  • This case study examines the experiences of an African American student's successful second language acquisition in Korea. There is an increasing number of multicultural families in Korea; but few research on African American students' second language learning. In the past, some American researchers have analyzed African American students as academic underachievers for learning and there is a scarcity of research on African American students' successfully acquiring a second language. With this qualitative research design, the researchers interviewed, and observed an African American girl named Mary. The researchers also interviewed Mary's mother, teacher, and peers about Mary's Korean language development. The results of this study revealed Mary's determined efforts to become a fluent Korean speaker with support from family, community and friends. Mary underwent unique social and systematic supports for her language development. This paper concludes with the educational implication for multicultural language learners in Korea and the possibility to diminish the common stereotypes of African Americans as underachievers.

  • Although many elementary school students love to read edutainment comics, they are not appropriately guided when they read those books. This study aimed to suggest the necessity of reading instruction for the edutainment comics. To achieve the purpose of this study, we examined the 8 chapters programs of reading instruction-for the 4th grade students-in 2 times. After carrying out the 1st program, we found out the problem related to the program and developed the trouble shooted the 2nd program. The purpose of this study is to show necessity of reading instruction on the edutainment comics in order to activate students' reading. This research shows that if teachers use edutainment comics appropriately to teach students with learning difficulties and reading difficulties, they might help the students by developing their learning abilities and enthusiasm for reading. This study suggests reading guidance program should be used to improve students' learning and reading activities as elementary school students can have more interests to specific topics through the edutainment comics.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a mathematics anxiety scale for elementary students in South Korea. Based on the literature review, I developed two types of survey items measuring elementary students' mathematics anxiety. Teachers or students may use survey measurements selectively according to the students' participants in mathematics private institutions. In order to assess the reliability and validity of survey items, I conducted surveys with elementary students. The sample consisted of 300 elementary students in public elementary schools in Seoul. A total of 28 items were developed and examined for the internal consistence. The results showed that the proposed scale was appropriate to represent the mathematics anxiety of elementary students. The survey items of this study could be applied for assessing elementary students' mathematics anxiety regardless of their gender and age factors.

  • Since research has barely been done on the minority with low-achievement & low-SES in probability, this research attempted to search the change of their thinking level in the classes of probability and motivate them on the mathematical learning to feel confident in mathematics. We can say that the problems of the educational discriminations are due to the overlook on the individual conditions, situations, and environments. Therefore, in order to resolve some discrimination, 4 students who belonged to the minority group, engaged in the research, based on 10 units of the instructional materials designed for the research. As a result, for the student's thinking level, it was observed that they were improved from the 1st to the 3rd level in probability. Also, the researcher found that the adequate use of the encouragement, the praise, the direct explanation, and the scaffolding enabled them to prompt their learning motives and the increased responsibility on the learning. As time passed, the participants could share their mathematical knowledge and its concept with others, in the increased confidence.

  • The importance of mathematics is increasing as human beings are entering the 4th industrial revolution era from the information society. In response to this trend, the government is also paying a lot of attention to math education by addressing 2012 mathematics education as 'the year of mathematics education.' However, many students are still suffering from mathematics and they feel math is difficult and even give up math. For this cause, students who give up math are showing up a lot in middle and high schools. For these math low achievers, the government, educational institutions, research institutes, and schools are creating and implementing a lot of programs. Among these programs, there is also a program called Math Clinic counseling. However, most of these math clinic counseling end up in a one-time events or are not linked to class because counselors and math teachers are different. So, this research focuses on this fact : gap between math clinical counseling and real mathematics class. The study analyze the reasons of the cause of low level of self-confidence in math and high level of math anxiety from the students. And it suggests some strategies for the individual students base on their difficulties. Applying these strategies to the students, the study mainly focused on how the strategies are presented in real class by observing practical classes.

  • Sleepiness is associated with many different conditions and, as a neglected topic, it can be the cause of serious psychological and social disadvantages. In the aspect of learning, additional problems may arise from poor progress in school caused by the effect of sleepiness on concentration, memory, and other cognitive functions. Narcolepsy is by no means the most common cause of excessive sleepiness. Nonetheless, it is not a rarity, especially in young people. The non-specific nature of early features of narcolepsy, combined with very limited awareness that the condition can start in various ways, leads to many misinterpretations. Misinterpretation of narcolepsy symptoms is not confined to the medical profession. Teachers may well be critical of a student with narcolepsy because of their perception of narcolepsy symptoms as laziness, poor motivation, or difficult behavior and dull learning ability. Inappropriate reactions by parents, teachers, and peers, based on misinterpretation of narcolepsy symptoms or the patient's reactions to them, make a difficult situation worse. Especially in Korea, where schooling is focused on college entrance examinations, the problem is very serious and intensified by inappropriate or delayed diagnosis and treatment. Therefore, psychiatrists should be aware that narcolepsy in young adolescents is not rare and that they need to be familiar with its clinical features in both its classic and less obvious forms. Narcolepsy should be suspected if a adolescent's excessive sleepiness can not be explained in other ways. Therefore, we report on two patients who portray the tendency of dull learning ability and are mistaken as idle students. We diagnosed narcolepsy through polysomnography and multiple sleep latency testing. We treated the students with methylphenidate and pemolin. The students showed improvement in learning ability and were able to adapt better to school.

  • This study analyzed each process of demand analysis(A), design(D), development(D), implementation(I) and evaluation(E) of the program to support mathematics learning of students with under-achievement of math in high school. To analyze the demand, a survey was conducted on 235 high school math teachers and 334 high school students who were under-achieved in mathematics. To design and develope the program, this study linked middle school math to high school math so that the students with poor math learning could easily participate in mathematics learning. The programs developed in this study were implemented in three high schools, where separate classes were organized and run for students with poor math learning. The evaluation of the programs developed in this study was done in two ways. One was a quantitative evaluation conducted by five experts, and the other was a qualitative evaluation conducted through interviews with teachers and students participating in the program. This study found that students with poor mathematics learning were more motivated to learn, started to do mathematics, and encouraged to be confident when using learning materials that included easy problems and detailed solutions that they could solve themselves. From these results, the following three implications can be derived in developing a program to support students who are experiencing poor mathematics learning in high school. First, we should develop learning materials that link middle school mathematics to high school mathematics so that students can supplement middle school mathematics related to high school mathematics. Second, we need to develop learning materials that include detailed solutions to basic examples and include homogeneous problems that can be solved while looking at the basic example's solution process. Third, we should avoid the challenge of asking students who are under-achieving to respond too openly.
