  • This paper is to investigate collapse mechanisms of CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics)composite tubes and to evaluate collapse characteristics on the change of interlaiminar number and ply orientation angle of outer under static and impact axial compression loads. When a CFRP composite tube is crushed, static/impact energy is consumed by friction between the loading plate and the splayed fronds of the tube, by fracture of the fibers, matrix and their interface. These are associated with the energy absorption capability. In general, CFRP tube with 6 interlaminar number(C-type), absorbed more energy than other tubes(A, B, D-types). The maximum collapse load seemed to increase as the interlaminar number of such tubes increases. The collapse mode depended upon orientation angle of outer of CFRP tubes and loading status(static/impact). Typical collapse modes of CFRP tubes are wedge collapse mode, splaying collapse mode and fragmentation collapse mode. The wedge collapse mode was shown in case of CFRP tubes with 0° orientation angle of outer under static and impact loadings. The splaying collapse mode was shown in only case of CFRP tubes with 90°orientation angle of outer under static loadings, however in Impact tests those were collapsed in fragmentation mode .

  • Polystyrene/single-walled carbon nanotube (PS/SWCNT) nanocomposites were prepared by latex technology and the effect of surfactant (SDS) on nanotube dispersion, rheological and electrical properties was investigated. The nanocomposites were prepared through freeze-drying after mixing PS particles and aqueous SWCNT/SDS suspension. As the SDS content increased, the storage modulus and complex viscosity of the nanocomposites were increased due to enhanced dispersion of nanotubes, but if the content excessively increased, the modulus and viscosity began to decrease due to low molecular weight of SDS. The electrical conductivity sharply increased with the addition of SDS, and then did not show significant changes. This result is speculated to be the competition between the increased dispersion of nanotubes and the deterioration of electrical conductivity by SDS adsorption. An optimal ratio of SDS to SWCNT for improving electrical conductivity and end-use properties was 2. With this ratio, the electrical percolation threshold of SWCNT was less than 1 wt%.

  • We designed bearingless rotor hub system which replace mechanical hinge/bearing with composite beam component and conducted fatigue analysis for flexbeam and torque tube. Extension/bending/torsional stiffness was calculated from 2D section analysis using VABS and 2D section structure analysis was applied for strain calculation. S-N curve of each composite material was generated using Wohler equation and fatigue analysis was conducted on weakness section which was decided from static structure analysis. CAMRAD II was used for load analysis and load analysis result was applied HELIX/FELIX standard load spectrum to generate bearingless rotor system load spectrum which was used fatigue safe life analysis.

  • In this paper, in order to develop a realistic trigger model for a unidirectional Kevlar/Epoxy tube, the numerical model has been established and then verified by comparison with the experimental result. To achieve this goal, four different trigger models were candidated and evaluated using the commercial explicit FE code LS-DYNA. In the finite element analysis, the 2D shell element and Chang-Chang failure criterion was used. Mechanical material properties for the model were obtained by material testing in advance. The numerical results were compared with quasi-static test results under axial compressive loading at 10mm/min. The load-crushed displacement curves were very close to the experiments and SEA (specific energy absorption) showed a good agreement with experimental one within less than 5%.

  • In order to maximize the performance of polymer nano-composites, it is essential to understand an effect of a dispersion state on material properties as well as to achieve highly dispersed composites. In this work, a simple quantitative approach to evaluate the degree of dispersion was suggested for carbon nanotube (CNT) embedded polymer nano-composites. Through UV-visible spectroscopy analysis, the transmittance of nano-composites was measured at various dispersion states and it was found that the transmittance reduced as the dispersion state of CNT improved. Based on the results, an effective concentration factor for quantitative evaluation of dispersion state was introduced into the Beer-Lambert transmittance law. The proposed method and parameter to evaluate the degree of dispersion were verified by analyzing the transmittances at different dispersion states of CNT, concentrations of CNT and sample thicknesses.

  • This paper presents an experimental study on the enhancement of electromagnetic shielding (EMI) properties of glass fiber, carbon fiber, and glass-carbon fiber composites by adding layers of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). In the case of glass-fiber composites, spraying 0.1~0.2 g of MWCNT over a fiber area of $200mm{\times}200mm$ (1.8~3.6 ${\mu}m$ in thickness) resulted in significant improvement in EMI shielding effectiveness (SE). Also, when applying multiple MWCNT layers, it was more effective to place the layers concentrated near the center of the composite rather than spreading them out. On the contrary, inherently conductive carbon fiber and glass-carbon fiber composites did not show appreciable improvement with the addition of MWCNT layers. In order to maximize the effectiveness of carbon nanomaterials as EMI shielding fillers, it is imperative to understand the effect of these materials on various EMI shielding mechanisms and their interactions.

  • This study intends to provide the analytical and experimental damping characterization of carbon nanotube/epoxy composites. A constitutive model based on continuum mechanics is employed to describe epoxy and the perfectly bonded and partially bonded nanotubes. An interfacial stick-slip between the nanotubes and epoxy is considered to characterize the damping of the composites. For experimental estimation, beam-type specimens are prepared with a variation of nanotube concentration from 0.5% to 2% in weight. An ultrasonic agitation method is employed for enhancing the nanotube dispersion within epoxy. Damping of the composites is characterized in terms of the strain and the nanotube concentration. Results show that the nanotube concentration significantly affects the damping characteristics of the nanocomposites. A good correlation is found between the analytical prediction based on the stick-slip and the experimental measurements.

  • Polypropylene films reinforced with multi-walled carbon nanotubes and exfoliated graphite nanoplatelets were fabricated by extrusion, and the effects of filler type and take-up speed on the mechanical properties and microstructure of composite films were investigated. Differential scanning calorimetry revealed that the addition of carbon nanomaterials resulted in increased degree of crystallinity. However, increasing the take-up speed reduced the degree of crystallinity, which indicates that tension-induced orientations of polymer chains and carbon nanomaterials and the loss of degree of crystallinity due to rapid cooling at high take-up speeds act as competing mechanisms. These observations were in good agreement with tensile properties, which are governed by the degree of crystallinity, where the C-grade exfoliated graphite nanoplatelet with a surface area of $750m^2/g$ showed the greatest reinforcing effect among all types of carbon nanomaterials used. Scanning electron microscopy was employed to observe the carbon nanomaterial dispersion and orientation, respectively.

  • Nanocarbons such as carbon nanotubes (CNT) and graphene are considered to be ideal fillers for polymer composites, because of their outstanding mechanical properties and high length-to-diameter ratio. There has been much effort to realize the implementation of their full potential, but a large number of unsolved problems still must be challenged, for example, effective processing for fabrication. This review deals with the progress that has already been made in the area of nanocarbon polymer composites using CNT and graphene. Mechanical reinforcement of various nanocarbon polymer composites is analyzed and compared, and future perspectives in research and development that need to be done are discussed.
