  • Sand pile is widely used as a ground improvement method. Although the primary purpose of constructing sand pile is accelerating consolidation, composite ground effect also can be gained by constructing sand pile. This study was accomplished to understand composite ground effect on the ground improved by sand piles which were applied as vertical drainage material when area replacement ratio was small relatively. For determining bearing capacities of origin ground and sand piles and analysing interaction between embankment and origin ground, bearing tests and earth pressure monitoring are performed. From the results, it turned out that the contribution of sand pile as a load bearing mechanism is not substantial. However, the bearing capacity of sand pile was increased to sixty percentages when compared with origin ground. The increasement of bearing capacity could be caused the change of consolidation characteristics during the process of consolidation by overburden load. Therefore, the composite ground effects depending on stiffness increasement of sand pile would be estimated as a factor decreasing consolidation settlement.

  • In this research, the characteristics of settlement and consolidation behavior of the composite ground formation reinforced by Recycled-Aggregate Porous Concrete Pile (RAPP) were evaluated by conducting a series of laboratory chamber tests. The effect of settlement reduction was verified by comparing the settlement of the composite ground formation with that of the unreinforced ground. In addition, it was studied how much the RAPP can accelerate consolidation in assessment of the degree of consolidation in the composite ground formation. The amount of settlement reduction was decreased with an increase on surcharge pressure, but it was greater than that of the SCP method. The RAPP and the SCP showed a similar rate of consolidation.

  • In this paper, a series of laboratory chamber tests were carried out to evaluate the applicability of a porous concrete pile fabricated with recycled aggregates (RAPP) for the soft ground improvement. While performing the laboratory chamber tests for the RAPP, the surface settlement, excess pore pressure and vertical stress distribution with time were compared with those of SCP provided by You (2003) under the same experimental condition. In addition, the experimental results were compared with the numerical simulation using ABAQUS in this study. The results show that the settlement reduction is significantly enhanced due to the stress-sharing mechanism between the RAPP and soil formation by stress concentration on the RAPP. Furthermore, the comparison of consolidation rate shows that the RAPP can accelerate consolidation as well, which behaves as a vertical drain.

  • An energy method has been used for an elastic formulation of bending vibration and buckling analysis of laminated composite plates on two-parameter elastic foundations. A quasi-elastic method is used for the solution of viscoelastic analysis of the laminated composite plates. The third-order shear deformation theory is applied by using the double-fourier series. To validate the derived equations the obtained displacements for simply supported orthotropic plates on elastic foundations are compared with those of LUSAS program Numerical results of the viscoelastic bending vibration and buckling analysis are presented to show the effects of layup sequence number of layers material anisotropy and shear modulus of foundations.

  • Mechanical behavior of composition pound improved by sand compaction pile (SCP) with low replacement area ratio could be more significantly affected by mechanical interaction between sand piles and clays than that of clay ground improved by SD or SCP with high replacement area ratio. It is essential to elucidate the mechanical interaction in the improved clay ground, in order to accurately estimate behavior in reducing settlement of the improved ground and increasing strength of clays. In this paper, through a series of model tests of composition ground improved by SCP with low replacement area ratio, each mechanical behaviors of sand piles and clays in the composition ground during consolidation was elucidated, together with stress sharing behavior between sand piles and clays.

  • The aim of this study is to analyze the mechanical characteristics and settlement feature of the composite ground with structural form changes. The laboratory model test is a soil tanker to be contained with clay and grid form improved soil, which is conducted in total 9 case with the uniaxial compressive strength of improved soil and replacement ratio of improved soil. The numerical analysis for variation of stress distribution ratio with depth was performed in the same conditions which are the laboratory model test. As a result, stress distribution ratios in mid and high replacement ratio are increasing and settlement is decreasing, except low replacement ratio. This study is presented for form effect ratio and settlement reduction factor with change of structure form, which is able to be helpful in further research and reference for change of structural forms at composite ground.

  • In this paper, a series of model tests were performed in laboratory to evaluate promoting consolidation of compaction pile methods for soft ground improvement. For the model tests, composite soil samples that have 10% replacement area ratio were prepared by using sand, gravel, and sandy gravel for the materials of compaction piles. After loading to each composite soil sample, the excess pore pressure dissipation and settlement were investigated. In addition, the behavior of clay mixed with each compaction pile was also monitored at the end of consolidation to evaluate clogging phenomenon. As a test result, the effects for decreasing settlement and promoting consolidation by GCP were prominent, and the mixed clay was not monitored in all of the three compaction piles.

  • Sand pile method, such as sand drain method and sand compaction pile method, has been popularly used as an improved method for soft clay grounds. The effect of accelerating consolidation of soft clay grounds has been evaluated with Barren's solution. The consolidation behavior of soft clay ground with sand piles strongly depends on both the nonlinear mechanical interaction between sand piles and surrounding clays and the degradation permeability of clays. In this paper a method of determining consolidation parameters of soft clay ground with sand drains by using Barren's solution was proposed through a series of numerical simulations. Through the method, the change in both volume compressibility and permeability during consolidation was reasonably evaluated.
