An estuary is a transitional water area that links the land and sea through rivers and streams, transporting various components from the land to the sea, which plays an important role in determining primary productivity in the coastal environment, and this coastal ecosystem captures a huge amount of carbon into biomass, known as blue carbon, which mitigates climate change as a potential carbon reservoir. This study examined the variation of mean grain size and organic carbon content of the surface sediments for 6 years and analyzed their relationship in the western and southern estuarine areas (Han River Estuary, Geum River Estuary, Yeongsan River Estuary, Seomjin River Estuary, and Nakdong River Estuary) and the East Sea upwelling area. During the sampling period (2015 to 2020), seasonal variation of both properties was not observed, because their variations might be controlled by diverse oceanographic environments and hydrographic conditions within each survey area. However, despite the synoptic problem of all samples, the positive relationship was obtained between the averages of mean grain size and organic carbon content, which clearly distinguishes each survey area. The unique positive relationship in all estuarine areas implies that the same process by sediment clay particles is important in the organic carbon accumulation. However, additional important factor may be expected in the organic carbon accumulation in the East Sea upwelling area. Further necessary data (sedimentation rate, dry bulk density etc) should be required for the estimation of carbon stock to evaluate the major estuaries in Korea as potential carbon reservoirs in the coastal environment.

Because the flat dilatometer (DMT) is operated in appropriate strain level, it has been known as an adoptable in-situ tool to evaluate the compressibility of soils compare with other in-situ test tools, such as SPT and CPT. This study is concerned about prediction method of constrained modulus by DMT, and a series of DMT and consolidation tests are performed at Busan new-port, Yangsan and Noksan test sites. By comparing DMT results with lab tests, the suitability of constrained modulus correlation, which is suggested by Marchetti, is investigated in Busan clay and new correlation is suggested. In lab test result, the compression indices ($C_c$) of Busan clay are turned out to be 0.4~0.12, and the constrained moduli are found out 0.5MPa~3MPa and these are increase with depth. The predicted constrained moduli using Marchetti's correlation are turned out 0.5MPa~4MPa, and these are bigger than measured constrained moduli by lab tests. By analyzing lab test and DMT results, it is shown that the correlation coefficient ($R_M=M/E_D$) has a linear relationship with (1/$I_D$) in Busan.
As the permeability of soil adjacent to the vertical drain has a decisive effect on the rate of consolidation, the permeability of smear zone governs the rate of radial consolidation of PVD installed soft ground. In this study, a method was suggested to analyze the radial consolidation, based on consolidation characteristics of remolded clay, and was used to evaluate the consolidation of soft clay layer in Busan Newport. The suggested method provides more reliable consolidation behaviors than the conventional approach, which is based on the consolidation characteristics of undisturbed clay. The suggested method is also observed to be relatively insensitive to the uncertainty of $k_h/k_s$. The comparison between the analysis and field measurement revealed that the suggested method provided a reliable prediction on the rate of consolidation of PVD installed Busan new port clay and that an appropriate extent of smear zone was evaluated as about $3d_w$ by back analysis.

Myungji Housing Complex is located in the Nakdong River plain in which the Busan soft clays are developed. It has thick soft soil laver of about GL(-)50m including loose sandy layers, upper and lower clayey layers. The clayey layers have been being consolidated since the land reclamation was completed to build the place for Housing Complex(Apartment) in 1997. Therefore, as one of a series of advance preparations of this project, study was carried on the geotechnical characteristics under the foundation The first part of this paper represents a brief geological history. Then, geotechnical characteristics of clay was analyzed in the classical developments in soft clay. They were based on the geotechnical data obtained by site investigations performed from 1992 to 2005. Finally, we evaluated the average degree of consolidation at this point in time and the residual settlements of upper clayey layer using dissipation and oedometer tests for this project

Estuary of Nakdong river area is composed of unconsolidated sediments including clays that are deposited varying from 40 to 70m thick. The purpose of research is the knowledge of the correlation between engineering properties and mineralogy of clay sediments. The correlation analysis carry out multiple regression that have independent variables (Engineering properties) and dependent variables (mineralogy, geochemistry). Engineering properties of clay are correlated with the mineral compositions and geochemical characteristics. The result of the analysis is Wn=-0.6 Feldspar + 1.1 pH + 0.01 TDS + 27.5, Ip=0.36 Clay + 1.44 Vermiculite + 0.94 clay mineral-22.88, P$_{L}$=0.005 TDS - 0.31 Feldspar + 22.43, e$_{o}$=0.02 Vermiculite - 0.01 Quartz + TDS + 0.93, E$_{50}$=1.94 Vermiculite-0.96 Kaolinite -0.53 silt + 49.64, SR=-0.25 Kaolinite + 1.5 pH - 2.3 Conductivity, CC = 0.03 pH + TDS - 0.2, LL = 0.5 Clay + 1.3 Vermiculite + 5.5 Conductivity + 0.8 Caly mineral-20.4.4.4.4
Finite element model capable of solving coupled deformation-fluid diffusion equations for the fully saturated porous medium was developed using Galerkin's residual method. This model was used to study the mechanical and hydraulic behaviors of unconsolidated sediment near South Harbor, Pusan. The vertical displacement of top surface clay sediment, when subjected to the external load, is significantly affected by the excessive pore pres- sure buildup and its decay due to the pore fluid diffusion. The sand deposit overlain by the much less permeable clay layer serves as a flow channel. Consequently, the fluid diffusion due to pore pressure difference is significantly facilitated, which also affects the diffusion-dependent sediment deformation.

