  • The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effect of the parent-adolescent career congruence process in the association between the parent-adolescent relationship and career identity of South Korean college students. In particular, we investigated which kind of career congruence process mediates the positive effect of the interdependent parent-adolescent relationship (in support of emotional bond and filial piety) and the independent parent-adolescent relationship (in support of independence and autonomy) on career identity. Data of 509 college students were analyzed for this study, and parallel multiple mediation analysis was performed. As a result, the complementary and attunement congruence process fully mediated the relationship between parent-adolescent affective bonding and career identity. Authoritative filial piety had a negative direct effect on career identity, but a positive indirect effect by mediating the complementary and attunement congruence process. The mediation analysis showed that both complementary and attunement congruence process fully mediated the association between independent parent-adolescent relationship and career identity. However, family intrusion had only a negative direct effect on career identity. On the other hand, the supplementary congruence process did not have significant mediating effects between all types of parent-adolescent relationships and career identity. Also, the supplementary congruence process had a negative direct effect on career identity. Based on these results, we discussed culturally universal and culturally specific characteristics of the relationship between parent-adolescent relationships and career identity, along with the limitations and recommendations for future research.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the actor and partner effects of the parental sex-role attitude on the parent-child relationship by using the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM). Specifically, this study focused on the examination of the actor and partner effects of the parental sex-role attitude in married couples with immigrant women who have children under 5 years old. For the analyses, a total of 5,531 couples who participated in the National Survey on Multi-cultural Families were included and the major findings are as follows. First, the couple's sex-role attitude had a statistically significant actor effect on the parent-child relationship. Parents who were more conscious of gender equality displayed a better parent-child relationship and this effect was greater in the case of the father's attitude than the mother's. Second, the father's sex-role attitude had a statistically significant partner effect on the mother-child relationship, whereas the mother's attitude did not. Third, the couple's actor effects were greater than their partner effects and this means that the personal sex-role attitude has a greater impact on the parent-child relationship than the partners' attitude. The implication and limitations derived from these empirical-scientific database results and related studies in educational program of gender equality attitude for multi-cultural families.

  • This study is intended to look into the effects of children's forest experience activities on parent-child relationship and child attitude change. To achieve this, a survey was empirically carried out to 185 children. The results were as follows. First, the normality of parent-child relationship before and after forest experience activities showed that the parent-child relationship increased from 3.229 points before participation in forest experience activities to 3.841 points after participation in forest experience activities on average. And the child attitude increased from 3.226 points before participation in forest experience activities to 3.765 points after participation in forest experience activities, which there was a change of mean value before and after forest experience activities in both concepts. Second, the difference in parent-child relationship and child attitude change before and after forest experience activities showed that both parent-child relationship(Z=-10.98, p<.001) and child attitude(Z=-11.05, p<.001) did have significant differences before and after forest experience activities in the significant level of .05. As for the above-mentioned findings, children's forest experience activities improves the parent-child relationship and changes their behaviors outside the kindergarten. Consequently, nature-friendly forest experience education can provide emotional stability for children and help them build a positive rapport between teacher, parent and peer.

  • The present study investigated the relationship between parental problem drinking and risk for malajustment in adolescents. A group of adolescent children of problem drinkers(126 boys, 210 girls) and a group of children of non-problem drinkers(190 boys, 222 girls) were compared on demographic variables, perceived relationships with parents(parental care and parental over-protection), depression, anxiety, alcohol expectancies, alcohol involvement and self-reported delinquency. Adolescent children of problem drinkers reported lower level of perceived parental care and higher level of perceived parental overprotection compared to the children of nonproblem drinkers. They also reported higher depression, anxiety and alcohol expectancies, as well as more alcohol involvement and delinquent behaviors. Multiple regression analyses were performed seperately for male and female adolescents with depression, anxiety, alcohol expectancies, alcohol involvement and self-reported delinquency as outcome variables. Adolescents' emotional distress(depression and anxiety) was associated with perceived relationships with parents rather than parental problem drinking, but adolescents' alcohol problems and delinquency were associated with parental problem drinking and adolescents' emotional distress rather than their perceived relationships with parents.

  • 'Hyao' has been studied by several Korean psychiatrists, mostly in relation to Oedipus complex and psychopathological implications. The present authors propose that 'Hyao' should be understood as being broader and more basic in its meaning and functions which are listed as the follows. 1) Hyao as an attachment, mutual dependence and basic trust between the generations. 2) Hyao as a control mechanism of aggression between the generations. 3) Hyao as a control and resolving mechanism of oedipus complex. 4) Hyao as an organizer of personality development and self-actualization. These functions of Hyao were integrated in a developmental perpective and, the role and responsibilities of parents in promoting and offering their model behavior for positive identification were discussed. 'Hyao' is suggested as being primarily mutual attachment and reverence(respect) between the generations which promote healthy resolutions of issues and conflicts of each developmental stage to be followed.
