  • We fabricated the 4 channel wave function generator with variable frequency, pulse width, amplitude and rising/falling slope to develop driving method of charged particle type display. The selective sell driving is ascertained by fabricated panel with black and yellow particles. To measure CIE point, reflectivity, contrast ratio and viewing angle, experimental apparatus is integrated with optical circular$(1^{\circ})$ moving emitting/receiving part and spectrometer connected to emitting part. The yellow particles in glass have reflectivity of $35{\sim}40%$ and wavelength of 571.2nm and black one has reflectivity of $15{\sim}20%$ in case of only 1 layer of particle, and the case of 3 layer the optical property is promoted.

  • Titanium oxide thin films were deposited by DC reactive magnetron sputtering(RMS) with Ar ion-beam assistance using end-Hall ion source at low oxygen partial pressure and long target-to-substrate distance. The optical and structural properties of deposited films were investigated by the measurement of measured transmittance and reflectance, atomic force microscope(AFM), and X-ray diffraction(XRD). The results show that the Ax ion-beam assisted RMS for titanium oxide thin films induces the higher packing density, lower absorption, and smoother surface than the conventional RMS, suggesting that it can be employed in deposition of optical dielectric coatings.

  • The complex refractive indices of $Ge_2Se_2Te_5$ which show reversible phase change between the crystalline phase and an amorphous one depending upon the annealing process have been determined in the spectral range of 0.7-4.5 eV. The $Ge_2Se_2Te_5$ films were DC sputter deposited on the crystalline silicon substrate. The spectro-ellipsometry data of a thick film were analyzed following the modelling procedure where the quantum mechanical dispersion relation were used for the complex refractive indices of both the cryastalline phase $Ge_2Se_2Te_5$ and and amorphous phase $Ge_2Se_2Te_5$, respectively. On the other hand, with the surface micro-roughness layer whose effective thickness was determined from AFM analysis, the spectro-ellipsometry data were numerically inverted to yield the complex refractive index of $Ge_2Se_2Te_5$ at each wavelength. With these set of complex refractive indices, the reflectance spectra were calculated and those spectra obtained from the numerical inversion showed better agreement with the experimental reflection spectra for both the cryastalline phase and an amorphous phase. Finally, the thin $Ge_2Se_2Te_5$ film which has the optimum thickness of 26 nm as the medium for optical recording was also analyzed and the quantitative result of the film thickness and the surface microroughness has been reported.

  • Blue-ice area is a glacial ice field in ice sheet, ice shelf and glaciers where snow ablation and sublimation is larger than snowfall. As the blue-ice area has large influences on the meteorite concentration mechanism and ice mass balance, it is required to quantify the concentration of blue-ice. We analyzed spectral reflectance characteristics of blue-ice, snow and cloud by using MODIS images obtained over blue-ice areas in McMurdo Dry Valleys, East Antarctica, from 2007 to 2012. We then developed Normalized Difference Blue-ice Index (NDBI) algorithm which quantifies the concentration of blue-ice. Snow and cloud have a high reflectance in visible and near-infrared (NIR) bands. Reflectance of blue-ice is high in blue band, while that lowers in the NIR band. NDBI is calculated by dividing the difference of reflectance in the blue and NIR bands by the sum of reflectances in the two bands so that NDBI = (Blue-NIR)/(Blue + NIR). NDBI calculated from the MODIS images showed that the blue-ice areas have values ranging from 0.2 to 0.5, depending on the exposure and concentration of blue-ice. It is obviously different from that of snow and cloud that has values less than 0.2 or rocks with negative values. The change of NDBI values in the blue-ice area has higher correlation with snow depth ($R^2=0.699$) than wind speed ($R^2=0.012$) or air temperature ($R^2=0.278$), all measured at a meteorological station installed in McMurdo Dry Valleys. As the snow depth increased, the NDBI value decreased, which suggests that snow depth can be estimated from NDBI values over blue-ice areas. The NDBI algorithm developed in this study will be useful for various polar research fields such as meteorite exploration, analysis of ice mass balance as well as the snow depth estimation.

  • Despite the rapid expansion of satellite images supply, the application of imagery is often restricted due to unautomated image processing. This paper presents the automated process for the selection of training areas which are essential to conducting supervised image classification. The training areas were selected based on the prior and cover information. After the selection, the training data were used to classify land cover in an urban area with the latest image and the classification accuracy was valuated. The automatic selection of training area was processed with following steps, 1) to redraw inner areas of prior land cover polygon with negative buffer (-15m) 2) to select the polygons with proper size of area ($2,000{\sim}200,000m^2$) 3) to calculate the mean and standard deviation of reflectance and NDVI of the polygons 4) to select the polygons having characteristic mean value of each land cover type with minimum standard deviation. The supervised image classification was conducted using the automatically selected training data with Sentinel-2 images in 2017. The accuracy of land cover classification was 86.9% ($\hat{K}=0.81$). The result shows that the process of automatic selection is effective in image processing and able to contribute to solving the bottleneck in the application of imagery.

