  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the duration of lochia in women hospitalized at Korean medical postpartum care center and to identify factors that influence duration of lochia. Methods: On the obstetric variables of 315 cases, the duration of lochia was analyzed. In the postpartum care center, the obstetric variables were asked of 315 cases of women, and who examined a body composition. After discharge, women were surveyed for the duration of lochia by telephone. Results: The median duration of lochia was 30 days and the range was 18~53 days. Maternal age, parity and mode of delivery were associated with its duration. So, its duration was longer on women over the age of 35, multipara and women had a Cesarean section. Its duration was correlated with gestational age and BMI before pregnancy, but not neonatal gender, birth weight, maternal BMI change during pregnancy, maternal body weight gain, BMI before delivery. Conclusions: It was 30 days that the median duration of lochia of women who had been got Korean medical postpartum care management, and which was slightly different from previous studies. And it was influenced by maternal age, parity, mood of delivery, gestational age and BMI before pregnancy. In future more studies or surveys for the duration of lochia of women with no treatment, lochial pattern and so on should be done.

  • Objectives: Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women and has rapidly increasing rate annually. At present, western cancer therapies by surgery, radiation, and anticancer drug have not been fully effective. So many interests are given to herbal medicine on cancer treatment recently. This study was designed to investigate the effects of Curcuma longa L. (CL) on MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cells and DMBA-induced breast cancer in rats. Methods: In this experiment, MDA-MB-231 cells were cultured in cell culture plates. 0.0625, 0.125, 0.25, 0.5, 1.0 mg/ml of CL extract were tested for their anti-proliferative effects on MDA-MB-231 cells by MMT assay. And we induced breast cancer in rats. The changes in tumor's weight, and the effects on proliferations of splenocyte and thymocyte were investigated. Results: CL showed anti-proliferative effects on MDA-MB-231 cells in proportion to concentration of the CL. DMBA-induced breast cancer in rats, tumor's weight of the rat was not statistically significant, but showed a tendency to be reduced in the groups treated with CL. Proliferation rate of the rat's splenocyte and thymocyte increased in proportion to CL. In breast cancer tissue, expression of ER-${\alpha}$ was weakened proportionately to the concentration of the CL. Conclusions: These data suggest that CL can prevent the proliferation of breast cancer, then CL is useful to treat patient with breast cancer.

  • Objectives: The present study was carried out to investigate the effects of YJT on experimental hypothyroidism induced by sodium perchlorate and methimazolein in mice. Methods: 30 one-month-old C57BL6 mice were decided into 4 groups: 1) normal (n=6), 2) sodium perchlorate and methimazolein-induced hypothyroidism control (n=8), 3) hypothyroidism mice treated with low YJT (n=8), 4) hypothyroidism mice treated with high YJT (n=8). Sodium perchlorate and methimazolein were administered for 4 weeks, YJT (low and high) was administered for 2 weeks after sodium perchlorate and methimazolein were initiated for a total duration of 2 week. The changes were observed : weight of body, T3, T4, TSH, follicular cells in the thyroid tissues, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglyceride and free fatty acid, FBG, AST, ALT and so on. Results: YJT did not affect body weight gain. YJT restored free T4 level decreased by sodium perchlorate and methimazolein and prevented shrinking of follicles and proliferation of follicular cells in the thyroid tissues. In addition, YJT lowered total and LDL cholesterol levels elevated by sodium perchlorate and methimazolein respectively and ameliorated distribution of fat in liver tissues. In addition, the effect on fasting blood glucose (FBG), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) were also investigated. Conclusions: These data suggest that YJT can be used to treat woman patients which are accompanied with hypothyroidism relatively safely.
