  • The objective of this research is to develop the impact monitoring techniques providing impact identification and damage diagnostics of smart composite laminates susceptible to impacts. This can be implemented simultaneously by using the acoustic waves by the impact loads and the acoustic emission waves from damage. In the previous research, we have discussed the impact location detection process in which impact generated acoustic waves are detected by PZT using the improved neural network paradigm. This paper describes the implementation of time-frequency analysis such as the Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT) and the Wavelet Transform (WT) on the determination of the occurrence and the estimation of damage.

  • The purpose of this development is weight reduction of hollow type steel torque bar by changing the material from steel to composite. Structure analysis is executed by the finite element model generated by the structural load condition and geometric structure requirement. According to this analysis result, optimized ply sequence and wall thickness are defined. To simulate analysis result, torsion test for composite torque bar was performed. Throughout the test result, the stiffness and strength requirement of composite torque bar was verified.

  • The vehicle structure of Automated People Mover(APM) made of aluminum honeycomb sandwich with WR580INF4000 glass-fabric epoxy laminate facesheets was evaluated by structural test and finite element analysis. The test of the vehicle structure was conducted according to JIS E 7105. The structural integrity of vehicle structure was evaluated by stress, deflection and natural frequency obtained from dial-gauge and acceleration sensor. And the proposed finite element models were compared with the results of structural test. The results of finite element analysis showed good agreement with those of structural test. Also, in order to improve the stiffness of vehicle structure, the modified underframe model with reinforced side sill was proposed in design stage. The composite vehicle structures with modified underframe model had the improved structural stiffness about 44%.

  • Low-velocity impact can cause various damages which are mostly hidden inside the laminates or occur in the opposite side. Thus, these damages cannot be easily detected by visual inspection or conventional NDT systems. And if they occurred between the scheduled NDT periods, the possibilities of extensive damages or structural failure can be higher. Due to these reasons, the built-in NDT systems such as real-time impact monitoring system are required in the near future. In this paper, we studied the impact monitoring system consist of impact location detection and damage assessment techniques for composite flat and stiffened panel. In order to acquire the impact-induced acoustic signals, four multiplexed FBG sensors and high-speed FBG interrogator were used. And for development of the impact and damage occurrence detections, the neural networks and wavelet transforms were adopted. Finally, these algorithms were embodied using MATLAB and LabVIEW software for the user-friendly interface.

  • Thermally induced vibration response of composite thin-walled beams is investigated in this paper. The flexible spacecraft appendages modeled as thin-walled beam incorporates a number of nonclassical effects of transverse shear, primary and secondary warping, rotary inertia and anisotropy of constitute materials. Thermally induced vibration responds characteristics of a composite thin walled beam exhibiting the circumferantially uniform system(CUS) configuration are exploited in connection with the structural flapwise bending lagwise bending coupling resulting from directioal properties of fiber reinforced composite materials and ply stacking sequence. A coupled thermal structure gradient is investigated.

  • With the wide application of fiber-reinforced composite material in aero-structures and mechanical parts, the design of composite joint have become a very important research area because they are often the weakest areas in composite structures. In this paper, the failure area index method to predict the strength of the mechanically fastened composite joint which has the same stacking sequence was suggested and evaluated. By the suggested failure area index method, the strength of the mechanically fastened composite joint could be predicted within 6.03%.

  • The demand for weight saving and high performance of aircraft require the more uses of composite materials. However the complicate behaviors and various failure characteristics restrict usage of composite materials. Low-velocity impact damage is a major concern in the design of structures made of composite materials, because impact damage is hidden and cannot be detected by visual inspection. Especially, the reduction on compressive strength after impact is influenced by the ply delaminations introduced as damage by impact event. In this research, the numerical analysis was performed to investigate impact damage and compressive strength after impact. It was found that impact force history and compressive strength after impact calculated by the numerical analysis were compared and shown a good agreement with experimental results.

  • In this study, structural design and analysis of the automobile bonnet is performed. The flax/vinly ester composite material is applied for structural design. The Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding-Light (VARTML) manufacturing method is adopted for manufacturing the flax fiber composite bonnet. The VARTML is a manufacturing process that the resin is injected into the fly layered-up fibers enclosed by a rigid mold tool under vacuum. A series of flax/vinyl ester composite panels are manufactured, and several kinds of specimens cut out from the panels are tested to obtain mechanical performance data. Based on this, structural design of the automobile bonnet is performed.

  • Structural model of laminated composite plate based on the first order shear deformation theory and subjected to a combination of piezoelectric, electromagnetic and thermal fields is established. Coupled equations of motion are derived via Hamilton's principle on the basis of electromagnetic and piezoelectric equations which are involved in constitutive equations. Proportional control and velocity feedback control logics are applied via boundary control moments and forces. Variations of dynamic chasracteristics of composite plate with collocated piezoelectric sensor and actuators, electromagnetic field and temperature gradient are investigated and it reveals that dynamic characteristics of structure can be effectively controlled by utilizing the piezoelectric effect and ply angles of fiber reinforced composites.
