  • In the construction of row-rise steel buildings, double angle connection can be considered as one of most effective connection types. Its connection flexibility depends mainly on several parameters such as angle thickness, bolt gage distance, and number of bolts. To establish the effect of the variation of the number of bolts on the moment-rotation relationship, three experimental tests have been conducted in this research. Based on the results of each experimental test, the rotational stiffness of each angle specimen can be calculated by performing regression analysis. Considering the results of regression analysis, we concluded that the more the number of bolts used in double angle connection, the higher the rotational stiffness as one can expected.

  • The failure of a bolted joint owing to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) has been considered one of the most important structural integrity issues in a nuclear power plant. In this study, the failure possibility of bolting, which is used to support the steam generator of a pressurized water reactor, owing to SCC and brittle fracture was evaluated in accordance with guidelines proposed by the Electric Power Research Institute, which are called the Reference Flaw Factor method. For this evaluation, first, detailed finite element stress analyses were conducted to obtain the actual nominal stresses of bolting in which either service loads or bolt preloads were considered. Based on these nominal stresses, the structural integrity of bolting was addressed from the viewpoints of SCC and toughness. In addition, the accuracy of the EPRI Reference Flaw Factor for assessing bolting failure was investigated using finite element fracture mechanics analyses.

  • Although high strength bolts with tensile strength of 1,000 MPa are mainly used in steel structure construction sites throughout the world, new high strength bolts are required owing to the installation of continuous long-span bridges resulting from the development and distribution of high strength steel and ultra-thick steel plates. Currently, high strength bolts with tensile strength of 1,300 MPa are being used. However, as they tend to place a large load on a small section of space, a high strength bolt of high structural performance and screw thread shape with less stress concentration is thought to be more effective. This study conducted analyses in order to develop an improved screw thread shape relative to the KS screw thread shape. A new screw thread shape with less stress concentration and effective load distribution at the time of fastening bolts and nuts was provided upon analysis of the characteristics of screw thread shape. Additionally, in an experimental study, the structural performance of high strength bolts with tensile strength of 1,300 MPa was investigated. The results revealed that the new screw thread shape was more effective than the existing screw thread shape in terms of structural performance and mitigating the stress concentration.

  • Launching tube is a kind of case to protect the guided weapons from external environments and conducted as a guide when they are fired. The guided weapons have been firmly kept at the launching tube and transferred, and would be separated at the required time when they are fired To meet the aim, it has been used explosive bolts which are reliable and efficient mechanical fastening devices having the special feature of a built-in release. The disadvantage of explosive bolt lies in that it is based on the high explosive effect of a pyrotechnic charge. When the explosive bolt is ignited, there are some bad effects; a flame, fragments and pyro-shock. Because of these bad effects there are many restriction to use bolt as joining devices to precision guided weapons. To solve these problems, the aim of the present work is to invent the ball-type separation bolt which is a pyrotechnically releasable mechanical linking device for two mechanical elements that does not suffer from such drawbacks. A standard pressure cartridge can moreover be easily integrated inside the device according to the present work and this with no modification to its structure. The present work was represented quantitatively the margin of separation safety and analysed separation mechanism in ball type separating bolt to perform the dynamic separation test.

  • This paper presents the bearing strength for laminates in advanced composite materials in bolted joints. Bolted single lap joint tests were experimentally investigated with respect to stabilized and unstabilized lap joints. Stabilized bolted single lap joints refer to joints with out-of-plane rotational constraints. Unstabilized bolted single lap joints refer to joints with absence of out-of-plane deflection constraints. The bearing strength values of laminates in the bolted joint showed that the percentages of ply angle for 0, 45, -45, and 90 degrees were not affected. The bearing strength value in the unstabilized bolted joint was smaller than the bearing strength value in the stabilized bolted joint because of the influence of the out-of-plane behavior. The composite material studied in this paper is a carbon/epoxy unidirectional (UD) tape prepreg cured at $177^{\circ}C(350^{\circ}F)$. In the laminate reference system, the standard angles of 0, 45, -45, and 90 degrees were used for ply orientation within the laminate. A total of 112 bolted single lap joint tests were conducted on specimens from eight distinct laminates. The ASTM-D-5961M standards were adhered to for the stabilized and unstabilized bolted single lap joint tests.

  • The reinforcement effect of micro-bolt for a bonded scarf joint was investigated. Three scarf ratios of 1/10, 1/20, and 1/30 were considered to examine the effect of scarf patch configuration on joint strength. To maintain the same density of micro-bolt, 16, 32, and 48 bolts were installed in the scarf joint specimens with scarf ratios of 1/10, 1/20, and 1/30, respectively. Tests were also carried out on the joints that are bonded with only adhesive and that are fastened with only micro-bolts to obtain reference values. The average failure loads of the adhesive joints with scarf ratios of 1/10, 1/20, and 1/30 were 29.7, 39.6, and 44.8 kN, respectively. In case of micro-bolt reinforcement, the failure loads at the same scarf ratios were 28.4, 37.2, and 40.1 kN, respectively, which corresponds to 96, 94, and 90% of the pure adhesive joint failure loads. In the case of using only micro-bolts, the failure loads were only 13-25% of the average failure loads of pure adhesive joints. Fatigue test was also conducted for the joints with scarf ratio of 1/10. The results show that the fatigue strength of hybrid joints using both adhesive and microbolts together slightly increased compared to the fatigue strength of adhesive joint, but the rate of increase was small to 2-3%. Through this study, it was confirmed that the reinforcement effect of micro-bolt is negligible in the scarf joints where shear stress is dominating the failure, unlike in the structure where peel stress is dominant.

  • Many studies have been conducted on the high tension bolt friction connection in the view of the field practice. Those effort, however, unfortunately have not been appropriately applied in the design specifications. Recently, particularly for steel bridges, rationalization of design takes greater attention from designers and hence, demand on rationalization of high tension connection becomes more significant. The purpose of this study is to suggest direction for the rationalization of high tension bolt connection and to also provide fundamental information for the improvement of the design specifications. In order to accomplish the purposes, the design specifications in Korea was analyzed and compared with other specification from abroad, and was studied one of the most important factors including slip coefficient, and the specifications on the size of bolt holes. The effect of over-sized bolt hole and the reduction of axial force on bolt was evaluated through the experimental studies on the slippage of the high tension bolt connections. Other research topics included herein includes the difference of slip coefficients, the effect of over-sized bolt holes and the gap distance of members, and the application of filler plate and corrosion protected bolts. From the research results, it is known that the specifications in Korea apply a constant slip coefficient with respect to the contacted surface conditions while various coefficients are available depending on the contacted surface conditions. Therefore, it is recommended that the specifications in Korea also develop and detail the slip coefficient which can appropriately take account of the variation of the contacted surface conditions. It is also suggested that the limitation abroad on the over-sized bolt hole may be applied for enhancing the effectiveness of construction.
