  • Ship and offshore structures, those are to be used under the seawater conditions are prone to corrosion. In this research, the effect of rust existence on the fatigue strength at structural member of ship and offshore structure was investigated. For this purpose, fatigue tests for the rust removed specimen were conducted. In addition, the comparison of fatigue strength between rust removed specimen and rusted specimen was conducted. With these test results, fatigue strength share effect was investigated. Finally, at this research, it was found that there is fatigue strength share effect on the rust. In comparison of fatigue strength reduction factor, fatigue strength of the rust removed specimen is 18.1% lower than that of the rusted specimen. From the above, it was known that as far as there are not any harmful ingredients in it, rust on the steel plate is beneficial in an aspect of fatigue strength.

  • For structural design and diagnosis, quantitative relationship between corrosive degradation and variation of mechanical properties such as tensile strength and fatigue strength is needed. But it is difficult to find experimental data associated with corrosive degradation of structural structures in the literature. In this study, first of all I established the atmospheric corrosion test procedure. And using specimens of SM490A and SS400 on the atmospheric corrosion test bed, I carried out tensile and fatigue tests at regular intervals. And we studied the effect of post-weld heat treatment on the tensile and fatigue behaviour. It is found fatigue strength decreases as the atmospheric corrosion period increases.

  • TMCP steel has been widely used to construct ships and offshore structures. When it comes to ship and offshore structures, corrosion fatigue damages caused by sea water and fatigue occurred by wave-induced forces usually go on occurring simultaneously. So the fatigue life in corrosion environment is decreased markedly in comparison with that in air. The fatigue crack in corrosion easily initiates on welded joints of structure like as the fatigue crack in air. Therefore it is very important to study the fatigue properties of those of their welded joints as well as steel plates. In this study, rotary bending fatigue tests have been performed to investigate fatigue crack initiation and behavior of fatigue crack growth on CO2 gas weld HAZ of TMCP steel. The fatigue test used the specimens with various stress concentration factors in air and 3% NaCl solution

  • Fatigue strength of temporary steels and painted structural steels corroded under outdoor atmospheric environments is not clear. In this study, fatigue tests were carried out on steel plates which were cut off from 7-year-old temporary structural member under subway construction environment and from 75-year-old Yeongdo bridge member under marine atmospheric environment. After removing corrosion production on the steel surface, 3-dimensional surface geometry of the corroded steel was measured at intervals of $1.0{\times}1.0mm$, and corrosion characteristics such as minimum, maximum and mean values of residual thicknesses were calculated. From the fatigue test and FEM analysis results, the relationship between corrosion characteristics and fatigue behavior was presented, and change in fatigue strength of the unpainted and painted steels corroded in outdoor environments was also presented.

  • In order to develop a method of corrosion fatigue design and estimate reliability of TMCP steel using as the material of heavy industries and plants, its corrosion susceptibilities, corrosion fatigue strength, and determination of fatigue design criterion considering corrosion degradation were investigated. From the results, the corrosion characteristic of TMCP steel is very susceptible in 3.5wt.% NaCl solution. Its susceptibility was linearly increased with the solution temperature increase. The corrosion fatigue strength in $25${\circ}$, 3.5wt.% NaCl solution is very lower than that of in air. And also, it was decreased with the frequency decrease in the same environment. It is expected that the developed corrosion fatigue design method for TMCP steel is useful. However, it is necessary to verify its reliability for actual application.

  • Recently in Japan, fracturing was observed on the diagonal member of a through truss bridge at the boundary region with the concrete slab. Local corrosion damage where the diagonal member was enclosed in the concrete slab is an important factor in the fracture. In this study, accelerated exposure tests were carried out on concrete-steel model specimens simulating steel members at the boundary with concrete. Fatigue tests were then performed on the corroded model specimens. Accelerated exposure tests of the S6-cycle, which is carried out on the model specimens for 150, 300, 450 and 600 da ys. Their surface geometry was then measured. From the accelerated exposure test results, change in maximum and mean corrosion depths was determined according to the testing periods. The effect of local corrosion on fatigue strength was also presented based on the fatigue test results.

  • This study presents reliability assessment of merchant ships with focus on hull girder ultimate limit state, taking into account the time-dependent effects of corrosion, fatigue cracking and local denting. Some considerations for establishing a reliability-based repair and maintenance scheme are also made so as to keep a ship's hull girder strength reliability at an acceptable level even later in life.

  • Corrosion highly affects the lifetime and performance of machinery metallic components. The effects of shot peening on the fatigue life of Al 7075-T6 under corrosive environment are investigated in this paper. Experimental results show that the fatigue limit of shot peened specimen increases about 52%. That means the fatigue life of metallic components is highly extended by shot peening. The corrosion greatly reduces the fatigue strength depending on the corrosive condition from one week up to one year. In case of shot peened specimen, the corrosion does not reduce the fatigue strength and fatigue life up to six months. It means that the shot peening has superior effectiveness to reduce the influence of corrosion to the metallic materials.

  • Recently with the rapid development in marine and shipbuilding industries such as marine structures, ship, and chemical plants, there occurs much interest in the study of corrosion fatigue characteristics was closed up an important role in mechanical design. In this study, the 5086 Al-Alloy was tested by used of a rotary bending fatigue tester and was investigated under the environments of various specific resistance and air. The specific resistance, as a corrosion environment, was changed 15, 20, 25 and 5000$\Omega$.cm. The corrosion fatigue crack initiation sensitivity was quantitatively inspected for 5086 Al-Alloy in the various specific resistance. The experimental constants of Paris rule were examined in the various specific resistances, and the influences of load and corrosion with affect the crack growth rate were compared with. Main results obtained are as follows: (1) Number of stress cycles to corrosion fatigue crack initiation delaies and corrosion fatigue crack initiation sensitivity decreases with the increasing for the specific resistance. (2) The experimental constant m of Paris rule decreases with the decreasing for specific resistance. Hence the effect of corrosion is more susceptible than that of stress intensity factor. (3) The corrosion fatigue crack of 5086 Aluminium Alloy appears intergranular fracture. (4) Corrosion sensitivity is decreased with the increasing stress intensity factor and is nearly uniform when stress intensity factor is over 40kg.mm super(-3/2)
