  • This study evaluates the applicability of the classification rule of hydrological soil group proposed by Lee et al. (2018) with its application to three river basins (Jungmuncheon, Cheonmicheon, and Hancheon) in Jeju Island. The CN values are estimated as results of this application to these three basins, which is then compared with those estimated by applying the conventional three methods. Additionally, previous studies related with the classification of soil groups of Jesu Island, such as the infiltration and rainfall-runoff analysis, are reviewed to evaluate how the resulting hydrological soil groups vary depending on the adopted classification method.. Summarizing the results is as follows. (1) Comparison result of the hydrological soil groups of Jeju Island with respect to the classification method shows that the soil group B is dominant in the application of Lee et al. (2018). However, it is hydrological soil groups C and D in the application of Hu and Jung (1987), hydrological soil groups A and C in the application of Jung et al. (1995), and hydrological soil group D in the application of RDA (2007). (2) In all the applications of Lee et al. (2018) to three selected river basins in Jeju Island, the CN valuse are found to be smaller than those by other conventional three methods.. Lastly, (3) The evaluation results of previous studies related with the classification of hydrological soil groups analysis in Jeju Island shows that the CN value in the Jeju Island may be smaller than those estimated by conventional three methods, also the initial loss higher than 0.2S.

  • Eupatorium rugosum Houtt. is known to be an alien invasive species and is listed as an ecosystem disturbance species in Korea. There is also an eastern North American species Ageratina altissima (L.) R. M. King & H. Rob. similarly dispersed in Korea. This article aims to clarify the taxonomic confusion regarding the species. The two names refer to the same species originally described as Ageratum altissimum by Linnaeus in his Species Plantarum. Ageratum altissimum was transferred to the genus Eupatorium and later to Ageratina. Eupatorium rugosum is the replacement name in Eupatorium because of E. altissimum L., an existing name based on the different type. When the species was transferred to Ageratina, A. altissima was published based on its basionym, as the epithet "altissima" was available in the genus. It seems that taxonomic confusion regarding the species in Korea is due to the recognition of the names as different taxa. Ageratina altissima is the correct name for the species based on morphological and molecular data.

  • The delimitation and systematic relationships of the C. foetida complex and related species were evaluated by numerical methods, including principal components analysis and cluster analysis of major morphological characters. Results of these analyses strongly support recognition of three varieties in C. foetida; these include C. foetida var. foetida, C. foetida var. micrantha, and C. foetida var. velutita. The results also indicated that C. brachycarpa, C. frigida, C. heracleifolia, and C. yunnanensis are distinct species, and C. heracleifolia comprises C. heracleifolia var. heracleifolia and C heracleifolia var. bifida. Cimicifuga mairei and C. foetida var. foliolosa, however, appeared to be morphologically indistinguishable from C. foetida var. velutina. In addition, C. foetida var. longibracteata and C. foetida var. bifula are conspecific with C. frigida.rigida.

  • A comparative micromorphology of petal and sepal of 15 species of Lycopus was undertaken to assess their usefulness in species identification and to evaluate their significance in the taxonomy using scanning electron microscope and stereo microscope. Five types of trichome are found within the genus: unicellular cylindrical trichome, unicellular trichome with papillae, simple multicellular trichome, capitate glandular trichome, and peltate glandular trichome. The types, distribution, and density of the trichomes show considerable variation among the taxa. The distributional pattern of the unicellular cylindrical trichomes on inner side of corolla is differed among the investigated taxa, and can be classified into four patterns. The apex shape of sepal and the incised position of calyx are also various and be recognizedas four patterns. The shape of cell composing in both outer and inner sides of petal and sepal are shown variously. Finally, the taxonomic significance of micromorphology of the petal and sepal in identification and elucidation of the genus Lycopus, especially among the species is also briefly discussed.

