  • The random utility theory and the multinomial logit model (including a more recent variant--the mixed multinomial logit) derived from it have constituted a back bone for theoretical and empirical analyses of various travel demand features including mode choice. In their empirical applications, however, it is customary to specify random utilities which are linear in modal attributes such as time and cost, and in socio-economic variables. The linearity helps easy derivation of important information such as value of travel time savings by calculating marginal rate of substitution between time and cost. In this paper the author focuses on the very linearity of the random utilities. Taking into account the fact that the mode chooser is also labour supplier, commodity consumer as well as leisure-seeker, the author sets up a maximization model of the traveller, which encompasses various economic activities of the traveller. The author derive from the model the indifference curve defined on the space of modal attributes, time and cost and investigate under what conditions the random utility of the traveller becomes linear. It turns out that there exist the conditions under which the random utility is really linear in modal attributes, but the property does not hold when the traveller has a corner solution on the space of modal attributes, or when the primary utility function of the traveller is directly affected by labour provided and/or the travel time itself. As a corollary of the analysis, a random utility is suggested, approximated up to the second order of the variables involved for empirical studies of the field.

  • Traditional financial approaches have been failed to satisfy the firms in evaluating the payoffs from information technology(IT) investment. This research developed a processed-oriented model to evaluate the impacts of IT on the primary business activities within the value chain. The model proposed in this research incorporates corporate goals for IT and strategic alignment as key measurements of IT impacts. We found that corporate goals for IT can be classified into one of four categories: unfocused, operations focus, market focus, and dual focus(operations and market focus), using survey data collected from 137 corporate executives in Korea. The empirical analysis confirms that corporate goals for IT are useful indicators of impacts from IT in that executives in firms with more focused goals for IT perceive higher payoffs from IT in the value chain. We also found that strategic alignment contributes to higher perceived levels of IT payoffs.

  • Purpose: For the health of pet dogs and to reduce harm to humans, we investigated the preference of pet dogs on cushions made from functional ocher textile, which is known to be beneficial to human health. Methods: The preference of 12 small dogs between cushions made using functional ocher textile and normal yellow colored fabrics was observed. Results: The observation study showed 83.3% preference on cushions made from functional ocher textile where dogs rested or slept mostly. The biting behavior was improved by 83.3%. After using the functional cushions, four dogs with eye disease, one with eczema, and two with allergy showed improvements while others showed no improvement. After the experience, 50% of dogs became quieter. 87.5% of dogs showed more mild temperament. Conclusions: The functional ocher cushions showed preferences by dogs as well as brought positive improvements with the temperament and health conditions. This study proves to be a valuable fundamental research in this field of functional ocher cushions.

  • This research analyzed which average comparisons and differences between groups' view motive and selection for information sources, product properties with theater animation spectator. Based on view frequency, each of groups' organization were classified to heavy, occasional, and thinly viewers. As average comparison analysis result, firstly, view motive appeared in order to "want to see animation", "to spend time and leisure activity", "to enjoy fun activity", and "because of others canvassing or recommendation", etc. Secondly, view selection for information source appeared in order to "rumor circumstance or reputation", "theater or TV previews", "internet evaluation and grade", etc. At last, view selection for practical property appeared in order to "story", "character", "special effects", "background music", "background art", "director/directing", "manufacturer/nation", and "dubbing of artist". As difference between group result, view motive and selection for product properties appeared significant differences between each of group. To the contrary, view selection for information sources did not appeared significant differences between each of group.

  • This study was conducted to compare the self-leadership strategies and self-efficacy among the four types of career development in the Korean engineering college students. When the two variables including career decision level and career preparation behavior were considered, four different types of career development were obtained: immature, behavioral, pseudo, and ideal type. The results showed that the ideal type obtained the significantly higher scores on the self-leadership and self-efficacy scales than the other three types. The results of stepwise analysis suggested that each subtype had unique characteristics in relation to self-leadership strategies. Therefore, it would be useful to provide the engineering students with the specialized self-leadership training program based on the types of career development.

  • Despite the increasing importance of information technology in firms, the extent to which IT governance are established varies widely across the firms. To perform desirably the role of IS needed in most companies, high level of IT governance and the effective management should precede. However, the impacts of such activities and management on the IT governance have not been empirically examined in depth until now. Thus, building on the theory of governance and the institutionalization, the research model and the hypotheses of the study were formed and then empirically tested. The study used a survey of senior IT managers from 108 firms in order to examine hypothesized relationship among the following constructs: strategic alignment, IT governance committee, IT planning, EA, PMO, SLM, IT compliance, incident management, IS effectiveness, visibility, and corporate performance. A structural equation model is developed by using LISREL to assess the relative effects and interrelationship among these constructs. The results show that strategic alignment has positive influence on IT governance committee and IT planning. IT governance committee, IT planning, SLM, incident management from IT governance activities have positive effects on IS effectiveness, whereas IT compliance has a negative effect on IS effectiveness. Visibility is positively influenced by IT planning, EA, SLM. IT compliance, and both IS effectiveness and visibility have positive effects on corporate performance.