  • Landsat OLI satellite imagery can be applied to various remote sensing applications, such as generation of land cover map, urban area analysis, extraction of vegetation index and change detection, because it includes various multispectral bands. In addition, land cover map is an important information to monitor and analyze land cover using GIS. In this paper, land cover map is generated by using Landsat OLI and existing land cover map. First, training dataset is obtained using correlation between existing land cover map and unsupervised classification result by K-means, automatically. And then, spectral signatures corresponding to each class are determined based on training data. Finally, abundance map and land cover map are generated by using iterative spectral mixture model. The experiment is accomplished by Landsat OLI of Cheongju area. It shows that result by our method can produce land cover map without manual training dataset, compared to existing land cover map and result by supervised classification result by SVM, quantitatively and visually.

  • Most methods of color constancy, which is the ability to determine the object color regardless of the scene illuminant, have failed to meet our expectation of their performance especially about low-illuminated scenes. Some methods with high performance need to be developed, but we must, above all else, obtain experimental images for analyzing the required circumstances or evaluating the methods. Therefore, the paper produces new sets of images so that they can be used in the development of color constancy methods suitable for low-illuminated scenes. These sets are composed of two parts: one part of images which are synthesized with spectral power distribution(SPD) of illuminants, spectral reflectance curve of reflectances, and sensor response functions of camera; the other part of images where the intensity of each image is adjusted at the uniform rate. In an experiment, the use of the sets takes an advantage that its result images are analyzed and evaluated quantitatively as their ground truth data are known in advance.

  • We report a resonance fiber Bragg sensor interrogation based on a Fourier domain mode-locking (FDML) laser. The FDML laser is constructed based on a conventional ring laser cavity configuration with fiber Fabry-Perot tunable filter (FFP-TF). There are two sensor parts which are composed with two FBGs inside the laser cavity. Each sensor part provides a separate laser cavity for the FDML laser. The resonance frequencies of the laser cavities are 46.687 kHz and 44.340 kHz, respectively. We applied a static and a dynamic strain on the FBG sensor system. The slope coefficients of the measured relative wavelength shift and relative time interval from the static strain are found to be $0.61pm/{\mu}{\epsilon}$ and $0.8ns/{\mu}{\epsilon}$, respectively.

  • Lithium-Carbon Intercalation Compounds(Li-CICs) have been synthesized from various carbon ma-terials by use of the modified stainless steel two-bulbs methods. These compounds had various colours by structural character of starting materials. The synthesized Li-CICs were identified to stage formation process by X-ray diffraction data. At these results, well-oriented natural graphite and graphite fiber are formed lower stages(Stage 1, Stage 2), but poor-oriented carbon fiber and petroleum cokes are also formed higher stages(Stage 3, Stage 4, Stage 5). And when we compared with measured d value and calculated d value, these values agreed with each other. But poor-oriented carbon materials are some difference from them. The stage stability and energy stage of Li-CICs were obtained by UV/VIS Spectrophotometric data. X-ray diffraction and UV/VIS Spectrophotometric data suggested that well-oriented carbon materials has distingushible curve between energy and reflectance. In these results, we know that many charge carriers between carbon layers are related to concentration of intercalants. And then, this paper also provides information on high efficiency energy storing materials at intercalation process of Li-CICs.

  • The design of a flat-field XUV spectrograph is optimized for a high throughput, aberration-corrected spectral image in the wavelength region of 50-300 $\AA$ The varied-line spacing (VLS) concave grating theory for an XUV spectrograph with a toroidal mirror in front of an entrance slit is derived. Since the derived theory includes the arbitrary shaped source, it is able to correct the limit of the simple optimization theory which considers only a point source at the center of the entrance slit. The reflection matrix at the toroidal mirror and the diffraction matrix at VLS grating are derived and compared with those of a holographic grating. The absolute energy efficiency of a flat-field spectrograph is calculated by considering the reflectivities of the toroidal mirror and the Au coated concave grating and the grating efficiency. The alignment sensitivity of the toroidal mirror and the concave grating is investigated, and the method to achieve the best imaging of XUV spectrum is discussed. The calculated resolving power of the flat-field XUV spectrograph is more than 4000 in the aberration-corrected wavelength range. The focused spot size at the dispersion plane is less than $20\mu \textrm m\times \mu \textrm m$at the wavelength 100$\AA$ It is shown that a high throughput characteristic can also be achieved through a careful adjustment of alignment parameters.