  • Because streams have a great diversity of morphological features according to their reaches, it is necessary to classify the types of streams in order to assess their characteristics of channel. In addition, a quantitative assessment system for channel characteristics should be reflected in the stream type properties. Therefore, this study compares two stream classification system (Rosgen's and Yamamoto's) to review their applicability on Korean streams, and the two classification systems were applied on the Nam River. In order for the mean bed slope and the longitudinal connectivity of the provincial and national streams to be reflected in the assessment system of channel characteristics, the Yamamoto system is considered highly adaptable in the stream geomorphology side. In addition, it has been found the Rosgen system has a low correlation of bed slope compared to the Yamamoto system in the view of bed materials. On the other hand, the Yamamoto system was found to be capable of reflecting sediment sorting (hydraulic sorting) of the bed slope. According to the results obtained at the Nam River, the Rosgen system could not classify a type of stream by relationship between bed material and bed slope, but the Yamamoto system can verify the correlation of stream type. However, further review is needed with respect to the applicability of natural rivers. Three types of stream that can be applied to the assessment system of channel characteristics were proposed.

  • The osteological characters of Aphyocypris chinensis of subfamily Leuciscinae were examined and the systematic position of this species is discussed through comparison with other species of subfamilies Leucisicinae and Cultrinae. Numbers of the dorsal an danal fin ray, having no symphyseal knob and barbels and separation between dermosphenotic and supraorbital, are in acord with those of subfamily Leuciscine, and the abdominal keel and trigemino-facial nerve foramen of the prootic are more closely related with those of subfamily Cultrinae. But several diagnostic characters detected only in this species are as follows ; 4 infraorbitals, the shape of ethmoid, 5-6 hypurals, the broad orbital width, having no extrascapular, incomplete lateral line and considerable small size.

  • Numerical analysis based on 33 morphological characters from 25 populations of 8 species of tribe Forsythieae in Korea was conducted to investigate the taxonomic delimitation and discuss the systematic relationships. In this study, Fontanesia phyllyreoides Labill was adopted as comparing outgroup to discuss the taxonomic status of Abeliophyllum distichum and elucidate the taxonomic relationships between tribe Forsythieae and tribe Fontanesiae. Based on the results of PCA, the sum of contributions for the total variance of three major principal components was 79.6% (PC1 54.2%, PC2 15.4% and PC3 10.0%, repectively). Two dimensional plotting from PCA results recognized three distinct generic clusters. Among the populations of Forsythia, two distinct groups were clustered as I. koreana-saxatilis-viridissima and II. ovata-nakaii. However, 15 populations of Abeliophyllum distichum were arranged randomly without any tendency, and the infraspecies of Abeliophyllum distichum could be recognized as individual variations. Fontanesia phyllyreoides Labill was clustered independently and intertribal limitation was clearly distinguished.

  • The anatomical characters of the 19 taxa of Korean Juncus were reviewed in order to examine their significance in taxonomy. Cross-section analyses were conducted on the stem, leaf, and capsule. Descriptions, line drawings, tables, and a species key of Korean Juncus are provided for species identification based on anatomical characters. The results of this study showed that the arrangements of the vascular bundle, fiber, and air-space structure in the stems as well as the arrangements of the vascular bundle and parenchyma in the leaves and the development of placenta in capsules are the key characters to be used when classifying each species of Juncus. It was revealed that the studied anatomical features were more useful for identification at the subgenera and section levels than at the species level. Therefore, these anatomical characters used in conjunction with external morphological features will make a valuable contribution to establishing a natural classification system for Juncus.

As a part of studies on taxonomy and phylogeny of bats inhabiting Korea, a taxonomic review of one rhinolophid and six vespertilionid bats collected at 18 localities during the period from October 1985 to July 1987 was carried out, basing on the external, cranial, dental and humeral morphology. These bats include a rare species, Eptesicus serotinus brachydigitus, the detailed characters of which were described in addition to the original description by Mori (1928b). Further, the Korean microchiropteran faunal succession was described laking into consideration the recent chiropteran fauna, and climatic and geographical changes in the Pleistocene: the recent bat fauna of Korea has become abundant in the north-originating species rather than in the south-originating ones, which is a reverse tendency in the Palearctic continent.