There is an increasing trend of construction works in mountainous areas by the urban development in Busan that is mainly composed of mountains. The study area, Hwangryeong Mt., is one of developing sites in the urban area, too. Landslides and cut-slope failures that occur large damages of human beings and the properties are influenced by soil characteristics as well as rock properties. This study analyzed geotechnical characteristics of soil dependent on geology at Hwangryeong Mt. where a large slope failure had been occurred in 1999. Geology of the study area is composed of the Cretaceous sedimentary rocks and volcanic rocks. Soil layer of the slopes can be grouped into sand mixed with clay and silt. The cohesion is plotted between $0.001\;and\;0.066kg/cm^2$. The friction angles are distributed in the ranges between $32^{\circ}\;and\;39^{\circ}$, meaning soil bearing a high friction angle. The permeability coefficients are plotted between $2.34\times10^{-4}cm/sec\;and\;2.58\times10^{-2}cm/sec$, indicating fine sand and loose silt with a medium grade of permeability. The sedimentary rocks area shows relatively higher permeability coefficients than those volcanic rocks area.
The Landslide in natural slope is occurred mostly by a heavy rain of the summer. This landslide is influenced in soil property of the surface than the rock mass. Soils in natural slope are created by weathering phenomena of the bedrock. These soils differed to the geological conditions such as sedimentary rock, metamorphic rock and volcanic rock. Therefore, estimation of landslide in natural slope is the most important analysis of the bedrock distributions and soil characteristics. This study analyzed the soil property to the natural slopes of Busan area where is distributed to volcanic rock, granite and sedimentary rock. Soil sample conducted various soil tests for estimate the soil physical property and soil engineering characteristics, and analysis of the correlation of geological conditions. In the experiment result, soils were mainly classified by a clayey sand. It is also established that $1.07{\sim}1.99kg/cm^3$ for wet density, $28.2{\sim}39.6^{\circ}$ for angle of shearing resistance, and $8.10{\times}10^{-5}{\sim}8.38{\times}10^{-2}cm/sec$ for coefficient of permeability. From the physical parameter, the soils are estimated to the permeable ground with good shear strength, and soil properties are showed a differential tendency for each geological condition.
Ground investigation and result analysis generally used to examine all sorts of structures' subsidence or stability can be classified into sandy soil and cohesive soil, and analysis on the liquid limit of soil is utilized to evaluate the physical properties of ground and types or technical behavior of soil. The most widely used method to analyze liquid limit is Casagrande with which liquid limit can be calculated relatively easily; however, it is fairly difficult to apply it to soil equipped with intermediate properties. Therefore, concerning the properties of soil having the intermediate properties of sedimentary ground, this researcher mixed the clay from Yangsan, Gwangyang, and Busan with sandy soil to make intermediate soil and then carried out the test of consistency limit and also evaluated applicability by using the suggested formula of consistency revision. The sample of intermediate soil was the mixture of clay and sandy soil, and to produce intermediate soil, the content (Fc) of fine soil was applied as 50%, 75%, or 100%. Regarding the physical properties of intermediate soil, to maintain the properties of clay in the natural state, bentonite was added at a fixed rate for controlling the properties of clay, and then, consistency was analyzed. By adopting the formula of consistency revision suggested in advanced research, this author analyzed consistency based on the experiment and consistency based on the suggested formula of revision. Also, about intermediate soil collected at the site, consistency based on the experiment and consistency based on the suggested formula of revision were analyzed comparatively, and about intermediate soil collected, this researcher analyzed particle size and calculated the content (Fc) of fine soil to analyze intermediate soil in diverse conditions. Moreover, about intermediate soil collected at the site, the suggested formula of consistency revision was applied to calculate the compression index, and the compression index based on the experiment and the compression index based on the suggested formula were analyzed comparatively to evaluate the applicability of the suggested formula.
