increase and the $NO_x/soot$ emission level decreases.

The characteristics of the breakup process in supercritical spray is investigated during the injection of supercritical sulfur hexafluoride into dissimilar gases at supercritical pressures and subcritical temperature of the injected fluid. The visualization techniques used are backlighting and shadowgraph methods. The spray angles are measured and the breakup and mixing process are observed at near and supercritical conditions. The results show that spray angles are decreased with the in..ease of the ratio of density $(\frac{\rho_f}{\rho_g})$. At the supercritical temperature, the spray angles in atomization region are kept nearly constant such as the typical spray angle in gas injection. The mixing process is changed radically at the temperature where $\frac{d\rho}{dT}=\frac{1}{2}[\frac{d\rho}{dT}]_{max}$ at given pressure.
Viscoelastic fluid is used in various industrial sites because its cost reduction and environmental benefits by preventing formation of fine droplets that scattered around. However, viscoelastic fluids, unlike newtonian fluids, contain a shear thinning characteristic that decrease in viscosity as shear rate increases and elastic characteristic, making it difficult to predict spray breakup process. In this study we made three test fluids. Boger fluid with viscoelastic characteristics, and two newtonian fluids, were prepared to exclude shear thinning characteristics and study the effects of elastic characteristic only. Flow visualization, spray angle, and SMD were measured for three test fluids using laboratory scale impinging jet test apparatus. As a result, it was confirmed that Boger fluid, unlike the newtonian fluid, was not formed fine droplets that scattered around and the breakup process appeared differently. In addition, SMD was found to be large in Boger fluid, and the SMD according to pressure was confirmed that there is no significant difference.

Atomization characteristics and spatial distribution of the spray emanating from an injector of liquid-propellant thruster are investigated by using dual-mode phase Doppler anemometry (DPDA). Spray characteristic parameters such as the mean velocity, Sauter mean diameter (SMD), and velocity fluctuation are measured at various locations along the spray axis as well as on the radial direction. Those data are quantified in radial profile and also used to scrutinize the correlation between diameter and turbulence intensity of spray droplets. For the better visual grasp, dynamic behavior of spray droplets along the spray stream is presented through the velocity vectors projected on the plane of geometric axis of nozzle orifice and radial coordinate.

Two-dimensional distribution characteristics on the spray droplets emanating from an injector employed in a liquid-propellant thruster are investigated through dual-mode phase Doppler anemometry (DPDA). Spray-breakup characteristic parameters such as spray droplet velocity, turbulent intensity, Sauter mean diameter (SMD), number density, and volumetric flux are quantified to scrutinize the macroscopic behavior of injector-spray breakup. The present study will be able to contribute to the comprehension for performance features of the thruster in current use and to the design engineering of a brand-new thruster as well.
